There are oh so many ways you can spend the holiday weekend: Gorging on stuffing, cranberry sauce and turkey tofu (mmmmm, tofu) till you can't possibly gorge anymore. Watching your snoring uncle try to balance that can of Schlitz on his belly while the Detroit Lions inevitably get pummeled by whoever they're playing in a game so boring you can't believe this is what you have to watch when there's a perfectly good 'Laguna Beach' marathon on MTV. Or my family's favorite: Reminiscing about a time way back when everyone in the family actually got along and spoke to one another. Sometimes we even get out pictures from that day.
But really, folks, is there a better way to spend Thanksgiving than gathering the family around the computer and engaging in a madcap contest of Insert Caption? I know, crazy question. Of course there is. But while you're here, wake up Uncle Fred, tell little cousin Sally to put down the gin already, and give us what ya got. First check out last week's winner for 'Casino Royale' (from zsxxx03, who I believe may be a porn star), then enter your caption for the photo below from 'Deck the Halls,' starring Danny DeVito and Matthew Broderick. Don't be afraid to ask the fam for help. We all know little cousin Sally is much funnier when she's drunk.

Anyone who's been waiting in line all day in Times Square and looking forward to the launch party is out of luck. Due to some pretty shoddy planning, the stage for the bands and entertainment was set up around the corner from the front of the line, making it completely out of sight for everyone in it. While everyone in line was handed stickers that looked like passes that had an 8pm time on them, they were unable to see any of the party that started at 8. Their schedule looked more like this: wait in line 'til midnight, buy Wiis, go home. The store closes at 10pm for the employees to get all the Wiis out, then they'll open at 12 for sales. That's all the entertainment the line has to look forward to. Ah well, at least they'll all get Wiis when all is said and done, so that's one up on Sony. –Adam Frucci

Stanford University computer scientist John Koza explains the National Popular Vote Bill, a plan that, if enacted, would effectively circumvent the role of the Electoral College in determining the President of the United States.
-----
The Electoral College was developed by our founding fathers and enshrined in the Constitution as a system of checks and balances to ensure a fair outcome in the choosing of our presidents.
However, the highly publicized 2000 presidential election, in which Al Gore may have won the popular vote but lost the contest to George W. Bush, galvanized those who wish to see the Electoral College scrapped in favor of a national popular vote.

jbpisio writes with a link to this blog-post summary that the Canadian government has commissioned a pair of unmanned subs to explore the geology of two underwater Arctic mountain ranges; the subs' mission will be to provide evidence supporting Canada's claim to huge swaths of potentially petroleum-rich seabed areas. According to the linked article, "The submersibles, scheduled to be launched in 2010, would be sent on a series of 400-kilometre missions north and west of Ellesmere Island, Canada's northernmost land mass and the country's gateway to the open Arctic Ocean - the scene of an international power struggle over undersea territory and petroleum resources believed to be worth trillions of dollars." At least five countries (besides Canada, these are the US, Russia, Denmark and Norway) would like a slice of those trillions.

The latest batch of financial results from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo make for interesting reading. In this instance, however, the results reveal more clearly than ever just how different the business models and market positioning of the three players are.
What's arguably even more interesting, though, is the manner in which these results have been treated by the mass media - especially the business press. Being asked to commentate on the results for a couple of major news channels has granted readers an intriguing insight into just how the media perceives the current console race - one which it is following more intently than any previous development in this sector.
Despite Microsoft's success with the Xbox 360, the firm's entertainment efforts continue to be a footnote to the overall Microsoft story - with a profitable quarter for the Xbox division, driven by sales of Halo 3, being granted vastly less airtime than other developments such as the firm's investment in Facebook...

Geoff Keighley, who is guest-editing Kotaku this week, has the official release from EA that their Chicago studio is closing. The 150 employees that used to work at the site are trying to be placed throughout the rest of the EA structure, while the games on tap for development there are currently on hold. The release is fairly terse when describing the reason the studio is being closed: "Each team is responsible for staying on a reasonable path to profitability. Sticking to that strategy is what gives us the financial resources and flexibility to take risks on new projects. Unfortunately, EA Chicago hasn't been able to meet that standard. The location has grown dramatically in the past three years while revenue from the games developed there has not. The number of employees has grown from 49 in 2004 to 146 people currently in the new facility in downtown Chicago. As it stands, EA Chicago has no expectation of hitting our profitability targets until FY2011 or later."

Just in time for the EU launch of Metroid Prime 3, Eurogamer has a retrospective on the Metroid series well worth checking out. "The first Metroid presciently set the tone for the future of the franchise by appearing first on a struggling format and only reaching foreign shores after lengthy delays. Metroid was initially released only for the Famicom Disc System in 1986. The FDS was one of Nintendo's first attempts to monkey around with new storage methods, but its success was limited and it never made it beyond Japan. One year later, Metroid finally appeared on the plain old NES in North America and then, another year later, we pox-ridden Europlebs were deemed worthy of having a copy to call our own. Hmm. Sounds familiar."
