Image: http://img.qj.net/uploads/articles_module/121849/Sony-PSP-side-crop.jpg?619952 Developer J.F. has recently announced the release of a test build of a new Basilisk II port for the Sony (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/sony/880) PSP. Basilisk II, in case you're asking, is an Mac open source emulator (http://www.qj.net/PSP-Basilisk-II-Files-Updated/pg/49/aid/85707) that enables you to emulate the 680x0-based Apple Macintosh computer on your handheld.
J.F. stresses that *this is strictly a test release, and is specifically made for user feedback and to test the emulator's GUI*. The app is currently capable of booting 8.0 CD, and creating and selecting hardfiles.
Those interested in giving this emulator a try will want to access the download link below, though once again, we remind readers that this app is strictly for test purposes only. Those interested in contacting J.F. to provide their feedback can do so via the source link below. In the meantime, here are the rest of the developer's notes for this release:
* Ignore the crappy refresh routines - I'll be replacing them entirely in the next few days. I just used enough of a stretch blit to be able to see something to be certain the emu is running.
* Currently, the analog stick is the mouse, with LTRIGGER/RTRIGGER as the buttons. The d-pad is the cursor keys, and X is ENTER. I'll eventually have denzef keyboard and pspirkeyb support, as well as the ability to remap the buttons when in that mode. As I mentioned, this is just a test.
* You can create and select hardfiles. Boots from hardfile fine, will ask to format blank hardfiles (the ones you create in the GUI).
* You can select a floppy at the start. Boots from it fine. The next step is to make add the ability to change the floppy and cd while in B2. Press SELECT to see the change menu... it doesn't do anything other than show the first cd and floppy in their respective folders right now. Press SEL again to leave the menu.
* The default directory for roms is "roms", the default dir for floppys is "disks" (and floppies should all have an extension of .dsk), the default dir for cdroms is "cdroms", and hardfiles is "hardfiles". It doesn't mean they HAVE to be in those directories, but that is where the file requester will go first.
* I allow three Mac resolutions - 512x384, 640x480, and 768x576. You can select four different depths - 4bit, 8bit, 16bit, and 32bit. At the moment, the video is also hardcoded to only display on the LCD. I'll change that when I change the refresh routines.
* The binary here is currently set for small memory so I could check how it would work on a phat - you can get up to 16M on a phat and 44M on the slim (not with this build - with a build set for large memory).

Image: http://img.qj.net/uploads/articles_module/121838/red-squirrel-ctf-manager-for-windows-banner.jpg?833808
We learn that homebrew developer Red Squirrel (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/red-squirrel/15342) has updated CTF Manager to version 2.0, and with it came support for creating custom theme files for the recently released Custom Firmware 4.01 M33.
This major change is supported with flanking updates of file compatibility with the official CXMB v3.2 and CTF file-naming, such that the homebrew support application is much friendlier.
Other changes include the packaging of the program into a single executable file, the incorporation of security checks to avoid .NET Framework errors (it will also ask you for the PRX files you may extract from via Miriam's CXMB update), plus the ability to automatically recreate the directory structure required by the program to operate.
The application is Windows only, so those with Linux (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/linux/92) boxes might have to roll up their sleeves for Windows XP (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/windows-xp/2368) emulation and utilize the application in a .NET enabled environment. With that said, you may proceed to download the small archive through the link we've provided below. Enjoy.

We have a case of either purely awesome news for the PSP or a lapse in updating on the part of Capcom (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/capcom/107)'s website people. A recent post from Joystiq has us taking notice of a mention of Devil May Cry for the PSP on Capcom's Japanese website.
Here's the thing. As far back as 2005, there were rumblings of a PSP DMC. We even thought that they'd make an announcement for the series at TGS back in 2006 (http://www.qj.net/-Is-Devil-May-Cry-4-Out-To-Possess-The-PSP-/pg/49/aid/64956), but that never really came to pass. Two years later, this pops up, but it could just be an unchanged announcement from way back when.
What's weird, however, is that this site listing keeps getting updated with new Capcom PSP games, but that one notice has never been taken down. Here's to hoping it actually means what we all hope it does: that Dante will be doing crazy killer combos on the PSP.

Image: http://img.qj.net/uploads/articles_module/121806/psp-side.jpg?719208 CXMB developer poisonhzkj (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/poisonhzkj/13136) has cleaned out a few of the bugs spotted by observant users in the most recent CXMB v3.2 release (http://www.qj.net/CXMB-v3-2-out-now-with-4-01-M33-support/pg/49/aid/121752). The developer has now come out with a quick bugfix version that addresses the bugs in CXMB v3.2's random theme function.
Here's CXMB v3.2.1's full changelog:
* Fix bug (freeze while applying theme)
* Fix bug (restore to original official XMB (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/xmb/855) when returns from game)
* make official XMB NOT a choice of random.
As with all previous CXMB releases, *this version includes a bundled readme file. Make sure to read through it before installing this plugin*. If you have any bug reports, drop poisonhzkj a line via the source link below.

Reports are circulating on the Internet revealing that the gaming giant has just been granted a patent (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/patent/2523) by the US Patent & Trademark Office for a handheld that incorporates touchscreen features.
Hmm.. PSP Phone, anyone (http://www.qj.net/Sony-Magazine-cites-PSP-style-phone-in-development/pg/49/aid/113844)? Now, now. We don't want to get you all excited over something that is far from being confirmed yet. But for what it's worth, you're free to speculate on this patent's application. Admit it, after that heartbreaking categorical denial (http://www.qj.net/Sony-categorically-denies-confirmation-of-PSP-phone/pg/49/aid/108335) from Sony last year, that would be sweet if it did turn out to be the PSP Phone, right?
Interesting, isn't it? The documents show ex-Sony exec Phil Harrison (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/phil-harrison/2082) as the inventor for this patent. Now that he's with Infogrames (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/infogrames/8738), it's a wonder if Sony will still push through with this. Frankly, we don't see any reason why not. They have been awarded the rights, after all. Besides, another entry in the handhelds arena won't be so bad, too. Competition always drives ingenuity after all.
Anyways, you might as well stack this news at the back of your head for now, cause patent approvals like this doesn't mean we'd be hearing anything substantial soon. Some even takes years to come to fruition. In the meantime, keep those fingers crossed.

Developer thecobra (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/thecobra/15224), author of the Robot Warriors DC (http://www.qj.net/Robot-Warriors-DC-v0-1-customize-your-robot-and-battle-other-bots/pg/49/aid/119893) and JOKEtopia (http://www.qj.net/JOKEtopia-v0-2-PSP-prank-added/pg/49/aid/114905) programs, has released a new application for the PSP called Change-D. It's a simple prx that lets you switch between games and applications in the VSH by pressing the L button.
The author says that the program is compatible with all custom firmwares. The program has also been quickly updated to be able to swap between 150, 3xx, and 4xx folders. Be sure to read the documentation included in the download for more information.
Here are the developer's notes for Change-D v0.2:
*Installation*
1. First create Two folders in the ms0:/psp/ folder and called them games and apps. transfer all your Games to the games folder and all your applications to the apps folder. then delete the normal game folder( this is important or else the prx wont work) then
2. Just copy CHANGE-D.prx to your SEPLUGINS folder and add the line: ms0:/seplugins/CHANGE-D.prx
3. vsh.txt, enable it in your recovery menu and you are able to use it.
*Usage*
* L Trigger button to switch between games and apps. Everytime you do this you must select the memorycard in one of the other section in vsh and the go back to the memory card in the game section( this is because you need to let the vsh reread the memorycard game section)
* i just update it so it could have 150 and 3xx and 4xx folders available to swap

Image: http://img.qj.net/uploads/articles_module/121758/Sony-PSP_qjgenth.jpg?951633 Developer Dark AleX (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/dark-alex/5160) has announced the release of version 2 of his PspStates homebrew plugin (http://www.qj.net/Dark-AleX-releases-experimental-PspStates-plugin-for-PSP-Slim/pg/49/aid/121712) for the PSP Slim.
In case you weren't around during our earlier report, this homebrew plugin will enable you to create savestates while playing games on your handheld. As for the changes that are implemented with this new build (quoting the readme):
* Fixed important bug in inter-thread code (semaphore wasn't waiting due to interrupts disabled), that caused the load state to not be completely read in some cases. This caused black screen after state load (unless you just saved that state, in this case state was still in ram), or even worse, game not working properly due to partial load.
* Added states per game basis. The controls are slightly different: old controls now do a local savestate/loadstate of the game, while pressing additionally select button will save/load a global state. See instructions for more info.
* Fixed bug that caused normal sleep mode waking up immediately.
* UMD discs and isos in normal UMD mode are now supported. However, they require to nullify umdcache, by flashing one file, read the instructions in the readme.
*We remind the readers that PspStates is still experimental and may cause data loss or other damage to your PSP. You will want to back up your nand (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/nand/792) and memory stick (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/memory-stick/287) data if you're serious about giving this homebrew a try*. You will also need a PSP Slim running on custom firmware 4.01 M33 (http://www.qj.net/Custom-firmware-update-4-01-M33-2-out-now/pg/49/aid/121601).
You will also need a good memory stick as a fake stick will cause extremely slow savestates and loadstates. Lastly, *we advise all users to view the file bundle's readme before attempting to run PspStates even if they've read the one for the previous release, as Dark AleX made some revisions to the readme in version 2*. Those interested in contacting the author to make bug reports or otherwise will want to visit the source link below.

Image: http://img.qj.net/uploads/articles_module/121744/wotlk-bard-03.jpg?679773 Remember last year's big news about Activision and Vivendi forming a merger (http://www.qj.net/Activision-Vivendi-Games-to-merge-into-Activision-Blizzard/pg/49/aid/108854)? While the proposal sounds a financially enticing at US 27.50 per share offer, there are some shareholders who certainly aren't buying into the whole deal and even filed an injunction request in an attempt to halt the merger.
The injunction suit was filed in the Delaware Court of Chancery last February by the Wayne County Employee's Retirement System. For those who aren't too familiar with law parlance (we don't blame you), an injunction is a court order that...yes, blocks a party from doing certain acts. In this case, from Activision (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/activision/179) merging with Vivendi (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/vivendi/3227).
However, Activision has recently issued a statement that the Delaware Court junked the request to stop the merger with Vivendi from happening, and has scheduled a stockholders meeting on July 8, where they will "consider and vote on proposals to approve the transaction." If everything goes as planned in the meeting, Activision and Vivendi will be known collectively as Activision Blizzard (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/activision-blizzard/14851) effective July 9.
So will we see any game tie-ins between Activision and Blizzard (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/blizzard/76) any time soon? How about making the World of Warcraft's Bard class (http://www.qj.net/Blizzard-April-Fools-posts-Molten-Core-for-consoles-WotLK-Bard-hero-class/pg/49/aid/117189) come true?

Sony (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/sony/880) PSP coder slicer4ever (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/slicer4ever/11573) decided to get into ad-hoc development and we're seeing some sweet fruits of labor right here. The simple game Snake was revived and with an ad-hoc twist, slicer4ever decided to simply call it PSPSnake v.1.
The objectives in the game are pretty simple (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Tweexter-v0-1-A-TextTwist-like-game-for-your-PSP/pg/49/aid/121734): eat as much of the onscreen food as you can and get longer. In the process, you have to outfox your opponent into ramming into you. Sounds simple, but it can be pretty addictive (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Mario-Kart-64v1-PSP-Edition/pg/49/aid/121646).
According to slicer4ever, there's no single player mode and when playing with a friend, the server has to be started ahead of the client to play successfully. A couple more releases are planned to shoot bugs and hopefully add new features.
That's about it. Try to find a buddy who'll play with you and download the game from the link below. You can also give slicer4ever feedback via the forum thread linked below. Enjoy!

Welcome to QJ.NET's first-ever Weekend Warrior (http://www.qj.net/QuickJump-QuickPeek-branches-out-introducing-the-Weekend-Warriors/pg/49/aid/121585) article for the Sony (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/sony/880) PlayStation Portable! This week's segment covers a wide range of topics, including some dev updates on Team M33 (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/team-m33/14124)'s latest custom firmware release. Two Japan (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/japan/109) games are also in the spotlight, along with some news on the sales of titles over in Europe.
There's also the matter of Sony's other future plans for the PSP, which will have much to do weaning the PSP of its dependence on your PS3 or your PC for its steady influx of downloadable goodies.
When Sony announces a firmware update for the PSP, you can be sure that the homebrew developers aren't too far behind. Having successfully decrypted Sony's official firmware 4.00 in record time, Team M33 worked overtime on creating their own CFW. Progress comes at a price however, with M33 bidding farewell to a cornerstone of PSP homebrew development.
But lo!, this just in from a couple hours ago! Dark AleX (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/dark-alex/5160) has finally released PSP CFW 4.01 M33 with a promise to follow it up with the 1.50 kernel add-on! Get your CFW update below!

This week also sees the initial public launch of Auraomega's Project4 XMB (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/xmb/855) replacement, lauded to be the first homebrew of its kind. To think that not too long ago, the project was in danger of being axed due to an unfortunate incident with the Dev's PSP. It's been a long difficult road, but now it looks like Auraomega's efforts are finally paying off.

Intrigue dots the gaming side of this week, with Sony Japan recently setting up a countdown timer for a new mystery title. The timer's gone now, and the game appears to be a sequel for the Yuusha no Kuse ni Namaikida RPG. With no indications of an English release, it looks the fans will want to look to their favorite import sites to grab this title upon launch.

Speaking of games, there's also the matter of some new info that's cropped up for Square Enix's Dissida: Final Fantasy, with the game scheduled to arrive in Japan by the end of this year. We got quite a bigger-than-usual dose of updates for Dissidia this week, including a lot of speculation of the character rosters by some of you commenters.
And speaking of Square Enix titles, gamers are going to get some classic treats from the RPG giants. Gamers in Japan, at least. Over at their region's PlayStation Store (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/playstation-store/10699), Xenogears and Einhander are now available. After which, Square Enix promises to deliver more of their PS1 classics online.

On the corporate side of the news, Sony has hinted that they're planning to keep the handheld system in service for ten years. Optimistic? Perhaps, but Kaz Hirai's previous presentation at Sony Global indicates that they've already got some pretty good ideas on how to make this a reality.
Link: *Exec says Sony is shooting for a ten-year lifespan for PSP* (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Exec-says-Sony-is-shooting-for-a-ten-year-lifespan-for-PSP/pg/49/aid/121471)

For now, we'll focus our attention on Sony's long-term plans for the PSP. There's the matter of Sony's previous corporate meeting, which disclosed plans to enable the handheld to directly access the PlayStation Store. Then there's the press wire from the same meeting announcing plans for a PSN-based video download service for the PS3, which in turn may also allow streams to the PSP.
The way it's going, Sony might be presenting the handheld as a multifunctional entertainment system that can do far more than just play games. Of course this is just speculation on my part. If Sony were serious about turning the PSP into the media bonanza we all want it to be, they will want to fix its two biggest hardware-related issues: its paltry memory stick capacity (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Sony-Japan-to-release-2200-mAh-PSP-Slim-battery-with-extra-large-cover/pg/49/aid/113048), and anemic battery life (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Sony-Japan-to-release-2200-mAh-PSP-Slim-battery-with-extra-large-cover/pg/49/aid/113048).

It's finally here! Dark Alex (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/dark-alex/5160) and the rest of Team M33 (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/team-m33/14124) have been popping in and out lately with their messages about creating a new custom firmware (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/custom-firmware/6237). While their previous release had CFW 3.90 (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Dark-AleX-releases-Custom-Firmware-3-90-M33-3-with-improved-NO-UMD-compatibility/pg/49/aid/117055), the release of the official 4.01 FW (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Sony-announces-minor-update-official-PSP-firmware-4-01-Update-/pg/49/aid/121467) prompted them to follow suit with one of their very own.
In comes CFW 4.01 M33 with the following changes:
* Bug fix: vshmenu didn't let change camera mode due to camera_plugin using select button. Fixed, now vsh menu will not be loaded when using the camera.
* Recovery can now be translated, See how below. Translation to spanish is autoincluded.
* Updated the M33 SDK (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/sdk/9913) with a new function and sample, and released the psp-packer tool to compress prx's and PBP's in the PSP format.
* The folder of 4.01 and highre homebrew will be GAME4XX so it won't need change on update.
*Make sure you take a look at the readme for installation procedures and other notes form Dark AleX and Team M33*. The team also notes that the 1.50 kernel add-on will be released in a few hours, so make sure you check back on that. In the mean time, update your CFW!
Thanks to hellfire and MahSixFo for the tip!

Here's a homebrew game (http://pspupdates.qj.net/category/Homebrew-Games/cid/62) from French developers HydreEd (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/hydreed/15634) and HTTONY (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/httony/15635), Baby Foot. It's a sort of foozball game designed for your PSP.
This is coded in lua (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/lua/25) and here, you play against an AI, so you better get those sporty gloves knockin' so you won't be embarrassingly smacked by the computer. It's not yet in its final versions, and there have been some issues found, such as the "collisions between players and the balloon are not perfect." The authors are currently working on that problem so we're sure this won't be the only time we'll hear from Baby Foot.
In fact, they've already outlined the things you'll be seeing in the following versions:
* shootings
* destruction of targets (mini-plays)
* addition of sound effects
* addition of music
Anyway, you can check out the source link below for more details, and we suggest you have a handy translator with you cos it's in French. I must admit I personally had quite a difficult time finding a decent translation for this brew coverage.
Good luck and enjoy!

Gamers in Japan (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/japan/109) got an eyeful of Final Fantasy overload as Square Enix (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/square-enix/281) released a new trailer for Dissidia: Final Fantasy (http://pspupdates.qj.net/category/Dissidia-Final-Fantasy/cid/3836). The familiar cast of heroes and villains all make a comeback on this PlayStation Portable fighting game, with a lot of hardcore cinematic and in-game action to hype up the latest Final Fantasy title.
While the new trailer doesn't explain some minor plot issues, like why Sephiroth always appears in front of a flaming backdrop or why the villains decided to band together in the first place, it does show off a lot of flashy cinematics between our favorite Final Fantasy characters (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Square-Enix-includes-Tidus-in-Final-Fantasy-Dissidia-roster/pg/49/aid/110190).
Here's the real kicker behind the new trailer: the end of video confirms the Japanese release date of the game by the end of the year. While there's been no word of when Dissidia: Final Fantasy will be released in North America (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/north-america/2901), we're pretty sure it won't be very far behind.
Anyway, we won't keep you from watching the trailer any longer. We hope you enjoy this Final Fantasy crossover of epic proportions.

Mp3 ME Player v1.01 provides for some cool additions such as four new player modes: Single, Sequential, Random, Repeat. Apart from this, he's also put in a nifty volume/track control via the analog nub. He's also changed Start to Toggle USB, and the Default CPU from 80MHz to 37MHz.

Image: http://img.qj.net/uploads/articles_module/121511/Lockdown_qjgenth.jpg?644089 Developer Torch dropped us a line earlier to announce the release of Lockdown v3.0. For those asking, Lockdown is a homebrew application that enables you to password-protect your PSP (http://www.qj.net/PSP-Homebrew-Lockdown-v2-0-update-/pg/49/aid/120873).
This app also protects your handheld's Recovery Menu, ensuring that gaining access to it is anything but easy. This new build will feature improved memory usage and will now enable its users to customize its GUI.
Lockdown v3.0 was tested on a PSP Slim running on CFW 3.90M33-3 and should also work on the PSP Phat. Those interested in downloading this homebrew will want to access the file bundle's readme for proper installation and usage details.
*Loading this app will involve accessing your PSP's flash0, which may lead to bricking if you're not careful*. Those interested leaving their feedback regarding Lockdown will want to visit Torch's release thread at the QJ.NET PSP Development Forum.

New additions include Story, Character and Info sections.
The Character section contains basic info on some of the game's confirmed fighters. These include the Warrior of Light and Garland from Final Fantasy, Frioniel (Firion for all you purists) and Emperor Mateus from Final Fantasy 2, Squall Leonhart and Ultimecia from Final Fantasy 8, and Final Fantasy 9's Zidane and Kuja.
Artwork found on the members-only section of the Japanese Square Enix site suggest that character info for Jecht and Tidus from Final Fantasy 10 (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Tidus-and-Jecht-make-their-way-into-Dissidia-Final-Fantasy/pg/49/aid/121046) will be on the next update. That's the image to the right, courtesy of NeoGAF member jiggle.
Hopefully the next update will also reveal the other members of the game's playable cast. I'm personally looking forward to the representatives for Final Fantasy 6. Keep checking back here for more news.

Though there was no changelog in a strict sense, he did say that bug fixes have been applied in this version.
Here's the short text that the developer posted in his release:
I've fixed most of the bugs that I could find in the 3.x build of DOSBox (at least with the fat psp). Now you should be able to exit and set any about of memory in the conf file as long as it can be allocated with malloc (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/malloc/7379). Also, with a pair of prx's it has the same functionality as the 1.5 build. Neither prx is necessary to run the program.
The download link is right below. Just make sure you've got the installation process locked down from previous reads (http://pspupdates.qj.net/DOSBox-v0-71-Build-02-01-2008/pg/49/aid/110960) on this application. Enjoy the vintage OS experience!

Last week saw the launch of Secret Agent Clank (http://pspupdates.qj.net/category/Secret-Agent-Clank/cid/4418), the latest in the Ratchet & Clank series of games. High Impact Games (http://pspupdates.qj.net/tags/high-impact-games/11680) has taken some bold steps with this release, with the introduction of several game innovations that would look right at home in a Bond film.
So, is agent Clank's latest adventure really all that and more? We won't spoil it just yet, but you're welcome to read through our blow-by-blow review, available for your eyes only below.
*Clank. Agent Clank.*
Perhaps the biggest innovation Secret Agent Clank offers to the Ratchet & Clank franchise is its focus on stealth rather than combat. Much like another well-dressed operative you may know, Clank will have to do much of his work in the shadows, which leads to some interesting new gameplay elements.
For starters, you're given several means of sneaking about. One way involves keeping out of sight, and using several indicated hiding spots as you attempt to clear a room. The other way, which becomes available when you get the Holomonocle, is to disguise yourself as one of the goons. Speaking of stealth, we'll be moving on to the next portion - assassinations.

If you sneak up behind a guard, you'll be prompted to activate a four-button sequence to take them out. Pulling this off successfully treats you to an amusing combo animation, aside from keep your presence from the sentries incognito.
Foul it up, however, and not only will the guard see you, but he'll most likely alert his buddies. Sure, you can opt to go Rambo, but given the number of enemies you tend to encounter when you raise the alarm, you risk running out of ammo, walking away badly beaten, or dead.
Clank's mission eventually transition into two distinct portions: The Gadgetbots, and a rhythm-and-action segment. The Gadgetbot side-quests tie in directly with Clank's current predicament, and consists mostly of puzzle-based challenges wherein you free Clank from a vault, or protect him from traps.
The rhythm portion, as you've guessed, will have you inputting button commands according to a set tempo. Not entirely original, but the sort of moves Clank pulls off on a successful run are certainly worth the effort. The ballroom dance scene alone is to die for.

*
Ratchet's doing hard time for attempting to steal the Eye of Infinity, and it's about to get harder. The prison he's been shipped off to also happens to hold the goons and thugs he put away from the past games and needless to say, they would love to return the favor, albeit terminally.
So, what's an ex-galactic hero to do in such a hairy predicament? Easy - blast your way to survival. Ratchet's segment reprises the tried-and-true gameplay of the Ratchet & Clank franchise where your goal is to pull out your favorite big gun, and mow down any hostiles that come your way with a steady stream of explosions and bullets. For the record, my favored weapon is the mine launcher.
Upon completing each of his stages, you'll also get the option of replaying the scenario under different rules. For example, a battle in the prison showers requires that you keep a frequently towel-less Ratchet from getting his picture taken by one of several cameras floating in the area. Strategically placed censor bars ensure that it doesn't get too obscene, aside from adding more flavor to the humor.
Aside from occasional gems like that, however, most of these battles tend to devolve into pretty mundane slug fests. Regardless, Ratchet's prison fights are one of the best ways for you to earn bolts. And to blow stuff up.

*Qwark*: *Tall-tales-R -Us*
For his part, Qwark's been commissioned by an unknown third-party to write his autobiography. And blow hot air he does - his segment consists of you re-living his past battles, which range from giant mechanical Godzilla-like monsters to a totally random stage production... with lemurs.
Actual gameplay-wise, Qwark's bouts are best described as Ratchet "Lite." His segment plays out similarly to the Lombax's prison, save that you're stuck to just one blaster and the occasional power-ups. Said power-ups range from vacuum cleaners, heat vision, to giant animal-shaped sponges, so while Qwark's lacking in the hardware department, you can at least look forward to some very amusing ways of offing the opposition.
*The Highs:
*
Secret Agent Clank's humor is definitely a big plus, thanks in part to Clank's trademark dry wit. Qwark steals the show to a certain extent with his crazy ad-lib biography, although his lackluster gameplay crippled what could have been an utterly hilarious ordeal.
Clank's weapons are another crowd-pleaser. I especially like the way they broke away from the franchise's "big guns" approach, instead opting to give us something more discreet without sacrificing functionality.
For example, the Tie-A-Rang is not only your primary long-range weapon and fashion accessory, but is also a tool for cutting down cables, either to lower a bridge, or to drop something really heavy on an unsuspecting foe.
One other weapon I've come to like is the Tanglevine Carnation, a seemingly harmless corsage that creates a vicious man-eating plant when it's dropped on the ground. Sure, the Cuff Link bombs do more damage, but you can't beat the sight of a giant toothed flower that suddenly pops out of the ground and swallows your adversary whole.

*The Lows:*
All that said and done, you'd think that Secret Agent Clank would have made made its mark as another hard-hitting title in the Ratchet & Clank franchise. Unfortunately this isn't the case.
For one, the stealth segment of the gameplay just doesn't deem quite as rewarding as it was intended to be. Sure, sneaking about is fun and all, but honestly, I was more concerned with trying to save up bolts for my next weapon purchase/upgrade. I quickly realized that this was much easier to do if I just let myself get spotted, and wiped out the ensuing mob that appeared.
Another problem I've encountered were those pre-fab attack sequences. Maybe it's just me, but there are times I wished that instead of being just a spectator, the devs could have instead let me activate those attacks one move at a time, on command. Anybody who's played God of War (http://pspupdates.qj.net/category/God-of-War-Chains-of-Olympus/cid/3630) will know what I'm talking about. Same goes for the rhythm segments
In general, Secret Agent Clank's biggest problem was the way its challenges and gameplay aspects just didn't seem to fit in. Rather than one cohesive game, it felt like I was playing through an amalgamation of ideas, each not quite sure of how it was supposed to interlace with the one next to it. For one, the way the game suddenly transitions from Clank's plot to either Ratchet's or Qwark's has a way of breaking up the pacing.
We appreciate that High Impact's effort at trying to introduce some fresh ideas like the stealth action into the series, but from the way it turned out, this title could have used just a bit more polishing to allow its elements to effectively follow through.
*The Verdict:
*
"Jack of all trades but the master of none" best describes Secret Agent Clank. It could have been better if its individual elements were tied neatly together, and perhaps made a tad longer. It's still loads of fun despite these shortcoming
