Though I still find SNL to be at a low point in its career — save the Digital Shorts — the late night series does strike gold when it figures a way to spoof major franchises and the nerds who watch them.
2008 can not get here soon enough...no offense 2007, we're just excited!

The young actor admits he was extremely nervous about baring all onstage and felt sure Oldman's experience could help him.

There's been a lot of guitar gaming related news lately for some reason, starting with the spotting of a wired version of the Rock Band virtual guitar. Joystiq speculates that this could mean a cheaper guitar for the Xbox 360 version of the game, but then again they've been playing a lot of Rock Band lately so the rockin' out may be affecting their minds. The second tidbit of news comes from the ever informant
FCC, which has just taken a look at the Guitar Hero III Les Paul. We've seen
this particular model before a couple of times -- albeit without the black lick of paint -- so it's not a great surprise to see this hanging around at the Federal Comm' Comm'. A much bigger surprise is the fact that the FCC shots don't include blurred pictures of the approval team (and cameraman) rocking out: an FCC tester position evidently ≠ a rockstar lifestyle. You can also see hands-on with both Guitar Hero III and Rock Band over at Joystiq.

With filming on The Dark Knight under way, you should expect plenty of eyewitness spy reports to start popping up online. Today, there's word of scenes involving almost all the film's major characters, including The Joker and Harvey Dent. A scooper for JoBlo.com witnessed a key scene being filmed in Chicago. Here's a taste of what they had to say (beware of spoilers): "The scene is a fundraiser for Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) and it was in the lobby for either a hotel of some sort or of Bruce Wayne's mansion. First part of the night was Eckhart coming in from an elevator and making his entrance. Michael Caine was there and filming his shot for a good three hours. After that was done, then it was Batman's turn. He came in out of a helicopter with a hot model on each side, he truly knows how to make an entrance. But the big news is THE JOKER IS CRASHING THE (expletive) FUNDRAISER. Yessireebob, you read that correctly. He is going to make an entrance (hopefully involving the breaking of a window or two) and 'crash' the party." JoBlo.com also had a follow-up on another scene involving the filming a political ad for Harvey Dent where the Joker and his goons stage a surprise attack (Heath Ledger's Joker even reportedly starting smacking extras!). Batman and Rachel Dawes were also on hand for the scene. Batman-on-Film.com claims that Bruce Wayne and Alfred will live in a downtown Gotham penthouse in The Dark Knight while Wayne Manor is being rebuilt following the fire seen in Batman Begins. Comics fans may recall that during the 1970s Bruce and Alfred lived briefly in a penthouse above Wayne Enterprises. BoF even had video footage from the penthouse shoot in Chicago, which is a scene said to involve dozens of extras. Is this the same scene as the fundraiser mentioned above? In other Bat-news, Warner Bros. Consumer Products announced today that it has named Mattel, Inc. as the global master toy licensee for both Speed Racer and The Dark Knight. Mattel will apply its expertise across virtually all product lines including vehicles, action figures, action play, remote control vehicles, handheld electronics as well as games and puzzles. "Batman is an incredible franchise, and we are really excited about taking it to the next level with The Dark Knight," the film's producer Charles Roven said in a statement. "Along with the Batmobile we are introducing a new vehicle, the Batpod, a new Batsuit and some classic characters in The Joker and Harvey Dent. We are confident that fans around the world will enjoy the increased action and the continuation of a great story and we hope they appreciate the integrity and respect we've shown for this iconic character

I'm going to go on record right now and say that I love
William Shatner. When I was a kid we moved around a bit and it was tough to make any real friends. Fortunately, the one constant I had in my life at that time -- right or wrong -- was television. Every time we moved to a new place, I would turn on the TV and there would be a rerun of the original
Star Trek -- an old friend that I could always count on. William Shatner will always be Captain Kirk to me -- a friend there when I needed him.
So, reading this latest article provided for us by
PR Inside, I can't help but be disappointed. Apparently, Shatner was lobbying hard to get a cameo role in the new
Star Trek film, currently known as
Star Trek XI, being directed by
Lost and
Mission Impossible III vet
J.J. Abrams, but was denied a part by the film's producers. To add apparent insult to injury, Shatner also leaned that his
Star Trek co-star
Leonard Nimoy was cast in the new film and given a small cameo role. According to the article, these two events made Shatner very angry.
Although his people deny he's at all concerned or angry, I'll bet there's some truth to the story. After all, there probably wouldn't be a
Star Trek without Shatner (or Nimoy for that matter) so its seems right that he be allowed to participate in the new film if he really wants to. I can't read Shatner's mind, of course, but I'll bet he feels he deserves
some consideration for his role in creating the iconic and hugely popular franchise. But no matter if he's in the film or not, angry or not, he still deserves respect and consideration for creating one of the most beloved characters of all time.

Now here's a project that sounds pretty damn cool:
Frank Miller directing
Clive Owen in an adaptation of a
Raymond Chandler story -- and it'll probably be the first in a series!
Lots of Chandler's stories have been made into movies, but like
Variety says, the title "Trouble is...
Several years ago, DreamWorks had plans to make a live-action film based on the comic book Cowboys & Aliens a tale set in the Wild West that has cowboys and Indians teaming up to fend off an alien invasion. It's a simple but intriguing concept for an action Western pioneers and Apaches turning their pistols and bows away from each other to fight an extra-terrestrial threat intent on enslaving both peoples. In 2004, worked picked up on the picture as Columbia Pictures took over the reins and commissioned a screenplay for the film. After that, however, the film progressed no further. Today, Variety reports that the genre mash-up project is on again. DreamWorks is back in the saddle, this time teaming up with Universal Pictures to bring Cowboys & Aliens to the big screen. Ron Howard is producing the film -- it's not known if he's considering directing -- along with Imagine partner Brian Grazer. Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby have been hired to write a screenplay for Cowboys & Aliens. The duo both collaborated on the recent dystopian sci-fi film Children of Men as well as the upcoming actioner Iron Man also based on a comic book. Graphic novel creator and Platinum Studios head Scott Mitchell Rosenberg also produces, along with Transformers writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. The graphic novel is set in the American West during the 1800s. It tells what happens when a clash between a group of cowboys and Apaches is interrupted by the crash of an alien craft. The alien commander intends to tame the West and enslave everyone, but the cowboys and Native Americans join forces to fight the invaders
IGN recently visited the set of the
Iron Man movie where we talked with Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios President of Production. Feige, as you might expect, knows everything that's going on at the studio regarding bringing their classic comic characters to the big screen. One movie project that's been rumored for years, but has never gotten of the ground is
Captain America. Feige says that's about to change.
"I have a writer on Captain America right now," Feige says. "I'm hoping to get a director on that very soon, to get that into the pipeline in the next year or so. David Self is writing Captain America."
How will the studio approach the patriotic angle given the current political climate, and global anti-American sentiments? "I certainly think we'll have to play with that, play with Captain America being this patriotic propaganda machine on one hand, but being a very human Steve Rogers, interesting, fascinating hero in his own right," Feige says. "The good news is Marvel is perceived pretty well around the world right now, and I think putting another uber-Marvel hero into the worldwide box office would be a good thing. The script David Self is writing, the director, that we end up hiring, we certainly are going into it with our eyes open that these are all things that we have to deal with much the same way that Captain America, when thawed from the Arctic ice entered a world that he didn't recognize, and had to sort of deal with the changes, whether it was when Stan [Lee] did it in the '60s and that world Steve Rogers was coming into, or the world of 2009."
Don't expect the film to be completely set in the present day, however. Feige confirmed that much of the movie will take place in the past. He says, "Right now what we're developing would be about half and half, I'd say
