United Kingdom - Call of Duty: World at War takes the top spot for the third week in a row in the UK according to Chart-Track. FIFA 09 and Mario Kart Wii both slip one slot to make way for a two-spot climb by NFS: Undercover.
Guitar Hero: World Tour makes another appearance in the top 10, and bringing in the rear is the debut of Resistance 2, and according to GfK Chart-Track, matches only approximately 66% of the original's launch week.
"Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat, please put a penny in the Gates man's hat…"
Yup, that's right folks. It's time for gaming hardware and software companies and their online and high street retailers to start the traditional pre-Xmas price-cutting game, with some rather spectacular credit-crunch-friendly bargains on offer this year.
TechRadar gave you our definitive guide to getting the best Xbox 360 and Wii bargains this week. And it seems that Sony isn't going to take part in the latest round of price cuts, preferring to wait until Easter 2009 before hacking back the RRP of PS3. (Based on information leaked from an SCEE employee which the company was also quick to deny…)
If you're extra lucky you'll manage to nab a new Jasper-based 360, which means you should no longer have any 'red ring of death' worries as you are thirty hours into Gears 2.
Somewhat strangely, Nintendo seems to be jumping aboard the electronic book bandwagon, releasing a collection of a hundred modern classics on the DS on Boxing Day this year. Funny day to launch what seems to be a perfect stocking filler, but hey, who are we to get all 'marketing made simple' on their Japanese asses?...
U.S. sales of video game hardware, software, and accessories surged 36% in the first half of the year to $8.27 billion. That even outpaces the $6.1 billion grossed over the same period in 2007, which was a record year for the industry.
Analyst also predicts that Wii software will outpace rivals in 2008.
It's common knowledge that Nintendo is the only current platform holder to have made a profit from its hardware from the off, and now a number has been put on that - $6.
A report on Forbes reveals each Wii unit brings in an operating profit of $6 for Nintendo, according to David Gibson, an analyst at Macquarie Securities. By comparison, Sony loses money on each PlayStation sold, while Microsoft is currently able to break even.
It's not really surprising that game sequels sell better than new intellectual properties. Didn't expect it to be this lopsided, though: seven of the eight best-selling games in the past twelve months have been sequels.
ESRB has just done a rating of Rayman 2 revolution and Medal of Honor.
The thing that's special about that is Rayman 2 Revolution. It's a Playstation 2 game. What kinda proofs that Sony is planning on releasing Playstation 2 games on the Playstation store.

PlayStation Blog:
"Hi everyone, in the next PS3 firmware update (v2.53), coming soon, we're improving the way the Flash Player works with the internet browser. In addition to being able to access more sites using Flash, you'll be able to enjoy:
* Full-screen mode playability
* Live movie (using RTMP format) playability
Now it's going to be even easier to enjoy web content on your PS3, in full-screen!"
In a sign that the Xbox 360 might outsell the PlayStation 3 for the third month in a row, Microsoft said it outsold Sony's PlayStation 3 by a three-to-one ratio over the Black Friday shopping weekend.
Holiday sales are critical for video game console makers because they account for the majority of console sales each year.

"I don't like dealing in rumors and we've seen a lot of those types of people come and go now Surfer Girl, Games Blow, Skater Boy and a host of others. But I have word from a pretty damn good source that Uncharted 2 is set to make a playable appearance at GDC 09' coming up and will be officially unveiled by a major publication in December. Also, word has it from ol' buddy that at the VGA's the game will have a new teaser trailer for the game leading inward.
Set in the Snowy Mountains of a yet to be disclosed area, he said Uncharted 2 is going to be 50% uncharted, 25% Cliff Hanger and 25% Metal Gear Solid 4. He's seen it in action and it looks brilliant.
Again, nothing more than that... but it sounds logical. Ol' buddy said it won't be the only game Naughtydog shows off next year, either. Jak perhaps? "
Arne Meyer of Naughty Dog writes: "I have a distinct feeling that many of you might have been expecting that this day would be coming real soon … Today, we're beginning to reveal more about our next project here at Naughty Dog – Uncharted 2: Among Thieves."

GamePro writes: "An enormous fan of the past installments in the Persona franchise, I'll be the first to admit that I was a tad skeptical when I heard that Persona 4 was dropping as soon as the end of 2008. Wrapping up my fourth run-through of Persona 3: FES, I was starting to feel like there wasn't anything else the series could throw at me that I hadn't seen before - and certainly not in such a short time span With the announcement that P4 would also be releasing on the Playstation 2, I couldn't help but worry; would this just be Persona 3 with a fresh coat of paint and a new cast of cookie-cutter characters? I'm happy to report that while Persona 4 does hold quite a few similarities to its predecessor, it proves itself as a brand new experience from the ground up with unprecedented levels of innovation, character, and outright charisma. Persona 4 may very well prove to be the shot in the arm that the RPG genre is in such dire need of."
1UP writes: "For all of the restless hand-wringing over how Japanese role-playing games must evolve from their dusty, dated conventions and myopic cultural perspectives in order to appeal to Western gamers, I think it's telling that one of the most successful recent Eastern RPG exports is also the most unapologetically Japanese. Atlus imports Persona's modern-day Japanese trappings completely intact, requiring Western players to juggle myriad polysyllabic Japanese personal and place names, a host of linguistic honorifics (sure, everyone knows -san, but how about -tan?) an unfamiliar Japanese academic and holiday calendar (when was the last time you celebrated Respect for the Aged Day or lugged your backpack to school on a Saturday?), and plenty of exotic cultural conventions. Oh, and this is all on top of a series in which the protagonists summon "Personas" -- obscure mythological figures from various worldwide religions and folk traditions that take the form of demons -- in order to battle evildoers".
Need for Speed Undercover maybe is not the best racing game but the Japanese distributor is doing a great job with a promotional web game based on Google Maps. The first who will fin a Porsche in the tokyo map will win 1 million yen!
Gamertell writes : "I was into Persona long before it was fashionable - playing the questionable Revelations: Persona and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment years ago while in high school. When Persona 3 came out to critical acclaim, I was pleased that the series was finally receiving mainstream recognition. The release of the fabulous Persona 4 will help solidify the series' rightful place in the RPG world, will help convince players that the success and quality of Persona 3 was not a fluke and provide hours of entertainment for RPG fans who happen to own a PS2. Persona 4 will likely be the last great PS2 RPG - it deserves to be appreciated."

After the insane amounts of free Burnout Paradise DLC that Criterion has released, it's hardly surprising that the developer has decided to get paid for its next batch of downloadable treats.
The upcoming Big Surf Island update for the ball-out racer was previously touted as free content, like previous DLC packages, but Criterion has confirmed that it will instead be "premium paid-for content".
It didn't reveal a price, but to be fair the update looks bloody brilliant so we wouldn't mind handing over a few quid.
Greedy Raven writes, "No, I didn't get lazy here. The first Prince of Persia game on the next generation consoles is the first in the series without a subtitle. To be honest, I doubt it will need one. The series excelled as an action adventure game in the previous generation with little problem at all. The unique game play elements and stories of the past generation always brought something new to the table..."

This holiday weekend the boys discuss what's been fondling their consoles over the break, rant and rave about downloadable games vs. disc-based games and answer some interesting questions from the readers.
LucasArts has been around for over a quarter-century now and in that time they've managed to create some pretty great and some pretty not-so-great games. Curious how that happened? The new book Rogue Leaders: The Story of LucasArts provides a detailed history of the company - along with a lot of pictures for you word-haters out there.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at a recent press event in London, Wheelman creative director Simon Woodroffe revealed that Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto IV has changed what gamers expect from an open world action title.
"Our game was already quite different, but GTA 4 moved the bar in terms of what people expected from an open-world driving game," said Woodroffe. "Before GTA 4, open-world driving games generally had more accessible, more arcade-like, handling. Even the previous GTAs were like that. But GTA IV moved the bar towards realism - even super-realism, you know?
Initially the roster was announced at 20 characters, and this made sense; two from ever title up to Final Fantasy X. However, the announcement of Shantotto completely threw this out of whack and people thought that at least one other character would be joining her, on the Side of Evil. Well, it turns out that those people thought correctly.

Eurogamer writes: "DICE hopes to start an open beta for Battlefield 2 patch 1.5 before Santa stuffs himself down chimneys.
"The beta would be for everyone that wants to install it, the more people that do the better feedback we get and we don't have an update 1.30 again," said a spokesperson for the developer on the official forum (spotted by Blue's News).
"The plan is to get it out before Christmas yes."
There's no specific word on what will be in patch 1.5, although DICE has hinted at server stability and performance tweaks, plus plenty of fresh content."
Rockstar Games is no stranger to Australia's strict videogame classification regime. Even before the company's highly anticipated title Grand Theft Auto IV hit shelves worldwide in April this year, rumours of edits to the Australian Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions began to circulate. Rockstar confirmed the rumours, saying that they had made voluntary content cuts that were "not significant" to the overall product in order to satisfy the guidelines enforced by the local ratings body--the Australian Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC)--which is now called the Classification Board.
Internet Explorer, MSN, Windows, Office. Four of Microsoft's biggest products are under attack. What does this mean for Microsoft and the Xbox 360?
Engadget writes: "Hey you, hot-shot movie cutter! Now that we've got your attention, have a look at this. Adobe's research laboratory has been toiling away with a sophisticated interactive video-object manipulation system, which gives video editors all sorts of creative windows with next to no rendering lag. An After Effects demonstration shows an editor selecting the outside of a cab and typing "taxi" -- once the text is imprinted on the vehicle, it stays on the car as it moves up and down the street. We know, you're totally scratching your head trying to envision what we just said, so why not just head past the break and give it a look?"

"PC gamers know, if you wanna game on a PC, you have to do it on Windows OS. Yes, there are notable exceptions. The different Linux flavors have a number of games that really aren't half bad, and Apple is starting to come around to some serious games. But there are always exceptions to the rule. Because of the iPhone, Apple is rewriting those rules."

Japan - The seismic effects of market shifts and economic gloom in combination with a rather short release list have made a significant impact for Square Enix. In 2007, twenty-two releases spread across five systems (DS, PSP, PS2, Wii, 360) added up to a shockingly huge 6.4 million units sold.
In contrast, Square Enix's 2008 effort of ten releases across four systems (DS, PSP, Wii, 360) resulted in a far lesser 1.7 million units sold.* This is a 4.5 million unit difference and is a eye-popping 73.81% decline from 2007.
