We know, it's been a while since he's updated this brew, but that is not to say that he was working on a "huge secret code", simply, he was just busy with other stuff.brbrNow, this release provides for a good number of bugfixes, most important of which is the Safe Walk ability. As Jeff explains, this lets brbrp style="padding-left: 40px; padding-right: 40px;" ...non-DS users have the ability to avoid accidentally attacking kiwis when they go careening through the hallways. The intent is you can bind it to,say [L], and then hold that when you want to move safely. If you want [L] to attack, you can change the global option. SDL users may use the ctrl key. Unless they are using vi-keys in which case I'm afraid they are out of luck for now. I can only hope those players believe that Safe Walk is for weaklings./pbrHere's the full changelog for Powder Release 108:brulliThe mouse will work again for the onscreen keyboard in SDL builds. (Ilya, Teun Peelen)/liliDescription when wearing necro dress code spells servant right. (David Damerell, Andreas Bohm)/liliVacuum correctly spelled in death message. (David Damerell)/lili"Click on your self to search" rather than Clicking. (Narius Varigor)/liliStarting as cultist will immediately tell you gt;lt;0 V 's whim. (hotpoo)/liliLoading a save game worshiping gt;lt;0 V will likewise report the whim./liliZapping a hostile wand of create monster will have a chance of the creature turning on you. (hotpoo)/liliNew boon from gods: hostile creatures surrounding you can be smitten. (Indirectly Ambvai)/liliEarth hammers can be forged into artifact earth hammers with the proper setup. (David Damerell)/liliLevel up hitpoints and magic points are now 2d2 1 rather than 1d4 1, giving a tighter distribution and slight boost to the average. (Teun Peelen)/liliEarth hammers have an encyclopedia entry. (David Damerell)/liliWhen you can move in diagonals you can use the diagonals of the numberpad. (Andreas Bohm)/liliThere is now a SafeWalk mode which stops you from attacking when walking about. You can toggle this by pressing Ctrl when using the arrow keys or binding the Safe Walk command to a button in a href="http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/gba/4550" id="tag" title="Nintendo's GameBoy Advance"GBA/a mode. (Andreas Bohm)/liliThe delete key works the same as the backspace key, a useful feature on Macs whose keyboards lack a backspace. (Roger Bolton)/liliWishing for a level teleport no longer uses atoi() so hopefully works on gpsphone. (Roger Bolton)/liliWe now promote room flags to map flags when loading. This way loading the game on the final levels will not turn the levels into floor-diggable and hence suddenly create holes to short-circuit the levels. (Ambvai, debugged by Andreas Bohm)/liliA case where you could achieve barbarian dress code despite not wearing armour is fixed. (Malte Helmert)/liliYou now gain piety for the barbarian and necro dress codes. PSP homebrew developer Mr. Shizzy (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/shizzy/10757) has released his 5.01 Easy Installer application - the totally "n00b proof installer," as he calls it.
Note that this application isn't really for everyone, chances are you don't need it because you already have your FW (and CFW) updates in place. But for those who do need some assistance, here are some notes from Mr. Shizzy:
This is nothing more than a simple installer to apply the SONY (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/sony/880) 5.01 Firmware fixes to 5.00 m33. (There have been safety checks put in place, to prevent someone flashing this to the wrong firmware...) Some people don't like manually flashing their PSP, so maybe they will find this helpful.
All set? Here's the video to demonstrate how easy it is to install:
The more notes are included in the download page and in the readme file in the downloadable archive. If all else fails, you can contact the develop by visiting the forum thread linked below.

This is something he admitted that EA had to struggle with in recent years but is working to correct such self-destructive behavior. It would otherwise be the beginning of the end, he explained.
The problem is that the quickest way to increase profits is to cut research and development so that a given company can see a nice spike in their numbers within a 24-month period. Such increased profitability will naturally improve their image in the financial market so there is an obvious attraction to this route that Riccitiello describes as a drug in and of itself.
A lot of companies fall prey to relentlessly pursuing profitability that the quality of their products starts to suffer and in the end, so does their profitability. Companies go through cycles where they are on the drug of profits, Riccitiello said. I've not only seen it, I've experienced it.

Scans from the recent issue of V-Jump (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/v-jump/8316) magazine have surfaced, showing Final Fantasy XIII (PS3 (http://ps3.qj.net/Final-Fantasy-XIII/cid/1717), Xbox 360 (http://xbox360.qj.net/Final-Fantasy-XIII/cid/5204)), FF Versus XIII (http://ps3.qj.net/Final-Fantasy-Versus-XIII/cid/1718), and FF Agito XIII (http://pspupdates.qj.net/category/Final-Fantasy-Agito-13/cid/5237). Some of the Fabula Nova Crystallis (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/fabula-nova-crystallis/7217) screens and artwork seem to be a recycled batch from the previous media (screens, trailers, scans, etc.). In fact, V-Jump's coverage looks strangely similar to Shonen Jump's scans from last week (http://pspupdates.qj.net/FF-13-Versus-13-Agito-13-scans-characters-get-some-names-more-screens/pg/49/aid/124930). Nevertheless, we'll take what we can get.
Reportedly, some of these screens were captured from the DKS and TGS trailers. Again, we see more of Agito's red scarves, FF13's Lightning, Snow, and Pigtailed Girl, and Versus' topless character renders (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/character-renders/6843) of Noct and Stella.

Another amazing homebrew coming your way! LightWay is a shmup homebrew game that looks like it was inspired (graphic-wise, at least) by Patapon (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Patapon-2/cid/5196)'s vector art, with an extra dash of Fl0w (http://ps3.qj.net/Flow-Not-just-for-the-PS3/pg/49/aid/67290) to make things, well, flow. Just look at those screens, man! Viola! Fantastique! Merci beaucoup and all that!
At first glance, I myself thought it came from RealTechVR (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/realtechvr/13198) - the guys behind No Gravity. LightWay looks just as professionally done as RealTechVR's work - but nope, LightWay is actually from French dev team Motion Studio, namely Pjeff (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/pjeff/15064) (coding) and Cladil (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/cladil/15767) (graphics). Pjeff's actually been around before (he's the guy behind Super Mario Toy (http://www.qj.net/Super-Mario-Toy-Final-mini-games-code-revamped/pg/49/aid/120863)), but anyways, give them a warm welcome, guys!
For now, we get a demo - no complaints there. The gameplay is similar to many a shoot 'em up title: progressively difficult levels as you advance, various enemy units coming from left, right, and center, and, of course, some bad ass boss at the end of a stage. You can read up on more info in the download page linked below.

Ubisoft (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/ubisoft/178) announced today that Tom Clancy (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/tom-clancy/5697)'s EndWar will also be dropping on the DS and PSP platforms sometime in the future. No confirmed release windows yet for both handheld versions, but for now, we get a quick peek at some of its features.
Instead of having the same team who did the PS3 (http://ps3.qj.net/category/Tom-Clancy-s-EndWar/cid/3790) and Xbox 360 (http://xbox360.qj.net/category/Tom-Clancy-s-EndWar/cid/3791) versions of EndWar, Ubisoft's given developing rights to the Funatics studio for the handheld game. As you may guess, gameplay will be different from its console-cousins. For one, the DS gets stylus-input.
EndWar on the PSP and DS will not be using the same RTS engine that the PS3 and 360 version uses. Instead, the handheld spin-offs will be more of turn-based strategy, complete with "move" and "execute" phases. Sorry, no voice commands are supported (http://ps3.qj.net/Ubisoft-on-Tom-Clancy-s-EndWar-voice-command-sci-fi-arms-and-more/pg/49/aid/114354).
There are 30 campaigns included in the game, and if that doesn't satisfy you enough, you can even create your own missions and share them with a friend. Each faction in the game will be composed of some 20 units, dispersed among ground, air, or naval.

Here's his latest quote from the Game Informer:
It seems by and large that gamers are incredibly smart; the average gamer seems to know more about what makes a good game than the average person at a publisher.
It's true - gamers are smart. In many ways, no one really knows what a gamer wants out of a game better than a gamer. Haven't we all gone, "It'd be better if..." at some point while playing? Whether it's a bad camera angle, crappy in-game dialogue, or unreasonably hard-to-get items, we all have our ideas as to how to improve a game.
It's nice to see Gabe Newell recognizing gamer intellect - especially since he's a publisher (being a gamer too sure helps). He ought to use that recognition more when bashing consoles, though.

Homebrew dev pipagerardo (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/pipagerardo/15599) has released a Lua (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/lua/25)-coded 1945 clone for the PSP. Version 1.0 currently sports 11 different enemy types: 9 aircraft, a ship, and a submarine.
You can play 1945 v1.0 as a sidescroller or as a vertical shooter, but for the latter you'll have to contend with some tricky hand positioning as the shoot and bomb actions are bound to the X and O buttons respectively. Movement is done by using either the d-pad or the analog stick.
It's a rather fun little game, especially the bundled music, which you can change with the L trigger. 1945 v1.0 also includes support for up to 9 different mp3s, so you can put in whatever music you want. Other features include a screenshot option (R trigger) and editable levels.

As of today, these two titles become available as DLC on the PlayStation Store (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/playstation-store/10699). Why not give your new FW 5.00 for a spin, access the PSP Store, and download your games directly into your PSP eh?
Either route you take (via PS3 Store, PC, or PSP) the games cost US 14.99 a pop.

Image: http://img.qj.net/uploads/articles_module/124973/psp-2.jpg?225094 There seems to be a rumor going around that FW 5.0 (http://www.psphome.com/forum/PSP-Firmware-5-0-now-available/pg/49/aid/124923) blocks PSPs with custom firmwares from accessing the PlayStation Store (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/playstation-store/10699). Alek, Dark AleX (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/dark-alex/5160)'s webmaster, squashes this out as just rumor. Says Alek on Sceners:
There are some rumors around the net, that newest psp fw, 5.00, will block the access to PSStore to non-original firmwares.
It will be interesting to clarify that this is just a rumor, and it's most probably a fake information.
You'd might remember times where someone said that 3.00ofw was going to be THE firmware, unhackable, etc etc.
Well, atm, using the future systemctrl.prx for 5.00 cfw, it doesn't even blocks the partial cfw made by now, so from here it's interesting to confirm that you shouldn't believe on rumors. So, PSStore won't be a problem with future cfw's.
So there you have it. Alek seems pretty confident that the current and any future FW update won't be a problem for firmwares. And I don't think anyone will doubt that Dark AleX and Team M33 (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/team-m33/14124) can handle whatever Sony (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/sony/880) throws their way. Their track record alone is proof of it.

Just as it looked like Take-Two finally got a chance to take a breather after all of their legal woes, here comes another lawsuit. This time, it's from none other than a former exec of the company itself.
According to GamePolitics, Robert Alexander, a former member of Take-Two's Board of Directors, is suing the company for US 50 million for allegedly breaching an oral employment contract.
Alexander says that he and former Take-Two CEO Ryan Brant (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/ryan-brant/12869) had been negotiating for Alexander's distribution company, Game Ballers, to partner with Take-Two. Brant, however, left the company before it could be finalized. When Eibeler took over, Alexander was left with nothing but an oral agreement that never ended up on paper.
There are some pretty big numbers involved in this lawsuit. GamePolitics notes that according to Alexander, he was supposed to get "US 240,000 in annual salary with 20 annual raises, a US 25,000 monthly expense allowance, 50,000 shares of T2 stock plus options and US .50 per game handled by his distribution company."
Wow. I guess his only problem right now lies in proving that he really was supposed to get all that cash. I'm no lawyer, and there are ways of enforcing oral agreements in court, but it looks like this'll end up as a matter of one guy's word against another.

Thanks to all the readers who told us about it. The big thing in FW 5.0 is the addition of direct access to the PlayStation Store (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/playstation-store/10699).
Also new in this update are a full-size on-screen keyboard, a sleep timer that users can enable during music playback, and the ability to use the PSP Slim's video out feature to display PSOne (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/psone/2784) titles at full screen resolution depending on the TV the Slim is connected to.
QJ.NET reader AshTR also clued us in on the following additions included in the changelog:
* The system will automatically change to USB mode when a USB cable is connected.
* The [Original] theme has been redesigned.

Gamecock Media Group (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/gamecock-media-group/12818), the independent video game publisher whose name can't be posted on our comments section without being censored, has just been acquired by SouthPeak Interactive (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/southpeak-interactive/5141).
This was announced today by SouthPeak. Both companies have put a lot of emphasis on getting independently-developed titles out to the general gaming masses, so this could prove to be a good thing for indie game devs out there.
Gamecock fans also won't have to worry about the company's release schedule getting affected by the acquisition. Both Legendary (Xbox 360 (http://xbox360.qj.net/Legendary-The-Box-screenshots-mythological-creatures/pg/49/aid/104648), PlayStation 3 (http://ps3.qj.net/category/Legendary-The-Box/cid/4475), PC) and Mushroom Men (DS (http://ds.qj.net/Mushroom-Men-The-Spore-Wars/cid/3638), Wii (http://wii.qj.net/Mushroom-Men-The-Spore-Wars/cid/3642)) are still on track for a release in the current quarter.

PlayStation Store (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/playstation-store/10699) senior manager Grace Chen posted a demo video of what we can expect from the PSP Store once the PSP firmware 5.00 goes live. It's quick one:
No word yet on when FW 5.00 will go live, but if yesterday's speculation holds true once more, it could roll out maybe this week or the next.
Remember how a PSN EU community leader announced yesterday that PSN (EU) would be down for system maintenance (http://www.qj.net/PSN-downtime-tomorrow-may-herald-FW-updates-by-Oct-15/pg/49/aid/124844)? Assumedly, this system maintenance would herald the launch of the PSP Store (which requires you to upgrade your PSP to FW 5.00).
Grace Chen also confirmed that PSN will be unavailable in North America (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/north-america/2901) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. PST today. Considering how Sony (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/sony/880)'s rolling out press release after press release about their upcoming PSP and PS3 firmwares, it seems as if they're already setting up shop (so to speak) for a go-live date.
Meanwhile, Chen also reaffirmed that the PS3 FW will indeed include Flash Player (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/flash-player/608) 9 support, an interesting bit we uncovered earlier (http://www.qj.net/More-PSP-FW-5-00-PS3-FW-2-50-features-surface-PSP-TV-out-feature-expanded-PS3-gets-Flash-9/pg/49/aid/124878).
Thanks to tipster Fadil for the heads up!

This diagnostic tool should help with Pandora installation.
This release, version 1.1, has been expanded to use the following currently available IPLs for the PSP:
* Time Machine IPL
* Boosters Multi IPL
* z3ros0ul Single IPL (Sleep Fix)
* z3ros0ul Multi IPL (Sleep Fix)
* Classic Pandora IPL
According to the dev, it also uses the three normal format methods: FAT32, FAT16, and MSPformat.
To run this app, you'll need a PC running either Windows 2000, XP, or Vista, a Memory Stick (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/memory-stick/287) Pro Duo, and a PSP or a card reader that supports your memory stick. There's no readme file included in the download, so if you have any questions we suggest clicking on the source link.
