Hard-man actor Ray Winstone has branded his role in new movie Beowulf the most gruelling of his career. The 50-year-old star, who plays the eponymous hero in the CGI adventure, even broke bones while shooting the epic tale. He says, "It was the most physical job I have done in my life. I was on wires, running up walls and spinning. You are tearing up a metal frame, which represents the dragon or pounding a stuntman.

Ubicod's prepped to release a hot, new do-it-all hi-definition media center in the new year. No, we're not talking Windows Vista Media Center but a proprietary, networked PVR, with time shifting, EPG, and dual-ATSC/NTSC tuner. It's not clear how much, if any storage is on-board as the specs only list "support for SATA HDD" as a peripheral. Hopefully, we're talking a few hundred gig on board with
eSATA support for a TB or more hanging off the back. The box brings plenty of connectivity with component, composite, and HDMI outs and 2x RCA, optical and coaxial digital (S/PDIF), and AC3 Dolby Digital audio support. It also features a USB host port for pc-less transfer of media from USB-equipped MP3 players and digital cameras. Best of all, the UMH700 connects to your home network via fixed Ethernet or even over the home power lines with support for the
not even close to 85Mbps HomePlug 1.0 Turbo standard. Media can then be streamed via UPnP and DLNA from your PC/Mac or other compatible product. Pricing and release, you wish. All we know is Ubicod, we'll be mackerel. Sorry, but it was so there.

Microsoft has warned that a faulty driver used for copy protection could allow a hacker to gain high-level access to a PC.

The problem lies with a driver called secdrv.sys, which is part Macrovision's SafeDisc software included with Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP. The software, which can block unauthorized copying of some media, also ships with Windows Vista, but that OS is not affected.
Microsoft said it knows of "limited attacks" that try to use the vulnerability, in an attack known as an elevation of privilege. The vulnerability could allow a hacker with local access to a machine to elevate his access rights and gain administrator rights, for example, allowing him to install software.
Microsoft said it was concerned that the vulnerability had been disclosed before it had a chance to fix it, which puts people at greater risk. "We continue to encourage responsible disclosure of vulnerabilities," it said.
Macrovision has issued an update for the driver. Microsoft said it also plans to issue a fix as part of its monthly patch cycle.
Danish security vendor Secunia said the vulnerability was first reported as a zero-day about two weeks ago, meaning the problem was being exploited by hackers as it became known. The company rated the vulnerability as "less critical," it's second lowest risk ranking for a vulnerability.

Update 3: This video is NOT staged! If you don't believe me download the video from my file share. For those of you saying "omg he ran into the mongoose," look at the video at real speed (the chase cam shows this), he would have had a split second to get out of the way of the mongoose....I doubt the guy was thinking..."I gotta be on my toes in case any vehicles come at me." Also, for those of you saying the guy on the base was a spotter he had just killed my two teammates right before I killed his teammate (thats why he had no idea what happened). You can tell by looking at the X's in the first person view. One final thing...I managed to get off the mongoose at the exact perfect time to change its trajectory to go towards that guy...its impossible to stage that. Not to mention this was a RANKED match
Update 2: Some of you asked what I thought when it happened and literally the first thing I said was "guys we're going to the theater after this game because something amazing just happened."
Update: The song is Escape by Craig Armstrong. Also, I captured the video using ATI usb TV wonder 2.0.
For those of you that think it was fake...its not. Its completely legit. If you want you can check out the entire game on my file share...Who the hell would play a custom 3 on 3 territories match on Valhalla...?

Gamasutra has up a pair of articles discussing the numbers from this round of the console wars. One focuses on the current frontrunner, Nintendo. Their numerical superiority is highlighted by the number of million selling titles they currently have on tap. Both the DS and Wii are carrying multiple-million sellers, with the current tally for (recently released) Diamond/Pearl sitting at 12,170,000. Meanwhile, in a lengthy article, the site fully explores the impact of console sales in numerous markets and venues, with comparisons between all three consoles (and a focus on Nintendo's sales). "PlayStation 2 titles make up the bulk of software sales in the U.S. and Europe again in 2007, as they have in previous years. The Wii's 2007 numbers equal the GameCube's in 2006, but its software growth isn't yet matching its hardware's. Microsoft's Xbox 360 has benefited largely from the Xbox's demise and the PlayStation 2 sales' slow decline. Even with the PlayStation 3 hardware's current state in Europe, its software sales in Europe are relatively low."

Today's Page Six has a funny item from one of our favorite character actors of all time,
Luis Guzman. It reads:
LUIS Guzman has appeared in nearly 100 movies and TV shows over 30 years - but people know him best for a film he wasn't even in. "To this day, I am recognized as the guy who killed Patrick Swayze in 'Ghost,' " Manhattan-born Guzman tells Page Six. "Only that wasn't me - it was an actor named Rick Aviles. It's weird, but that's the role I'm known for."
This is abominable, people.
Luis Guzman, or
"The Gooz", is one of Hollywood's finest actors! And he's being confused for another dude who kind of sort of looks like him and was in one hit movie!
Which is why we would like to do Luis Guzman a favor to help him receive the recognition he deserves. So here
A Handy Guide to Telling the Difference Between Luis Guzman and Rick Aviles. Let's get started:
Rick Aviles: Was born in 1952 in New York, New York.
Luis Guzman: Was born on New Year's Day in 1957 in Cayey, Puerto Rico.
Rick Aviles: Was a stand-up comedian before his big break in the 1981 movie
Cannonball Run.
Luis Guzman: Did social work before landing his first part in
Crocodile Dundee 2 as Hunter.
Rick Aviles: Has had supporting roles in
Joe's Apartment, Waterworld, The Godfather: Part III, and
The Secret of My Succe$s.
Luis Guzman: Has had supporting roles in
Boogie Nights, Traffic, Punch-Drunk Love, The Adventures of Pluto Nash, and
Anger Management.
Rick Aviles: Passed away at 42 years old after contracting HIV as a result of heroine abuse.
Luis Guzman: Is still alive.
Luis Guzman: Lives with his wife and 5 children in Vermont.
Rick Aviles: Is no longer living.
Luis Guzman: Pronounces his first name "Loo-ee."
Rick Aviles: Pronounces his name "Rick".
Luis Guzman: Is the greatest living American character actor after only about 10 other guys. He is also the only man who could have improved upon the
Werewolf Bar Mitzvah video simply by appearing in it.
Rick Aviles: Is a terribly tragic Hollywood story. Also he killed
Patrick Swayze in
Ghost.
We hope this clears things up, Loo-ee!

The names in the title of this post kinda sound like they're from some sort of funky international law firm or something, don't they? Or maybe, instead of a law firm, a relief agency for orphaned children specializing in Asia? That would actually make more sense considering the true nature of this post. What the heck am I talking about? Glad you asked.
According to
Production Weekly, Jonathan Rhys Meyers (of
Bend It Like Beckham and the underrated Ang Lee film
Ride With The Devil),
Radha Mitchell (of
High Art and
Man on Fire),
master of swords and
two-handed pistol shooting Chow Yun Fat and former Chow co-star
Michelle Yeoh are booked to be in the period drama
The Children of Huang Shi for director
Roger Spottiswoode.
The film, which tells the story of young British Journalist Gregg Hogg (played by Myers) who saves a group of orphaned children during the 1937 Japanese invasion of China by taking them on a 1000 mile journey to safety, is being written by
Jane Hawksley. Mitchell will play the brave Australian nurse who helps Hogg save the children.
This new film covers similar ground explored before by Steven Spielberg in his film
Empire of the Sun . In that film, a very young and pre-
Batman Begins,
Christian Bale is forced to flee his home when the Japanese invade China. He ends up separated from his parents and living at an abandoned airfield with other refugees -- including
John Malkovich,
Joe Pantoliano and a young
Ben Stiller in one of his first movie roles .
Empire of the Sun is a great movie that if you haven't seen lately, or at all, deserves a look.
If
The Children of Huang Shi, which while obviously dealing with similar subject matter tells a different story, turns out to be half as good as
Empire of the Sun, I will definitely be interested in seeing it. Even if Chow Yun Fat doesn't fly through the air, pistols blazing away in both hands, taking out bad guys.
Filming on
The Children of Huang Shi is expected to begin mid-November in China with production moving later to Australia.

Gamasutra is running a series of studies on what people from certain demographics want from games. Their most recent article takes a look at former gamers, from the age of 25 to 35, and how they view their old hobby. Many seem to have replaced games with social networking during their non-productive time, and they also tend to favor games they can play with friends in the same room, rather than anonymous online interaction. Previous parts of the study focused on family gamers and older gamers. "We had some of our test consoles rigged up to an internet connection to see how these Missing Gamers would respond to online play. But whilst they were initially impressed at the ability to play with other people all over the world, they soon picked up on the fact that many of the people they were playing with were either too good, or too immature to endure for any length of time. It wasn't long before the online games were abandoned in favor of the simpler split-screen local multiplayer offerings. The ability to nudge, rib, and cajole each other on the sofa (not to mention share snacks and drinks) was simply too much fun to resist."
