You know vocalist Mark Lanegan from '90s Seattle heavyweights Screaming Trees. You know cellist/keyboardist/vocalist Isobel Campell from her work with Scotland's Belle & Sebastian. But did you know that Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan have recorded two albums of duets together? Sophomore effort Sunday at Devil Dirt is a light and brooding marathon of acoustic folk ballads, simmering light blues, classic country and western, and mild Portishead atmospherics (just listen to "Come On Over [Turn Me On]").
Much of the time Lanegan does a nearly spot on Leonard Cohen, and occasionally his gravelly pipes move into Tom Waits-territory on the muscular "Back Burner," as Campbell fights for space with her lilting voice. She does however shine on a solo spot during the Mississippi Delta Blues acoustic number "Shot Gun Blues," showcasing her sultriness. Two-and-a-half minutes of Johnny Cash-style country is even heard on "Keep me in Mind Sweetheart." A little backbone comes with a

The MousEX Glider pad is weird in the sense that most people wouldn't come up with a pad you rest your mouse on that you slide around with your hand. Why would anybody do this?
Because that same pad holds different add-ons like a navigational wheel, a giant button, or an 18-button pad that you can program macros onto. We're not sold on the concept, especially since placing your hand flat on a pad and sliding it around is way less ergonomic than using a mouse. However, we love programmable macro buttons dogs love peeing in the grass, so we're willing to give this a shot. [MousEX]

About 25 percent of software development projects within IBM are now employing some manner of "agile" methodology, a company official said Monday.

"This is not a fashion trend," said Sue McKinney, vice president of strategy, integration, and development transformation, IBM Software Group. "We believe this is going to be the way we develop software."
The agile approach differs from traditional waterfall-style development, where a project begins with a set of requirements and proceeds sequentially through various stages, such as design, implementation, and testing.
Agile instead sees programmers completing multiple "iterations" of a project within discrete chunks of time, such as once per month. This system theoretically allows application requirements to be tweaked along the way and provides business-side users or clients greater input into the final result.
But IBM's sheer size means a top-down mandate to adopt agile practices won't work, according to McKinney. "You can't be too dictatorial or say one size fits all," she said.
McKinney, a 23-year IBM veteran, has faced some resistance. "We'd bring some of the legacy guys in, and they'd say, 'My release takes three years. This is a bunch of bunk,'" she said. Certain projects may in fact require multiyear gaps between ship dates, but agile development presents an opportunity for more customer involvement and additional beta releases along the way, she said.
Another challenge lies in applying agile broadly within the huge programming teams that produce IBM's major product lines, such as Websphere. "Agile really works well within small- and medium-sized teams. The question is, how do you scale it?" she said.
IBM's Jazz project, a collaborative development platform, is attempting to tackle that question.
It is unclear when IBM will see truly widespread use of agile, but McKinney asserted that tangible progress has already been made. "It's not like a foreign concept when I talk about it anymore," she said.
IBM is logically pursuing this direction, according to James Governor, an analyst with Redmonk. "Waterfall has demonstrably failed," he said. "It has failed to deliver on its promise. Requirements always change on an ongoing basis. If you don't give users input early on in the process, you end up giving them something they didn't ask for.
"IBM is by no means alone in acknowledging there are some drawbacks to this methodology they previously used," Governor added. "We've seen vendors using agile. Now we may be seeing the second stage, where they're marketing their use of it."

Let us give credit where credit is due. Despite the
foolish things we've seen at retail stores where managers treated people
inhumanely for their pathetic amusement, there were some stores that did things right. The Landmark Center Best Buy in Boston was one of the
rumored sites of a PS3 midnight launch -- which ended up being true. Starting Wednesday people began camping out for the following evening's midnight event. It could have all gone bad, but thankfully there was some basic intelligence at work.
Witnesses say at 11PM the night before launch, the general manager of the Best Buy walked over to the already formed line and told them he didn't care what system they used to organize, but to figure something out. That's when the people waiting came up with a list and began doing roll call every hour. If a name was called and the person didn't answer, they were off the list.
In the morning a crowd had formed. Although there was confusion, the manager did take the list from the hopefuls who had spent the evening and pocketed it. The original intention was to begin lining people up at noon. The crowd clearly made that situation impossible now. By noon the police had begun showing up and the store was aware that they only had 40 of the expected 138 units on-hand. By 3PM the midnight launch was officially called off. The crowd had become unmanageable and there clearly weren't enough systems. The manager took the list which he had pocketed and began reading off names. People came up, showed ID, went inside and gave their phone number, paid and got a ticket to return the following day when the store opened. The remaining expected units were then raffled off. By the following morning, the other 98 units arrived, and launch went as well as could be expected. Kudos to those who saw a bad situation in the works and at least did something to fix it.
Know any other stores that deserve a shout-out for keeping things in control?

Chris Morris over at CNN/Money explores availability, mass advertising, limited launch titles, and PS3 vs. Wii predictions as the two consoles prepare for launch next week in the US. While Sony's extremely limited number of PS3 launch units is known (400k), Nintendo's exact November 19 numbers are unknown. THQ president Brian Farrel predicts Ninty will have between 600,000 to 800,000 units available on launch day, "enough to keep the flow coming." The article expects Wii restocking to happen before Black Friday but has no idea when a PS3 restock will hit because Sony isn't sharing much information at the moment.
Regarding a lack of mass advertising, Morris and Nintendo President Reggie Fils-Aime remind us that launches are all for hard-cores who don't need company sponsored promotions. "The advertising and marketing is for casual gamers. We want to get them excited when they can actually go out and get something, so we'll start next week," said Fils-Aime.
The column also touches on the question that "doesn't matter, but everyone likes to talk about:" Who's going to win? The prediction? No definitive manufacturer winner in terms of market share. Only gamers win as the playing field is expected to be a lot more even this time.

Citing growing consumer interest beyond the traditional audience, video game retailer GameStop has announced its top picks for the upcoming holiday season among some 500 titles, sorting audience by area of interest, in a move aimed at simplifying the gift-giving process for a new crop of game purchasers.
For "The Music Enthusiast," GameStop recommends both Activision's Guitar Hero III and MTV Games' Rock Band, declining to back either horse in one of the biggest races of the year's end. For "The Academic Gamer," GameStop's picks among brain training titles are Brain Age, Picross amd My Spanish Coach.
Sidestepping the word "hardcore," GameStop also made recommendations for what it calls "The Avid Gamer," recommending both anticipated and current titles including Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Bioshock, Crysis, Half-Life 2: The Orange Box, and Unreal Tournament III. The retailer did note that these are all Mature-rated games appropriate for the 17-and-older set.

VB: Mainstream movie reviewers, including the legendary Roger Ebert, are starting to rally around Blu-ray Disc.
The format has long had support from tech fans, but up until now, it has not played a big factor in movie reviews. But the recent Blu-ray releases of the Godfather trilogy and world documentary Baraka have so inspired critics that many are telling readers that now is the time to purchase Blu-ray players.
That attention to detail had Ebert glowing in his Oct. 16 review that "Baraka by itself is sufficient reason to acquire a Blu-ray player." He describes various scenes giddily, such as "the indescribable beauty of the aborigines" and "the sad poetic beauty in slow motion of a chain of explosions for a strip mine."
The San Francisco Examiner took a shine to Baraka as well declaring, "Anyone who dug Discovery Channel's Planet Earth series, especially on Blu-ray, will totally fall in love with this flick."
Critics feel much the same way about Paramount Home Entertainment's Sept. 23 Godfather release, which features all three films.
It'll be in theaters before you know it

One of the most intense football rivalries takes place in pixelated form. In the home dressing room sits the FIFA series, produced by American developer EA (Electronic Arts). In the away dressing room you'll find the underdog, Winning Eleven, better known in Europe as Pro Evolution Soccer, or PES. Both games are hugely popular and both attract fiercely loyal fans. It's rare to meet a gamer who plays both games - playing both FIFA and PES would be like supporting Manchester United and Liverpool.
The rivalry is defined by one familiar parameter: style versus substance.
