The newly released Final Cut Express 4 addresses two big events directly: the shift to camcorders that record to high-capacity memory cards, mini-DVDs, or built-in hard disks, and this summer's release of iMovie '08. Jeff Carlson takes a first look at the video-editing app and finds more than just an alternative to iMovie '08 but a missing next step that restores the control enjoyed by iMovie HD users.

File this one in the "life imitating art" department ... or maybe in the "art predicting guerrilla marketing?" department. Max Barry's book
Jennifer Government revolves partially around a Nike marketing plan to shoot the first ten buyers of a new shoe in an effort to build hype and street cred for the launch. Today, Barry
posted on his blog about the similarities between his book's plot and the
recent violence surrounding the launch of the PS3.
Could the muggings and robberies surrounding Sony's new system be a carefully orchestrated marketing ploy to increase exposure for the PS3? Barry stops short of making such a serious accusation. "That would be unspeakably immoral," he said. "To rip off the opening of
Jennifer Government so blatantly, I mean."
We have to agree -- while Sony 's PS3 marketing has occasionally been
disturbing, you have to admit that it's also been pretty original.

"It's Friday and we're all still reeling from the news that NPD numbers won't be gracing us in the weeks ahead, but as the latest issue of EGM falls into subscriber hands, the Quartermann's able to bring you the latest rumors. And lest we forget, Quartermann was right on the money about Bionic Commando.
This month, an old rumor resurfaces in a new form, as BioShock is apparently back on for PlayStation 3. Previously, it'd been speculated that Microsoft tied up 2K Games' aquatic adventure as an exclusive, but there's a change in the tide, as the world rapture may be Cell-enabled in 2008, after all."
Geoff Keighley was lucky enough to spend some man-to-man time with German director Uwe Boll in the latest Bonus Round. In the second part, Geoff tackles the tough questions with Boll. Does Uwe understand the criticism of his work? Is this stuff getting any better? Uwe thinks so. In fact, he goes far enough to compare his movie adaptation of Postal to comedy classics like Monty Python's The Life of Brian and The Naked Gun.

It may be a sad state of affairs but, the fact is, it's tough for an
electronic nose to stand out from the pack these days. This latest effort from some researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology looks to have quite a bit going for it, however, including a collection of eight different types of sensors and 16 "microheaters," which can be tweaked ever so slightly to effectively create 5,600 virtual sensors or, as the researchers helpfully describe, the "analytical equivalent of a snoot full of sensory neurons." That, the researchers say, could let the "nose" sniff out everything from nerve agents and environmental contaminants to trace indicators of disease -- assuming it ever gets out of the lab, that is, which is something the researchers aren't making any promises about just yet.

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Have you heard that I was in Prague last...

MUSCLE (Multi User Server Client Linking
Environment) is an N-way messaging server and
networking API. It includes client-side networking
APIs for various languages, including C, C++, C#,
Delphi, Java, and Python. MUSCLE lets programs
communicate over a network via streams of
serialized Message objects. The included server
program ("muscled") lets its clients message each
other and store information in its server-side
hierarchical database. The database supports
flexible queries via hierarchical wildcarding, and
"live" updates via a subscription mechanism.

Changes:
This release adds Bryan Varner's MicroMUSCLE port, a minimalist version of the Java classes that is compatible with J2ME. The StdinDataIO class now works under Windows. The APIs have been cleaned up some more, changing (const char *) to (const String &) where appropriate. Several HANDLE leaks under Windows were fixed, as well as various other minor bugs.

The Sci Fi Channel is airing a special on Mass Effect starting on Nov. 20 and running through Nov. 25, according to their site. If this whole 3-D thing really takes off (and I mean really takes off), it won't be too long before every other film tests out the format. While I have yet to try out the whole IMAX 3-D experience (except for one of those 25-minute Discover Mars films) myself, it seems to be gaining in popularity big time. Personally, after a half-hour in that theater, my head hurt and I was consistently nauseous (I'm a big silly wimp, I know), so the chances aren't very good that I'll slide into an IMAX theater to see one of the following two films (who, might I add, have just announced that they're going IMAX).
Beowulf marks Robert Zemeckis' third film to go the 3-D route, as the digitally enhanced live-action flick is set to bow in 1000 conventional theaters and an assortment of 3-D theaters (an official deal with IMAX has not been reached yet, but is expected) on November 16. Beowulf follows in the footsteps of previous Zemeckis-related films Monster House and The Polar Express. Pic, which was written by Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary, revolves around the epic poem and stars Angelina Jolie, Ray Winstone, Crispin Glover and Anthony Hopkins.
While it won't be shown in 3-D, the upcoming Night at the Museum will also bow in conventional and IMAX theaters on December 22, taking advantage of the assortment of IMAX theaters located within museums. Ya know, so this way you can see a movie that takes place in a museum, well, in a museum. Trust us, people will think you're cool for doing this. I sure will! Museum stars Ben Stiller as an unlucky night watchman at the Museum of Natural History who unfortunately has to deal with the fact that the entire place comes to life as soon as the doors close for the night. Ugh, that's a drag.

A few months ago, the gaming community had its mind set that this generation is the end of 3rd party exclusives, and there will be a big push towards multiplatform. Over the past year, there were a lot of multiplatform games released from the older Oblivion, to the more contemporary Call of Duty, and to the more recent Bioshock.
There seems to be an agreement amongst gamers that the Xbox 360 always had the better version of the game because it's easier to program for, and of course sometimes that is true, but I also picked the above 3 examples to illustrate the point that sometimes the sheep mentality can be quite deceiving. The PlayStation 3 version is not "always" the worst one, and sometimes it may even be the prefer version due to the free cost of PSN or the addition of Trophy (if you prefer it over the Achievement system on your Xbox 360). Or even better graphics (Oblivion), or extra contents (Bioshock/Eternal Sonata). Of course, some of these games are late to the table and I will not argue with you that if you had both machines you would have probably already played Bioshock. But setting these matters aside there is something else worth discussing today...
