Hoping to improve its ability to preserve and catalog the burgeoning amount of material on 0digital media, the Library of Congress has announced eight partnerships with organizations to establish digital format standards for photos, films, music and video games.
Despite the swell in materials being produced digitally in Hollywood and in the recording and news industries, sufficient standardization for the production or post-production of new digital materials is still lacking, according to library. And without standards regarding metadata -- information about the characteristics of a piece of work -- for the digital documents library, officials say it will be more difficult to care for and chronicle the digital works.
The new project, the Preserving Creative America initiative, part of the library’s National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program, is an opportunity for industry and libraries to develop the needed standards cooperatively, said Elizabeth Dulabahn, the project’s manager...
Just when the concept album seemed a fossil of happier, proggier times, K Records' Mirah teams up with Lori Goldston and Kyle Hanson of Spectratone International for Share This Place, a song cycle about insects. Disarm your preciousness alarms for a minute and hear us out. This is a hushed, thoughtful and altogether lovely album. Each track evokes particular insects, from dung beetles to caterpillars, transforming their life cycles into delicate dramas set to chamber-pop arrangements.
The concept definitely holds everything together, but it isn't so central that you can't enjoy these exquisite songs on their own. Share This Place rewards patience and attention with layers of complexity. Mirah's songwriting is breathtaking here, making even obscure aspects of biology seem beautiful—when was the last time you heard someone rhyme "proboscis" and make it work? For their part, Goldston and Hanson supply gentle strings, upright bass, violin and many stranger

As was confirmed some time ago, the PS3 will be receiving a Collector's Edition version of action shooter Stranglehold this Fall.
Packaged with the standard game, we'll also get behind the scenes footage and the full Hard Boiled movie, directed by John Woo.

The Xbox 360 will also be getting a special package, but it will only contain the behind-the-scenes footage.

(InfoWorld) - Sprint Nextel and Clearwire have entered an agreement to jointly build the first nationwide WiMax network in the U.S., the two companies announced Thursday.

The vendors will work together on the WiMax network and expect to offer service to a broad range of users, including the U.S. government, public safety agencies, businesses, and consumers, they said.
The two companies plan to reach 100 million U.S customers by the end of 2008, said Gary Forsee, Sprint Nextel chairman and CEO, during a press conference. The WiMax network, which will be marketed under a common brand, will compete with and compliment existing broadband services, he said.
The deal "will fundamentally change the communications landscape in this country," added Ben Wolff, Clearwire CEO. "By working together, a nationwide network becomes possible."
Sprint Nextel will build out about 65 percent of the network, and Clearwire will build out the remaining 35 percent, the companies said. The agreement still needs to be finalized, and it will be subject to regulatory approval by the U.S. Department of Justice and spectrum transfers from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission.
Sprint Nextel will focus on geographic areas covering approximately 185 million people, including 75 percent of the people located in the 50 largest U.S. markets, while Clearwire will concentrate on areas covering approximately 115 million people.
A year ago, Sprint Nextel announced its plans for a nationwide WiMax network. The partnership with Clearwire allows Sprint Nextel to invest less money to create a nationwide network, Forsee said. The agreement will also allow the two companies to provide customers with "more breadth and depth of support," he added.
The partners said the wireless network will provide broadband-speed Internet access to customers. The agreement will enable "seamless" roaming across the network, Forsee said. WiMax is designed to operate more than five times faster than current third-generation wireless networks.
The arrangement will allow the exchange of spectrum between Sprint Nextel and Clearwire to enable each company to build out its portion of the network and to enhance service in its buildout territory, the companies said. Clearwire will be able to use some of Sprint Nextel's wireless infrastructure.
The initial term of the arrangement is 20 years, with three 10-year renewal periods.

Sony PlayStation or Sega Dreamcast? Was that even a real choice? PlayStation 2 or Microsoft Xbox? Again, that was a no-brainer wasn't it?
But PlayStation 3 v Nintendo Wii v Xbox 360? Now there's a tough one for you. It's a case of unbridled future-proof power and dynamism, versus pure no-holds-barred family fun, versus sheer power and a plethora of fantastic games. So which one to choose?
UKResistance has published some hardcore statistics relating to the sales of videogame hardware in the UK. The figures show the immense growth that the UK games industry has experienced, but interestingly the Xbox 360 clearly leads the home console market this year with 3.14 million units sold in comparison to 1.57 million for the Wii (limited by supply perhaps) and 930,000 for the PS3.

Don't expect to see many American Indians, either, or Hispanics. You'll find a fair number of blacks.
"They're not so bad," University of Illinois Professor Dmitri Williams said recently. "How they're represented is lousy. But at least they showed up."
Blacks tend to be portrayed as athletes ? think the "Madden Football," series, video gamedom's top seller ? or criminals ? as in "Grand Theft Auto," among others.
"If you took out the athletes and the criminals, the black population (in games) would be cut in half," said Williams, a UI speech communication professor who studies the social impact of new technologies and has a special interest in video games.

As a high-octane action film starring Bruce Willis, Live Free or Die Hard is really quite spectacular -- what with its larger-than-life effects and nonsensical stunt maneuvers. But we're supposed to believe this is the next installment in the Die Hard franchise, and not "just another summer action flick." So when Detective John McClane leaps out of a squad car going 40mph, sending it up a concrete divider and into a conveniently-placed helicopter, you have to ask yourself this: Am I here for the popcorn action or am I here to spend two hours with one of my all-time favorite movie characters? If it's the latter, then you might find yourself slightly disappointed -- this isn't the same John McClane who woke up next to an unfinished cocktail and an empty bottle of aspirin. This is John McClane after he woke up next to an assortment of summer superhero flicks, chock-full of just enough explosive set pieces to make it worth your money.
If there's a Suspension of Disbelief machine currently on sale at your local Best Buy, then I suggest picking one up before heading to the movie theater. The first major difference between this Die Hard film versus the previous three is not the concept, but the execution. A group of clean-cut hackers hijack this country's most important support systems in an attempt to shut it all down while causing mass chaos. I can buy that. A jet hovering three feet above an active freeway? The fact that John McClane somehow has 47 lives when the rest of us get just one? Timothy Olyphant as a believable Die Hard villain? Kevin Smith's laughable role in the film (watching him try not to curse was almost as painful as watching him try not to act)? And McClane's daughter taking down a guy larger than three trees combined? This is Die Hard on steroids; jacked up to a level where it still looks familiar, except it's now capable of splitting you in two with its pinkie finger. But while it might hurt those expecting the punch, others will walk away not knowing what just hit them.
