Long post here, get ready. Following the release of M33 custom firmware, I decided to see how my custom firmware could compare when updated to 3.51. XR is based loosely on OE, but I have no association with or rights to OE or Dark_AleX (please see notes). Here?s the current info for ?3.51XR?:

Fixed compatibility issues with modules and resources. M33 has them.
Bug fixes.
Added XR recovery menu.

Increased theme compatibility.
Replaced network update with my custom firmware updater.
Load modules & resources from memory stick.
Config file on the MS for other configuration (spoof version number, recovery theming, etc.)
Ability to have all 12 BG images as full-res.
Features planned:

Play MP3/WAV/OGG on boot instead of opening sound. No length restriction.
Boot password protection & integrate an adapted HideMedia.
Ability to edit config file on MS from recovery & add MAC spoofing (only affects XMB - iDstorage is untouched).
Add super features such as dump/write NAND image, dump/write iDstorage to recovery.
Increase no-UMD compatibility.
Please don?t ask for it. There are four people testing it, and we don?t plan on having any more. If you would like to recommend some new features, though, please do say.

Jas0nuk and lan.st admin, have just told us of the construction of a new 3.51 Custom Firmware.

A team of around 10 coders, who want to remain anonymous for the moment, have started, as for the 3.51 M33, to reverse the DA firmwares, to create their own CF 3.51.

Unlike the 3.51 M33, they do not wish simply to make a ?3.51 OE?, as the 3.51 M33, but they wish to improve it, to make a version of a quality equivalent or higher than the Firmwares of Dark_AleX.

Currently under development, a date of release is not in talk.

If you installed CFW 3.51 M33 on your PSP, you may have noticed that the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) features weren't working on homebrew programs. The M33 team were made aware of this and rolled out a fix.

Apparently, a secondary effect that 3.51 wlan.prx caused in 1.50 wlan.prx stopped WLAN based homebrews from working. The M33 people gave word that this issue was caused by Sony code 3.51 wlan.prx and not by M33 code. They also found that the 3.40 wlan.prx did not have the same problem.

September can't come soon enough. That's when the public will be able to get their hands on the incredible God of War: Chains of Olympus demo that we got to play at E3. The game is everything a God of War fan could possible want: beautiful, gory, and utterly exhilarating.

The controls are incredible intuitive, and it was within mere seconds that we were able to start pulling off combos and dodges with relative ease. Kratos' basic moves return unchanged, but there are a few new special attacks, exclusive for the PSP edition. We were surprised to see the dodge return, in spite of the second analog stick. In order to jump out of an enemy's way, pressing down on both shoulder buttons whilst using the analog nub will allow Kratos to jump away. It's surprisingly intuitive and easy to use.

It should go without saying that the game is beautiful, taking advantage of all 333MHz the system has to offer. It is everything a PS2 God of War game should be ... but on a handheld. And knowing Ready at Dawn, we knew they'd be able to pull it off.

Sony PR, Patrick Seybold had this to say: "The newly designed PSP wil replace the original PSP design starting in September with the $169.99 PSP Core Pack and the $199.99 Daxter PSP Entertainment Pack." So if for some reason you like your handhelds with more bulk and less capabilities, quickly go out, and buy the original PSP while supplies last.

3 - Download official 3.51 eboot, rename it to 351.PBP and place it on "ms0:/PSP/GAME/M33CREATOR/" or "ms0:/PSP/GAME150/M33CREATOR/"

Destroy All Humans! has done well for Pandemic, and so it's no surprise that the alien with attitude is getting another sequel. The PSP edition will be called Destroy All Humans! Big Willy Unleashed. It's not being developed by Pandemic, but instead Locomotive Games (Cars PSP) is handling the reigns. You'll once again take control of Crypto as he tries to destroy the 1970s by UFO or on foot. THQ's marketing man had this to say:

"The Destroy All Humans! franchise has consistently delivered a unique combination of fun and original gameplay delivering irreverent humor and over the top destruction that has garnered worldwide acclaim and commercial success". He had more to say, but really it just sounded like he was trying to anally probe us, so we ran away.

Destroy All Humans! Unleashes its Big Willy in the first half of 2008.

This may be redundant, but I thought it was good info...

12/07/2007 - Well after waiting for a bit, Sony has finally released more up-to-standard pictures worth looking at The Slim PSP seems to have a much more curvy look to it then before, and it seems more solid as well.






Comparison?s between the two:

1. No IR Port
2. The battery pack open/button is different.
3. The speaker system is now located near the top of the PSP.
4. The mic/earphone port is now moves up instead of being in the left groove. The mic port is also a video-out port interestingly enough.
5. The memory stick slot is somewhat different, since it?s not in any of the prototypes.
6. The standard battery pack is 1200 MaH vs the original one of 1800 MaH, don?t know how that makes the battery last longer at all.
7. The analog nub seems a bit bigger then usual.

At the end it seems like a matter of give and take really, most of it is cosmetics but there are a few changes that people love like video out that may make buying a new one a reality.

We got our hands on a fully functional redesigned PSP, and we immediately grabbed pictures of the firmware that was installed on the system. Currently unreleased, version 3.60 was installed on the system. All of the features that are available in 3.60 will not work on the old PSP system, and it's unclear whether or not an older PSP system will even display the features found in this update.




UMD Cache is used to increase the load speeds of games. As revealed earlier, the cache is added RAM found in the redesigned system.




USB Charge allows players to charge their PSP battery by connecting their systems via USB. Previously, the system would drain power when stuck in USB mode.




Connected Display Settings contains the settings for the new video-out feature.




Within the display settings, PSP owners can change the type of TV that's connected, and settings for screensavers. We connected a PSP to a TV and were impressed by the results: UMD movies look fantastic, but games will be bordered. PSP games are rendered at 480x272, progressive scan only. Because it's output at 480x272, there will be black borders all around the image when playing on the television.

Sony have announced that a new PlayStation Portable, dubbed the PSP Slim & Lite, will launch in Europe (plus the US and Japan) in September.

The new PSP will be come in several designs. Piano black, Ice Silver, Felicia Blue, Lavender Purple, Rose Pink and a special pure white version with a picture of Darth Vader on the back. They will be released in bundles. One with a 1GB memory stick and Daxter and the other with the Family Guy "Freakin' Sweet" UMD. The Darth Vader design will be released in a bundle with Star Wars Battlefront. Each pack will cost $199.

The video-out port means the new PSP will allow users to experience UMD video, pictures and movies from Memory Stick Duo and game software titles on their TVs at home. It?s also equipped with an enhanced feature to temporarily store game data from UMDs, reducing load time during game play; plus the ability to charge the unit through a PlayStation 3 or PC via USB cable during data transfer.

According to various internet reports, new copies of the exploitable Lumines PSP game title are being patched and shipping with a v3.50 requirement. Looks like Sony are firing on all cylinders when it comes to trying to block out homebrew as quickly as possible on the PSP format.

According to the French' GEN' network of websites, Sony is to release a revisied edition of the PSP which only features improved copy-protection to prevent the launching of any piracy as well as homebrew on the PSP system. This theory also explains why we've been hearing reports (dutch PSP recall news) that the PSP has been hard to come by in various regions across Europe. We will find out shortly if this is the case, but this is in no way related to the PSP 'v2'.

PC Advisor thinks they have a great idea on how Sony can turn the Resistance: Fall of Man controversy into a positive - they suggest that Sony install a PSP in the back of church pews thus drawing in youth into a place of a moral guidance and therfore halting all gun activities.

Sony remains committed to UMD
Future of format is bright, says Koller

Sony's John Koller has said that the company remains committed to the UMD format despite suggestions that support from movie companies is waning.

Speaking to Pocket Gamer Koller, who is senior marketing manager for PSP, said, "We'll never walk away from our base. Whether it's movies or game content, third parties have an incredible opportunity to utilise it.

"UMD possesses many strengths, from size to form factor to portability," He continued. "Duplication of UMDs is much easier, cheaper than cartridges. We've really optimised time and cost by going with a disc-based format."

Koller's comments follow news that the most recent PSP firmware update includes an ISO loader which would allow users to play games stored on the Memory Stick. Some have speculated that Sony would be moving away from the UMD format in favor of downloadable content.

Koller admitted that the UMD has a downside. "There's no question the biggest weakness is related to porting games from other platforms. Publishers are concerned about the size of UMD because they can't cram a DVD game on to it," he said.

Castlevania creator Koji Igarashi told Pocket Gamer about a different kind of disadvantage: "The slowness of the seeking speed of UMD is a weakness," he stated, adding that "loading speed becomes a big problem for UMD".

While not specifically addressing the loading speed, Koller said "UMD is a unique medium to create games, and developers need to understand that when tackling the system."

"The future of UMD is bright," he proclaimed.

Dark AleX skipping 3.50 OE, working on 3.51 OE instead

French PSP news site PSP-Gen has posted some very good and important news concerning the PSP homebrew scene.

Unfortunately, according to Mathieulh, Dark AleX will not be releasing custom firmware 3.50 OE, so those who have been waiting for it won't see it. The good news is that Dark AleX will be developing custom firmware 3.51 OE instead to keep our psp's as current as possible and to fight against Sony's attitude towards the homebrew community.

There has been no time frame yet for when 3.51 OE will come out, but we will let you know as soon as it does. Keep checking back here for updates.

Official ISO loader found in FW 3.50, 3.51

More news from the PSP homebrew front. Mathieulh has explained on the Devsgen PSP forums that Sony has included an official ISO loader in PSP firmware versions 3.50 and 3.51. The loader is called np9660.prx and will apparently let PSP users load ISO files off their memory sticks.

The first explanation that comes to mind regarding the official ISO loader is that Sony is planning to release downloadable PSP titles either through PSN or a similar service geared exclusively for the PSP. The company has already mentioned earlier this year that a download service for the PSP is in the works.

French PSP news site PSP-Generation also notes that Dark AleX and Mathieulh will be patching the np9660.prx file for use in custom firmware 3.51 OE.

Well, I just used my PSP to download the latest Network Update and it was 3.51. So it looks like SONY may have patched the Lumines exploit. There is no confirmation yet but I think we all know what that means. Lets hope people have finally gotten wiser and don't all flock to upgrade to 3.51 just because it is something new.

I'm sure we will all await to hear from Team C+D on decryption.

Video Tutorial: Downgrade your 3.50 psp

In case you've been living under a rock you should all know by now about the "Illuminati" Exploit that was released by the Noobz team. Just in case you dont know, it allows any psp up to version 3.50 to be downgraded with the use of a umd copy of Lumines.

There are step-by-step instructions on how to use the downgrader and to help avoid any confusion and unwanted bricking, here is a video clip showing how you can perform the process.

Sony has just sent an e-mail to members of the PlayStation Underground, with an exclusive piece of concept art and a new screenshot. Ru Weerasuriya, director of Chains of Olympus, mused over developing the title:

"It's no easy task bringing God of War to the PSP. Fans have come to expect these huge landscapes, complex gameplay, and visceral combat that God of War I and II gave them. To bring that same experience on the PSP, we are pushing the hardware further than ever before. We're really pleased with what we have so far but we're not done yet. We still have a few tricks up our sleeves. I'm also really proud of the story of Chains of Olympus and I can assure you that there'll be some mind-bending puzzles in there for you guys."

While it's true that this doesn't provide us with any new details on the game, we're pleased that Sony is still reaching out to its most dedicated fans. We're confident that Ready at Dawn will produce a title of the same magnitude as its console brethren, and hope to get some play time at E3.

Not to be left out of the Civ lovin', the PSP is getting a Civ fix in the form of the brand new rendition, Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution. The official press release is a bit loose on exactly which handhelds will be getting this title, saying only that Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution will be coming to "next gen consoles and handhelds." We think we can safely assume a Nintendo DS version will be dropping in tune with the Sony PSP's release but hey, why get the Nintendo version? (wink, wink). The game is said to have "extensive multiplayer capabilities" with "integrated video and voice chat." Voice chat on the PSP? Maybe not, but at least having "extensive multiplayer capabilities" and "downloadable content" should prove a worthwhile venture on the PSP, especially for Civ gamers on the go. 16 civilizations are making the grade here, with Sid Meier himself in the hotseat as lead designer. Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution is set for a Spring 2008 release, so we imagine it won't be much longer before we can share some screen shots. Stay tuned.

Firing Squad is reporting that Warner Bros. Interactive will be bringing the driver injuring Flatout to PSP. Flatout Head On will not be developed by series regular Bugbear Interactive, but instead Six by Nine will be doing the honors. The previous Flatout games were somewhat Burnout clones, but with an emphasis on dirt road racing, and driver hurling mini-games (not unlike Sony's Pain). This fall we'll find out if Flatout Head On can compete with the PSP racing pack.

In what must surely be one of the most ridiculous PR stunts in videogame history, Lara Croft - model Karima Adebibe - has opened a women-only beach in Italy.

On the plus side, we do have images from the event (wouldn't be worth it otherwise, eh?) featuring lots of girls in bikinis and Adebibe showing the ladies her shooters.

Just for your reference like, the beach is located in Riccione, which is apparently an exclusive resort near Rimini on the east coast of the country.

The women-only beach has been named Pink Beach. Sigh.

violent video game advert has been banned from London Underground.

Advertising watchdogs said the advert, which shows a wrecked car next to a burning tyre, was "irresponsible" and likely to encourage violence and dangerous driving.

The advert was for the world's biggest games maker, Electronic Arts' Burnout Dominator.

The advert included the headline "Inner peace through outer violence".

It comes a week after censors banned another game, Manhunt2, from hitting the market.

EA said the advert's message was that playing the Burnout Dominator game might relieve stress and tension in real life.

But, in its ruling, the Advertising Standards Authority said: "We considered that the vivid depiction of the crashed car and burning tyre, combined with the slogans implication that people could achieve inner peace through acts of violence, was likely to cause serious or widespread offence.

"We noted Electronic Arts argument that the ad's message was that playing the Burnout Dominator game might relieve stress and tension in real life.

"We considered the ad's placement on the London Underground meant that it would be viewed by many, including young people.

"We considered that the images of a car that seemed to have crashed at high speed and a burning tyre, together with a reference to violence, could be seen to condone a violent lifestyle, anti-social behaviour or dangerous driving. We concluded that the ad was irresponsible."

This may come as a shock: Jackass: The Game is good.

What is Jackass? The game is based off of the popular MTV franchise, and it captures the spirit of the show's crazy antics through a series of minigames. Yes, it sounds like it belongs on the Wii, but for now it's set for release on PSP and PS2. In a rather unusual move, it appears that the PSP version is the "lead" version of the title, as it features a number of improvements over its console brethren.

Each game is relatively simple, with controls that rarely use more than the analog stick and a single button. In the first few episodes we played, you control a Jackass in a tumultuous drop down a San Francisco street, dance in your undies, catapult yourself across a suburban town, shoot paintballs, and race in a golf car. While some of the games have some irksome controls, each level is enhanced the solid graphics, detailed motion captured animations, voice acting, and irresistible irresponsible charm. There are various goals to achieve in each level, which certainly adds a lot more replay value.

The PSP version that we've been playing has a lot more options than the PS2. Of particular note is its video editor, which allows you to save the replays that you capture in the game. You can add your own camera angles through an easy, intuitive interface. Best of all, you can then upload your creations via Infrastructure and share them with friends. One limitation that we see is the export functionality of the feature: instead of exporting to a PSP-compatible video file (MP4, MJPEG), it exports your replay as a sequence of BMP files. The replays that you can create in Jackass are hilarious ... we hope the team at Red Mile Entertainment tweaks this feature before its guaranteed September release date.

We're really excited about Jackass, and can't wait to play more of the preview build that we have. It's clear that fans of the Jackass series will love the game. However, PSP gamers that are unfamiliar with the show will also want to take note: with easy, accessible gameplay, and exciting Infrastructure functionality, Jackass may just surprise you.

E3 is right around the corner, and Sony's getting the PSP ready for the big show. In a great interview with GameDaily, John Koller, senior marketing manager for PSP, had a couple of key things to say. Of particular note is his response to what he thinks the key titles of PSP later this year:

"There are a number of exclusive titles coming from a third-party perspective, but without getting into all of those since many are unannounced, I think the three big games for PSP are Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron (again, a fantastic game), SOCOM: Tactical Strike (a huge franchise for us on the first-party side) and then God of War."

We're excited as-is by the upcoming PSP library, but to think that even more exclusives are coming is tantalizing. We were surprised by Star Wars Battlefront becoming a PSP-exclusive ... could any more big hitters be coming our way? The very first teaser trailer for the forthcoming Hitman movie has sneaked onto the internet - having watched it, we don't reckon Timothy Olyphant is very convincing as Agent 47, but we suppose it is only a teaser...

If you've been following the updates on this blog over the past month the most obvious change is that Super Smash Bros. is now running well with dynarec enabled, and many graphical glitches have now been resolved. The compatibility fixes were specifically aimed at Super Smash Bros. but may well fix issues with other roms too. Overall SSB is looking and playing much better than it was in R11, but even at 30-40fps it's still not running at fullspeed yet. There are a few graphical issues that still need resolving, but all in all it's starting to feel very playable with frameskip set to 1 or 2.

Goldeneye is also running in R12. Although the intro sequence is running very quickly and with few noticable graphical issues, a lot more work is needed to it running at a playable framerate in-game. I think it's a good start though, and something to get excited about for the future

Otherwise R12 just has a fewm minor compatibility and graphical fixes - there are no optimisations for this build.

303 HEN Noobz Downgrader Guide

Here is a guide for downgrading any current PSP hardware version
(TA-079 - TA-086) from firmware 3.10-3.50 to 1.50.

VERY IMPORTANT:
If you have a TA082+ motherboard and you downgrade to 1.50,
currently you will be unable to upgrade to 3.30+ Sony firmware.
This is due to Sony blocking updates when the PSP has been
modified to run 1.50. There will be an application released
later which will allow users to revert the changes. If you
are using a TA082 motherboard then I would suggest just using
1.50 or OE until an application is released.

IMPORTANT:
The Noobz team is strongly against piracy, and we're not just
saying that to cover our butts. When you pirate games, you're
removing the incentive for game and console makers to continue
making fun things for us to play with. We are releasing this
downgrader because we believe that using your PSP to its full
potential and being able to customize it and run homebrew code
is a fair use right that should be available to everyone.

Instructions
------------
Here are the steps to downgrade any 3.50 PSP to 1.50:

1 - If you have a 3.50 PSP skip to step 6

2 - Download 3.50 update from here:

3 - Unzip and place the file in <pspdrive>:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE

4 - On the PSP, run the 3.50 update from the memory stick under the Game menu.

5 - Delete <pspdrive>:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE

6 - Copy the contents of the folder MS_ROOT from the 3.50 downgrader ZIP to
the memory stick

7 - Unzip the 1.50 update to a temporary folder. Rename the EBOOT.PBP to
UPDATE.PBP and copy it to <pspdrive>:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE/ . DO NOT
OVERWRITE PSP/GAME/UPDATE/EBOOT.PBP!

8 - Load Lumines and press x to start the game

9 - The screen will clear to black and fill with a light blue colour, then
the PSP will reset itself

10 - Check that HEN is running by going to system settings, then to
"System Information" and it should show up as system version
350 HEN

11 - If it is showing up as HEN then go to the memory stick and
run the x.yz update

12 - If you have an unpatched TA-082 or higher motherboard, you will be
prompted to allow the downgrader to patch your motherboard so it
can be safely downgraded. The downgrader will not let you proceed
without patching, if your motherboard requires it.

13 - Before the downgrader does anything to your PSP it will ask
for you to agree to what it is doing, if you no longer want to
continue press the Right Shoulder Button (R-TRIGGER).

14 - Once you have agreed to start the downgrade do not unplug the
PSP, or try and restart it

15 - Once finished the PSP will ask you to press X, and reset itself

16 - If it comes up saying that the settings are corrupt, press x
to continue, this will mean you will need to re-enter the
settings for network connections into your PSP, otherwise go to
step 18

17 - Load the included NetConfigBackup application in your PSP, and select to
restore, this will take the backup that was done of the network config
that was done automatically during the downgrade.

18 - All done now :-) Hopefully you now have a 1.50 PSP. Enjoy it responsibly.


Troubleshooting
---------------
- If when trying to restore the network config using netconf backup you
find that it gives you an error on the downgraded 1.50 PSP, try adding
a temporary network config, then deleting it and run the netconf backup
again.

This downgrader is for v3.50 firmware, and includes a port of the Homebrew ENabler (HEN) for firmware 3.50.

It will automatically detect all known PSP motherboard types, and do the appropriate steps to ensure a safe downgrade.

Before we get started, let's have the obligatory warnings:

Any downgrader carries some risk of permanently damaging your PSP. We've done everything we can to remove as much danger as possible, but if you choose to use this downgrader, you are accepting all of the risk involved. Nobody else will be held responsible for any damage to your PSP, howsoever caused.

Recent Sony official firmwares (3.30 onwards) have included checks that block upgrade from previously-downgraded PSPs with TA-082 or later motherboards. If you use this downgrader on such a PSP, you will lock yourself out of official firmware updates - although you will still be able to use new OE firmwares when they are released. We intend to release a tool to allow a return to official firmwares in the future.

This software is provided free of charge, so that you can use legitimate homebrew on your PSP. You are explicitly prohibited from selling it, or using it to pirate commercial games or applications. If you want to play a commercial game, do the decent thing and support the developers by buying it. If you don't, then YOU are contributing to the death of the PSP software industry.



To use this downgrader, you will need the following:

- A PSP, upgraded to the official Sony v3.50 firmware. You should also set your language settings to "English".

- A legal Lumines UMD, either the EU (ULES00043) or US (ULUS10002) version. The original, Platinum, or Greatest Hits versions are all fine. Support for the Japanese version will come soon.

- Sufficient intelligence and english language skills to be able to carefully and throroughly read the instructions.
It would also help if you've previously run the Illuminati Hello World, so that you're familiar with how to run the Illuminati exploit.

The following video clip is of a supposed v3.50 downgrade in action at a game shop in Shenzen and China who claim they can even softmod PSPs with a firmware version of over v3.10. People are suspecting that this downgrade process is conducted with the Official unbricking battery from Sony. Read more about it here.

Many modern PSP owners do not have homebrew-capable PSP systems. Therefore, when an exploit was found in Lumines that defeats protection in 3.50 firmware, many leaped at an opportunity to purchase the beloved PSP music/puzzle game. Sales on amazon.com have jumped up a whopping 5,900% percent, making it the tenth best selling video game on the retailer's site. Until there's an alternative solution for those clamoring for homebrew on their systems, Lumines looks like it will be experiencing quite an incredible new revival in sales.
