Joystiq.com writes "No sooner does Sony (briefly) improve the PS3 user interface with the much-talked-about version 2.4 firmware update, than some at the company feel cocky enough to start badmouthing the competition's interface. Speaking to Next-Gen, PlayStation Network Director of Operations Eric Lempel took the bait in taking a few moments to compare Sony's redesigned PlayStation Store to Microsoft's Xbox Live Marketplace."
Electronic Arts has today apologised for a culturally sensitive blunder in FIFA 08 ? in which the Northern Ireland football team stand to The Soldier's Song, traditionally sung at United Ireland sporting events.
A regional newspaper in Northern Ireland reports that fans reacted with 'surprise' to hear the anthem represent their national team in the game.
One fan posted a shocked comment on an internet football forum to simply say, "So Northern Ireland has no identity now I suppose."
"E3 this year represents why all gamers on all platforms should be thankful for what many call the "console-war", or what we prefer to call here at XboxOZ360-gamer as a little "healthy-competition". The result has meant that gamers of all shapes and sizes are more spoilt for choice now, than at any time in recent history.
With the ESA losing support, many of the longer standing supporters will no longer be in attendance, but that doesn't mean to say the place will be empty of without support. So as in Part One, we are going to let some of the remaining staff members speak for themselves and tell you what interests them most, not just for the 360, but also for the Wii and PS3.
So let's continue checking out more What-Ifs, Rumours & Prayers for E3 '08..."
From Strategy Informer: "In the US, there are cheers from around the country. The latest Madden has been released. If American Football games aren't your cup of tea, then maybe it's the latest edition of NASCAR. Often that results in a disinterested grudge from us Brits. The last US-sport game I played was Madden on the Mega Drive. It kept me interested, but purely because pocket money was short and review samples a distant dream. With a copy of NASCAR 09 to review, tentative steps were taken. Those apprehensions were not unfounded."

This extensive gameplayer article tackles the sequels that should be announced at E3 2008.
"Sometimes the game industry seems so submerged in established franchises and straight-off-the-conveyor-belt sequels it seems impossible that any new IP has a chance of being noticed. But for every twenty Christmas cash cows that infest store shelves with their mediocrity, there is that one sequel we deeply yearn for ? that great game that demands another shot at the big time but is bewilderingly ignored. Maybe it has merely become lost in the forgotten back catalogue of a now defunct publisher or perhaps it has been buried beneath the egotistical loggerheads of past-it developers, given up on and stuck in developmental hell. Unable to find the light as fans yell from their couches? encore! Encore! Encore!"

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) will be launching the fourth version of PlayStation 2 (PS2) by Diwali this year. This will simultaneously be released in the European and Indian markets, said SCE country manager (PlayStation) Atindriya Bose to ET.
The higher-end version promises to be slimmer, sleeker and more suave in its looks. There will be no more external AC adapters, all of which will be in-built and the product price will also be the same as the earlier version (Rs 6,990).
SCE India will also be launching the playstation network for their PlayStation 33 in India, which will allow gamers to download free games and also buy them online. This portal is already available in the US and Europe.

The version is supposed to contain improvements over the regular version that's already released in Japan, but those improvements are probably the ones already applied to the North American version of the game.

So time has passed, and time heals all wounds right? It was with a hopeful heart that some people bought a copy of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, and tried firing it up with a Rock Band guitar, only to be greeted with a screen telling them, "An unsupported guitar peripheral has been detected."
Sigh.

Here's over a minute-and-a-half-lasting gameplay video of EA Sports' upcoming FIFA 09, to be released this October as per usual. The video originally appeared courtesy of France's PSM3 magazine, but was cut-through with interview and talk, full of information that flooded the internet a couple weeks back. Here's only the shakycam, but nevertheless first gameplay moments as recorded by PSM3.
What will happen to the Monkey Island series now that in early June 2008 LucasArts fired 100 out of its 350 employees? These people included key developers responsible for classics such as Star Wars: X-Wing (1993), Full Throttle (1995), and Grim Fandango (1998). VGB takes a look at Monkey Island 5 from past to present.

MGS4 has already sold more than one million copies throughout Europe, boosted by No1 chart entries in Germany, Spain and Sweden, according to the latest data from Media Control GfK and Dataspelsbranschen.
Nintendo's Mario Kart Wii, Square Enix's PSP exclusive Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, LucasArts' Lego Indiana Jones and Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV made top ten appearances in all three charts, while Brain Training, Wii Fit and Wii Play recorded multiple entries.
The Alone in the Dark series began life on PCs in 1992, and is widely credited with all but creating the 'survival horror' genre. However, over the years the market has not been kind to AitD, with the series never gaining the commercial success or critical acclaim the likes of Resident Evil or Silent Hill have enjoyed. After a failed attempt to revive the series with 2001 effort Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare, the series whimpered out and more or less disappeared from gaming's collective conscience.
That is until Eden Studios ? developers of V-Rally, and more recently ambitious-but-flawed racing game Test Drive Unlimited ? decided to reinvent the franchise for the discerning and demanding 2008 gamer. While the game has obviously been designed for the Xbox 360 and ported to other platforms as development has progressed, it is unclear whether the numerous flaws, irritating controls and poor design decisions which plague the PS2 version are the fault of Eden, or Hydravision, who handled this port.

VGChartz writes: "Metal Gear Solid 4 was the top selling title for the second week in a row, but Wii was the top selling console this week. PS3 sales dropped to the point where Xbox 360 was able to outsell it slightly.
Metal Gear Solid 4 remained the top selling non-bundled game for this week, but it is dropping rather quickly after a stellar debut at over 500,000 units last week. Following closely was Wii Fit which topped a million units in lifetime sales this week. Hardware sales roughly paralleled those two games ? the drop in Metal Gear Solid 4 was accompanied by a large drop in PS3 sales, while the increase in Wii Fit sales accompanied a large increase in Wii sales.
Year over year trends continue to indicate that this year is trending to be the biggest ever for the videogame industry in the Americas. All hardware except for the ancient PS2 was up from this time a year ago.

Gamervision reports:
''This week's Throwback article is pretty different for a couple of reasons. First of all, I've never reviewed a game from the PS2 era for my weekly old-school reviews, as most of them just don't seem old enough to warrant any kind of true nostalgia. However, we are so far into the next generation of gaming that publishers are started to talk about the next next-gen, so I think it's safe to say that last-gen games are now on the table. Also, despite being an unrelenting fan of the Final Fantasy series, I've never reviewed a game from the franchise before. Consider it a warm-up for when Final Fantasy XIII comes out (sometime in the next decade or so).
Before this month, I had actually only played through Final Fantasy X once. When it originally came out in late 2001, I had just moved away for college and left the PS2 behind at my parents' house. I had no money, so buying another one, or this game, was not an option. I finally played through it four years ago, and absolutely loved it. Last week, I was suddenly struck with the urge to play again, and I haven't stopped since.''

Kotaku's Brian Ashcraft writes: "Do you like numbers? Sony Computer Entertainment honcho Kaz Hirai loves numbers. In today's strategy planning meeting, Hirai pointed out that the PSP has currently sold over 37 million units. That's a lot! What's more (or less, actually), the PLAYSTATION 3 has shifted over 12 million units since launch. Grand total: Over 49 million. We're fairly certain that worldwide sales of both the PS3 and the PSP are over 50 million. That, and "Total Over 49 Million Units" doesn't sound as nearly nice as "Total Over 50 Million Units." So there you go."
Destructiod writes: "My brain is leaking while trying to find the logic in all of this, but Koei is planning to release Dynasty Warriors 6 on the PlayStation 2, and it's actually going to be better than the PS3/Xbox 360 versions. Yes, the first current-gen Dynasty Warriors is going to be superior on last-gen technology."
