Stupendously awful on an epic scale, Australia shows how many ways a silly spin on a straightforwardly simple story can go fabulously wrong.
Director/co-writer Baz Luhrmann may not have been able to figure out whether he was making a romantic comedy, a gritty Western, a treatise on racial tolerance, or a war-drama tearjerker. But he apparently decided that the one element this frustratingly misbegotten concoction desperately needed to hold it together was a whole lotta camp. That approach may have worked for Luhrmann's way OTT Moulin Rouge! (or not, depending on your fondness for frippery), but feels as wrong here as lip gloss on a koala.
Australia's out-there tongue-in-cheekiness makes everything about the movie utterly unconvincing. The broad attempts at humor fall flat. The adventure scenes are ridiculously overblown. The heart-tugging moments feel forced and fake. And the halfbreed kid whose outcast plight is supposed to shock our collective conscience is as aggravatingly

We've seen some interesting
nanotech power concepts in the past, but researchers at UCLA have gone back to basics and developed a printable nanotech version of a traditional battery they say could power other printed, flexible nanotech devices. The batteries, which are less than a millimeter thin, feature the same zinc-carbon makeup as traditional rechargables, but are made by depositing thin layers of zinc and manganese oxide over a layer of nanotubes. Sadly, tech isn't producing usable amounts of power yet, but lead scientist George Gruner says the simplicity of the underlying tech should make it easy to solve that problem. Damn straight -- we're not giving up till we get a pair of
electric underpants to call our own.

So, the strike continues. Each day, writers are hitting the pavement with their nifty shirts and signs. They chant, elicit honks, and try to slow down those who haven't stopped in solidarity. As
I mentioned last week, Diablo Cody has hit the lines with her coiffed energy. She's also creating a little confusion now. See, a friend of mine, who is another striker, also has a black bob and funky fashion sense, and others are starting to confuse the two. I guess things could be worse!
Like, oh, I don't know... How about this --
The New York Times is reporting that there is a new study out which might change the pay drama at the root of this strike. A new financial assessment conducted by Global Media Intelligence and Merrill Lynch has concluded that a lot of the films income isn't going to the studios, but to the big names attached to the project -- stars, directors, and producers. This is because of participation deals. Instead of just getting a nice, neat sum of money when they make a film, many are not getting into the action, sharing in the gross revenue. That's right -- the revenue, NOT the profit.
So, if a movie makes boatloads of money, there isn't a problem. However, many productions are struggling these days and the stars and filmmakers are till getting the big bucks even if the film loses money -- the study found that there was an approximate $1.9 billion loss last year amongst the big studios. You can check out all the particulars over at the article, but what do you think? "Big mess" is coming to mind.

Vanity Fair has a list of the Top 40 Movie Soundtracks of All Time, but in anti-climatic fashion, they chose to release the Top 10 online first. Check out the list and commentary spoilers, after the jump!
Vanity Fair's Top Ten Movie Soundtracks Of All Time
Vanity Fair went and put together their Top 50 film soundtracks, releasing the top ten choices today -- the rest will be out next month in a one-time magazine, Movies Rock. No apostrophe, so we'll take them at their words and agree: Yes, movies do rock. But some of these don't belong in a Top 10. The bell-bottomed part of our brains agrees with Saturday Night Fever and Superfly is just what it sounds like but ... well let's lift the curtain for the rest...
10 The Big Chill
09 American Graffiti
08 Saturday Night Fever
07 Trainspotting
06 Superfly
05 The Graduate
04 Pulp Fiction
03 The Harder They Come
02 A Hard Day's Night
01 Purple Rain
Win some, lose some.
The Graduate: classic, right? Well,
somebody's wrong:
Variety? Or
Roger Ebert?
Anyway, this Top 10 is literally just the beginning: On December 2 there's going to be a Movies Rock concert at the Kodak Theatre in L.A. with Beyonce, Elton John, Fergie, Carrie Underwood, Mary J. Blige, and Jennifer Hudson taking on tunes from the films Vanity Fair selected. Via Billboard:
Beyonce will sing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" from "The Wizard of Oz," while Underwood will tackle the title number from "The Sound of Music." Other pairings on tap include Hudson on "Goldfinger," Fergie on "Live and Let Die," Blige and John Legend on "As Time Goes By" and John on music from animated films.
Do not set your Tivos!

The trailer for
Last Chance Harvey comes courtesy of
Apple.
Academy Award winners Dustin Hoffman (Rain Man) and Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility) reunite in Last Chance Harvey, a hopeful romance that celebrates new beginningsat any age. The film is directed and written by Joel Hopkins (Jump Tomorrow).
New Yorker Harvey Shine (Dustin Hoffman) is on the verge of losing his dead-end job as a jingle writer. Warned by his boss (Richard Schiff) that he has just one more chance to deliver, Harvey goes to London for a weekend to attend his daughters (Liane Balaban) wedding but promises to be back on Monday morning to make an important meetingor else.
Harvey arrives in London only to learn his daughter has chosen to have her stepfather (James Brolin) walk her down the aisle instead of him. Doing his best to hide his devastation, he leaves the wedding before the reception in hopes of getting to the airport on time, but misses his plane anyway. When he calls his boss to explain, he is fired on the spot.
Drowning his sorrows at the airport bar, Harvey strikes up a conversation with Kate (Emma Thompson), a slightly prickly, 40-something employee of the Office of National Statistics. Kate, whose life is limited to work, the occasional humiliating blind date and endless phone calls from her smothering mother (Eileen Atkins), is touched by Harvey, who finds himself energized by her intelligence and compassion.
The growing connection between the pair inspires both as they unexpectedly transform one anothers lives.
Twin Peaks is an American Emmy Award-nominated, Peabody and Golden Globe-winning television serial drama created by David Lynch and Mark Frost, which first aired in the United States on April 8, 1990 and ended on June 10, 1991. The show is set in the fictional town of Twin Peaks in northeastern Washington state. The primary filming took place in Snoqualmie, Washington and North Bend, Washington. The central plotline tells the story of FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (played by Kyle MacLachlan) and his investigation of the murder of a popular local teenage school girl and homecoming queen, Laura Palmer (played by Sheryl Lee), whose body was found on a river bank, wrapped in plastic. Although the series was created by Lynch and Frost, the majority of episodes are credited to different writers and directors. The show was co-produced by Aaron Spelling's production company, Spelling Entertainment, and ran for 30 episodes over two seasons.

Paul Vincent Raven-- bassist for post-punk pioneers
Killing Joke and, in more recent years, industrial elder statesmen
Ministry-- was found dead Saturday, October 20 in a private home in a small French village on the border of Switzerland, near Geneva. According to initial reports, his death was the result of a heart attack.
The 46-year-old Raven was in the thick of a couple different musical projects at the time of his death. He was in Geneva to record with French band Treponem Pal, and he planned to release an album by
Mob Research-- a collaboration with members of Warrior Soul and the Mission UK-- on Ministry leader Al Jourgensen's
13th Planet Records next year.
After Raven's death, Jourgensen released a statement saying, "I am in total shock. The world of music is a sadder, emptier place. Not only was Raven an extraordinary talent, but one of my closest dearest friends. Our condolences and prayers go to his immediate family. He will be truly missed by artists, musicians, and his fans the world over."

Fox gets the 'Skinny' on digital content
First series from new unit features comedic take on news
By Andrew Wallenstein
Oct 20, 2008, 04:07 PM ET
Fox Television Studios has launched a digital arm for creating low-cost programming intended for the Internet, TV or both.
The first series to emerge from FtvS' "think tank" is "The Skinny: Fat-Free News," a comedic take on current events from Mike Gibbons, executive producer of Fox's "Talkshow With Spike Feresten."
The studio's think tank, which now will go by the brand 15 Gigs, essentially is a forum for talent handpicked by the studio to try new formats on modest budgets. 15 Gigs is overseen by Stefanie Henning, senior vp marketing and digital media, and Jill Schwartz, senior vp programming development, at FtvS.
The 13-episode "Skinny" launched earlier this month on key portals including MySpace and Facebook with comedians Nadine Rajabi and Natasha Leggero.
