Black Friday 2008 will be
remembered as a slight, but pleasant bump in a rocky road for retail this holiday. Fitting, then, that Wii and its equally scarce sidekick,
Wii Fit, were the
top search items on the day. As it turns out, folks wanted to shop (172 million to be exact!), they just couldn't always buy what they were searching for. With Wii in short supply at retail, eBay merchants continued to turn profits on resales of the console with an average selling price of $349. Overall, online shopping
totals grew modestly relative to last year.
Meanwhile, a stack of Xbox 360s caused a
brawl at Walmart, and, in a macabre turn of events, an employee was
trampled to death by a frenzied mob at the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, New York. In California, two men killed each other in a
gunfight that erupted at the Palm Desert Toys R Us. All convincing examples of why we prefer to
pay it safe from our keyboards:

Well, that's wasn't too hard of a choice, was it? Honestly, if we didn't have
Prince of Persia to elevate to that honored slot, we don't know what we'd do. The next closest is probably
Destroy All Humans: Path of the Furon or maybe the PC version of
Grand Theft Auto IV, which all good citizens have already partaken in (spoiler alert: Niko is a criminal).
If you think that's rough though, just wait until next week, when we're betting we'll be choosing between the "Imagine Babiez edition" and the "Imagine Babysitterz edition." :shudder:

Our savings accounts now liquidated, we currently find ourselves in a residential crisis. Had we only possessed the foresight to place importance on rent payments rather than kitchen utensils and
smooth, smooth music, we may have avoided this predicament. That's where you guys come in -- we either need to pawn off our regrettably obtained goods to pay off our living expenses, or be put in contact with a landlord who will accept the aforementioned odds and ends as apartmental compensation. Surely, someone out there knows of a kind superintendent with unsecure dentures and a proclivity for
scooting.
The spending habits of Japan's console-purchasing populous mirrored our own over the past week, with most systems seeing major sales increases. Six of the top ten best-selling titles belonged to Nintendo's handheld -- combined with the limited availability of the DSi, this caused a major bounce-back for the DS Lite. We've sent a congratulatory "
Hang in There, Baby" poster in response, though we're not sure the DS Lite will receive it, as it is an inanimate object.

In case your wallet isn't hurting enough from this weekend (or you simply decided to take the frugal route with Black Friday shopping), Amazon has unveiled their Cyber Monday deals, which starts tomorrow at 3:00AM ET. While no way as exhaustive as
its weekend specials (which, like the new deals, last until Tuesday, December 2 at 2:59AM ET), there are a few steep discounts worth noting.

Spore is being offered for only $20.

News related to our favorite top-hat-sporting riddle solver,
Professor Layton, has been quite scarce as of late (we'd like that release date for
Pandora's Box, and soon) -- that's why our attention was immediately drawn to
a recent announcement for the good Professor's box office debut. Yes, Level 5 recently began promoting
Professor Layton: The First Movie, an animated feature-length film which is currently set for a tentative February 2010 release in Japan.
Details on the film's plot are non-existent, but our hopes are high, as the animation featured in the brainteasing DS series is already gorgeous. Unfortunately, we're not sure we could enjoy the film should it make its way to the states -- we'd likely spend most of the movie scouring the silver screen for glimpses of
precious hint coins.

We have a tendency to miss metareviewing portable games, especially when they're caught up in the mad flood of holiday releases. But
Ninjatown has been getting such good scores we figured it deserved its moment in the sun, especially since you'll be able to
pick it up for $15 on Friday. ... And yes, OK, it's kind of a slow news day. So sue us.
- GameShark (91/100): "Ninjatown has 'sleeper hit' written all over it. It certainly looks innocent enough on the outside - it's cute and goofy, and oozes sugary sweetness, as it's actually based on a stuffed toy line (the Shawnimals, created by ex game journo Shawn Smith). But underneath that fluffy exterior is a seriously addictive tower defense game that is as hardcore as it is adorable."
- Game Informer (90/100): "Don't let the cutie-pie exterior fool you - Ninjatown is a gamer's game through and through. The units in this tower-defense title are versatile and useful, enemies are diverse and deadly, and there are enough power-ups and options to keep things fresh. Best of all, levels don't seem to have a preset way to beat them, unlike many tower-defense games on the market."
- 1UP (B+): "Ninjatown's layered in a coating of sickly sweetness that no amount of scrubbing will ever get out of your DS slot, but this obviously wasn't a game rushed out just to peddle Shawnimals merchandise. If you can get past the saccharine coating of the Ninjatown world, you'll find a surprisingly good tower defense?style filling hidden inside the hard candy shell."

Xbox 360-exclusive DLC? Lara Croft fans aren't so easily swayed, it seems. According to
GamesIndustry.biz, the gallivanting grave-robber has found herself exploring the interior of the PlayStation 3, more than any other system, with the release of
Tomb Raider: Underworld. The report notes that 51 percent of the game's initial UK sales (
before Monday?) were on Sony's monolithic platform, with the Xbox 360 accounting for 34 percent. The rest is made up of
Underworld's PC, Wii and DS versions.
While the news is somewhat surprising -- the Xbox 360 tends to enjoy a larger share of multiplatform sales -- it should be noted that PlayStation 3 owners missed out on the last two, post-reboot
Tomb Raider adventures. We'll see whether that reflects in the US sales once the month is over.

Between traveling and "quality family time," many Americans are being torn away from their beloved consoles due to the Thanksgiving holiday. So, before hitting the road, it might be worth picking up the
well-reviewed DS remake of
Chrono Trigger, one of the best RPGs of the 16-bit era (or ever, according to what company you keep). Although the reviews are clearly written from the standpoint of a 20- or 30-something with memories of playing the original on the SNES or PlayStation, they seem to agree that the game has held up over time.
- GamesRadar (100/100) "If you've never played Chrono Trigger, you owe it to yourself to finally give this gaming touchstone a whirl. And if you have played it before, you can play it again, for no other reason than to see how new it all still feels. We would normally hesitate to give any rerelease such a high score, but this is the ultimate edition of a true classic."
- 1UP (95/100): "For fans, the reason to pick up Chrono Trigger is simply because it's available, intact, and enhanced. For newcomers, it's because the game has easily withstood the test of time."
- Game Informer (95/100): "It's a true classic, and playing it should be a government-mandated rite of passage for any role-playing fan."

In what has become

Beginning on
Black Friday, you can look for a red DS emblazoned with Mario's trademark "M" and packaged with
New Super Mario Bros., as well as an Ice Blue model that's packing
Brain Age and a custom carrying case. Well, you can
look for the $149.99 bundles beginning on Black Friday, but don't be surprised if it's mid-February by the time a soccer mom decides against cutting your brake lines for buying one out from under her.

The best thing about Japan's Club Nintendo? The occasional
very cool
branded merchandise, but, mostly, the exclusive games. Now there's a glimmer of hope that one of the most popular of these may be offered as a loyalty prize by the
new North American chapter of the Club.
We're talking about the
Game & Watch Collection, which has only been available in Japan ... or for those willing to pay for it on eBay and various online retailers to the tune of $40 and up. But now the game has been rated by the
ESRB (it got an "E" rating, not surprisingly) leading to the inevitable conclusion / wishful thinking that it will be available in the States for some amount of Club Nintendo points.
The collection brings together re-creations of three classic Nintendo
Game & Watch LCD games:
Donkey Kong,
Oil Panic, and
Green House.

Just to be clear, this is magic we're talking about people. Magician's magic! The sorcerers at Konami announced that this February they will wave their styli through the air, casting a spell on the Nintendo DS with
Little Magician's Magic Adventure.The upcoming title is described as a mix of adventure and simulation-style role-playing, where players attend a magic school, learn to cast spells, go on adventures and, yes, build relationships with other students.
Little Magician's something or other also promises scads of customizable avatars and some 52 different adventures, as well as Wi-Fi connectivity for cooperative play and chatting using the game's "global magic alphabet." We imagine it's just like the regular alphabet, except it can't wear armor or use two-handed weapons.

Taking a break from merely educating the world about bees with tiny radios and environmental dangers, National Geographic has announced that it is getting into the video game biz. The educational institution has formed a new game division shockingly called National Geographic Games, which will be focused on delivering educational titles across all platforms, including PCs, consoles and handhelds.
Some early fruits of this venture have already fallen from the tree, including
Herod's Lost Tomb on the
iPhone, as well as
Namco Bandai's National Geographic: Panda for the DS. The division is also working with Sony on
National Geographic: Africa, with future projects including
Rain Forests and
Greencity also in the works. The division describes each of these efforts as offering "entertainment with substance," though whether or not that will keep players from tuning out after they get bored of ogling topless natives remains to be seen.

Normally, we'd be satisfied with a trailer depicting just a few of Lara's transitional talents. Perhaps a brief clip of her leaping over an ominous pit, or a quick snapshot of her scurrying up the side of a cliff. You know, that sort of thing.
But it seems we underestimate the lithe leading lady's prowess in
Tomb Raider: Underworld, her first built-for-next-gen adventure in archeology and endangered animal slaughter. Or in the case of one particular and rather large tentacled beast,
