"Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat, please put a penny in the Gates man's hat…"
Yup, that's right folks. It's time for gaming hardware and software companies and their online and high street retailers to start the traditional pre-Xmas price-cutting game, with some rather spectacular credit-crunch-friendly bargains on offer this year.
TechRadar gave you our definitive guide to getting the best Xbox 360 and Wii bargains this week. And it seems that Sony isn't going to take part in the latest round of price cuts, preferring to wait until Easter 2009 before hacking back the RRP of PS3. (Based on information leaked from an SCEE employee which the company was also quick to deny…)
If you're extra lucky you'll manage to nab a new Jasper-based 360, which means you should no longer have any 'red ring of death' worries as you are thirty hours into Gears 2.
Somewhat strangely, Nintendo seems to be jumping aboard the electronic book bandwagon, releasing a collection of a hundred modern classics on the DS on Boxing Day this year. Funny day to launch what seems to be a perfect stocking filler, but hey, who are we to get all 'marketing made simple' on their Japanese asses?...

U.S. sales of video game hardware, software, and accessories surged 36% in the first half of the year to $8.27 billion. That even outpaces the $6.1 billion grossed over the same period in 2007, which was a record year for the industry.
Analyst also predicts that Wii software will outpace rivals in 2008.
It's common knowledge that Nintendo is the only current platform holder to have made a profit from its hardware from the off, and now a number has been put on that - $6.
A report on Forbes reveals each Wii unit brings in an operating profit of $6 for Nintendo, according to David Gibson, an analyst at Macquarie Securities. By comparison, Sony loses money on each PlayStation sold, while Microsoft is currently able to break even.
After the insane amounts of free Burnout Paradise DLC that Criterion has released, it's hardly surprising that the developer has decided to get paid for its next batch of downloadable treats.
The upcoming Big Surf Island update for the ball-out racer was previously touted as free content, like previous DLC packages, but Criterion has confirmed that it will instead be "premium paid-for content".
It didn't reveal a price, but to be fair the update looks bloody brilliant so we wouldn't mind handing over a few quid.
Greedy Raven writes, "No, I didn't get lazy here. The first Prince of Persia game on the next generation consoles is the first in the series without a subtitle. To be honest, I doubt it will need one. The series excelled as an action adventure game in the previous generation with little problem at all. The unique game play elements and stories of the past generation always brought something new to the table..."
Following up on last week's announcement of a Resident Evil 5 limited edition package for Japan, Capcom shared details today on console-specific bonuses for the game. PS3 owners will get a special making-of video segment. Xbox 360 owners will get a Deluxe Edition which includes a soundtrack CD and ships in a special metal case.
PS3Addiction.com writes:
"2 Years in the making. How do the 3 console giants stack up after 2 full years in the market? We have your breakdown right here. right now..
Technical specs, high definition, system malfunctions. All of these things have played a role in the current generation of gaming. As every gamer knows, there are three major consoles contending for their rightful place in your living room, each with its own unique positives and negatives. After 2 full years on the market (3 for the Xbox 360) we would like to take a moment to review where each system stands, and where they are going from here."
Microsoft have announced that fans of the smash hit blockbuster Gears of War can further immerse themselves in the Gears of War 2 experience by enjoying the alternate soundtrack this Christmas.
Following on from the Mad World TV advert that accompanied the first game, Microsoft have again delivered an emotive, cutting edge TV ad for Gears of War 2 with Last Day. Invoking the emotion and desperation of humanity's last stand against overwhelming odds, the ad uses the track How It Ends, by Colorado-based band Devotchka...
FinalFantasy-XIII.net: A little while ago we were teased with a scan saying "CLOUD message coming soon". We didn't hear anything more after that but look what's turned up on Amazon Japan. It seems Dengeki, the publishers of CLOUD volume 1, are releasing another CLOUD book at the same time Famitsu is releasing the Re: Final Fantasy XIII DVD. This new book is coming out on December 12th
Neocrisis: Well, thanks to losing an important match where I almost beat this really good Zangief player (he had 25 wins in a row! Not on me though...) but ended up losing thanks to the d-pad register my down press as left, I was finally fed up. I came up with an extremely simple fix that mixes two d-pad mod techniques and gives you much better, precise controls in Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD and other XBLA games. Granted, the d-pad won't be perfect after this, but it'll feel more responsive.

Someone decides to prank call "Coast to Coast AM with George Noory" by describing a dream that sounds very much like Fallout 3.
Ever since Sonic Adventure 2 on the Sega Dreamcast the hedgehog has suffered some pretty poor releases. Sonic fans have been hurting for a long time now with titles like "Sonic Riders" and more recently "Sonic The Hedgehog". What little good will gamers had left for the blue blur is quickly evaporating thanks to Sonic Unleashed, an otherwise decent Sonic game ruined by brawling levels that turn Sonic into a werehog combatant. So why exactly do the development team keep screwing things up exactly? David Clayman caught up with a member of the development team on Sonic Unleashed and asked them exactly this.
Maybe you missed it last weekend, but on November 23, 2008, Guns N' Roses released their 6th album, "Chinese Democracy", after a 15 year wait! Many had given up all hope of ever seeing the album and had moved on, but apparently good things come to those who wait, as the record is getting good reviews.
So, what does this have to do with gaming? Well, here in the gaming world we have our own version "Chinese Democracy" - it's called Duke Nukem Forever. At this point, we've been waiting for this game for 11 years. It was announced in 1997, and slated to be released mid-1998, and has gone through innumerable engines and iterations, still with no release in sight; last anyone heard it was slated for a late-2008 release, but we're not holding our breath. No one ever expected to see Guns N' Roses release "Chinese Democracy" and seeing it be released ignites a little hope that one day, soon(?), we might get out hands on Duke Nukem Forever.

Video interview about 'The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf' for PS3 and Xbox360.
The new Prince of Persia is a departure from the previous games in the series, the design philosophy has changed and he shares the story with a rather attractive female companion. Is this enough to freshen up this platform hopping franchise however?
Torrence Davis of The Bitbag writes, "On this episode we discuss what Blu-Ray really is, a storage medium. We talk about how many feel that graphics are better because of Blu-Ray when in fact graphics are better because of the hardware, not the medium that the data is stored on. Also on this episode:
- Hiphopgamer argues back and forth with a listener who says, "Home is a virtual doll house"
- Weapon X has some details on the PS4 possibly being released in 2010
- Torrence strikes back at some readers who accuse him of being a fanboy because of his response to the Kikizo interview with Square-Enix
- Digi Guys pull the plug on Hiphopgamer

Yes, the PC is hugely upgradeable - and a bloody good job, too, otherwise you'd never get to play all those games built with cutting edge technology by crazy Scandinavian ex-demo hackers. And anyway, a console is upgradeable: when the next Xbox or PlayStation comes out, we sell the old one and buy a new one. Easy.
And 11 more reasons the PC is an inferior choice for games...
Take a closer look at how the Dunia engine performs on PS3 and 360.
Shane "Clover" writes:
"Great job letting pride get in the way of a good job and giving 30% of Xbox players that hassle of having to send in their Xbox whenever they saw that Red Ring."
"Soul Breed" strategy/embarrassing food eating RPG Record of Agarest War first hit the PS3 last fall. Now, it's got the inevitable Xbox 360 version. There are differences, it seems, big differences.
Does Epic's sequel to the beloved Gears of War stack up to the hype? Or does it fall short from fanboy grace?

Japan - In the same week that the Wii has crossed 7 million units sold, the 360 is once again playing as a potential spoiler against Sony's PS3.
From the source: The long-awaited Jasper-based versions of the Xbox 360 have finally emerged on the market. These new consoles have a redesigned motherboard with the new 65-nanometer version of the ATI (now AMD) graphics chip that doesn't run as hot as previous versions. There are other changes that improve the reliability and usability of the system as well.
Criterion haven't released anything new on this awesome, premium downloadable content since way back in May, so it's high time Criterion gave you a little update.
In the lead up to Black Friday, videogame sales continue ramp up in the Americas. Hardware sales increased to over 1m units this week, up 15% from last week. The total hardware sold is less than a year ago at this time, when Black Friday arrived earlier than in 2008. However, outside of that timing difference, the recession does not appear to be harming the industry. The real reason for the seasonal increases is of course the volume of top software released. Left 4 Dead, Animal Crossing, Need For Speed, as well as new entries in the Mortal Kombat and Tomb Raider series pushed all hardware sales up except for Wii, which is being withheld a bit for an enormous stock deployment on Black Friday.
Wavw: "In the early morning rush at a Wal-Mart on Black Friday, customers fight over the last X-Box 360 console."
Greg Howson writes:
"Am I the only one a little surprised to see that the Tomb Raider Underworld is selling better on PS3 than 360? Yes, you could argue that 360 owners have simply too many games available at the moment - including exclusives like Gears of War 2 and Fable 2 – and that Lara has to join the queue. Plus 360 owners do – as a stereotype – prefer their shooters to their platform puzzle games. But PS3 owners have got exclusives like LittleBigPlanet and Resistance 2, as well as access to most of same third party games that 360 owners have. So why has Lara proved more popular to PS3 owners than 360?"
dailygamesnews.com - Ex-Capcom and Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami has said he won't be playing Resident Evil 5 when it arrives because it'll cause him too much stress...
