It?s that time of week again boys and girls, where 1PStart reminds you of what is hitting the shelves this week. After last week?s absolutely horrid selection of new goods, this week offers a slightly more fruitful bounty with The Elder Scrolls IV: The Shivering Isles headed to the PlayStation 3, but outside of that there?re just a bunch of movie-based games.
Everyone knows how that?s going to turn out.

To say that EA?s port of Valve?s Orange Box on PS3 suffered a bit from 1Up?s damning preview is a serious understatement. Now, either EA has really taken 1Up?s complaints to heart or the site was lumbered some very early preview code to toy with because fresh impressions are filtering through the interwebs painting a very different picture of the Orange Box?s performance. Kotaku, IGN and GameSpy are three big names that have come out in support of the mega-bundle, stating that in final code, frame rate issues were noticeable but negligible and certainly not bad enough to make much of an impact on the gameplay.
If this proves to be the case in the final retail copy, and there?s little reason to suspect it won?t, then EA should get something short of a clap on the back, but a least a nod of acknowledgement that it has finally pulled its finger out and overcome its PS3 demons. However, one sentiment still remains ? that the Xbox 360 version is superior ? and that isn?t going to please PS3?s hardcore.
The control scheme has its quirks, but this is still an intense and enjoyable shooter.

Well, folks, it isn't often we here at moviegasm get to herald the arrival of a new star, but today is just such a day. The monster opening of Disney's
Enchanted is certainly attributable to mostly positive reviews, a family-friendly story and relatively competition-free long Thanksgiving weekend, but agents, producers, and studio heads will all be giving most of the credit for the $50 million opening to star Amy Adams.

With all the holiday hubbub that comes to cinema, there are as many fantastically sappy duds as they are classics. And who can endure another trite heart-warming family comedy starring a borderline B-rated actor? Fortunately, they are a wealth of movies old and new to fulfill your seasonal cravings. Here are the five most memorable holiday movies, sponsored by AMD. Elf Will Ferrell typically seems more in his element with low-browed jokes and streaking in undies--but he's magical as the six-foot munchkin in Elf. Playing an adopted elf in Santa's workshop, Ferrell-elf's naivete and child-like innocence provide uplifting, candy-coated laughs that are fitting for the season. Best yet, it remains adult and mature enough to keep the attention of even hardened cinematic scrooges--proving that films need not succumb to the grating kitsch of Chipmunk Christmas to have family appeal. The Nightmare Before Christmas Tim Burton brings his macabre and eccentric aesthetics to the holiday spirit with The Nightmare Before Christmas. Stop-motion animations shine--especially in the breath-taking HD DVD release--and the gnarled architecture bring out the quintessential Burton sensibilities. Even with its dark-skinned plot line, the movie maintains a light-hearted spirit, reassuring you that the world will not succumb to underworld despair in spite of skeletal scares and ghoulish overtures. Die Hard Not everybody wants a feel-good Tom Hank experiences from Polar Express, or quick-shot comedic diversions from Tim Allen in Santa Claus during the festive season. For those who want to celebrate the holidays free from holiday contrivances, there's the Bruce Willis in the classic Die Hard. Isolate yourself from the happy-go-lucky plots of giving as Alan Rickman brings Shakespearean slickness to a terrorist mastermind. Arguably the best in the series, the movie also has an added bonus of an HD DVD version being available this holiday season. So stock up on Twinkies and check this one out for a delectable holiday interlude. The Nativity Story Although a certain reinvented jolly old saint has largely taken prominence over the Son of Man, New Line Cinema taps into the billion-dollar Passion of the Christ niche with The Nativity Story, slated for release on December 1st. Covering the birth of Jesus, director Catherine Hardwicke pays meticulous attention to detail with the costumes, history and even theology, in hopes of keeping the experience as authentic as possible. If warm tales of Kris Kringle with Adam Smith undertones don't satisfy, then look out for this film next month. A Charlie Brown Christmas As the holiday season hits, not a few can empathize with Charlie Brown--and his difficulty in coping with a season pressuring frenzied shoppers to be happy. A Charlie Brown's Christmas touchingly cuts into Christmas consumerism with sentiments of love and unity that strive to capture the true meaning of holiday spirit. It was also controversial and unorthodox for its time; TV execs were squeamish about the show having Linus quote passages from the King James Bible, and the lack of a laugh track was unheard of for children's cartoons during the era. The short, 25-minte segment aired for the first time on 1965, and captured the attention of 50% of TV viewers. The show still lives strong, as ABC enjoyed the high ratings when it aired last year

Fans of big old sweeping historical, romance, adventure epics (like us) are mostly pretty excited for Australia, Baz Luhrmann's (Romeo + Juliet!, Moulin Rouge!!) new 1940's set ode to his home country, starring native son and daughter Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman. It's the most expensive movie ever made in Australia, and is the Great White hope for its tourism industry. Well, it finally premiered last night in Sydney and sooo how is it? According to early critics, it's pretty good! Stirring and exciting enough, romantic enough, not as treacly as its big, grand trailer (above) may make it seem. We'll give a little digest of the reviews below.
Megan Lehmann for The Hollywood Reporter:
Tourism Australia may have politely requested ]the kangaroos'] inclusion, with hopes for a tourist revival riding on this $130 million Outback tale, along with what seems like the future of the entire local film industry. If Luhrmann felt the weight of that responsibility, it doesn't show. His "Australia" is much less earnest than the trailer suggests, layered with a thin veneer of camp and a nod and a wink to accompany the requisite Aussie cliches.
Having shunned the recent grinding run of bleak suburban micro-dramas, Australians are primed to embrace his monumental magic-realist vision, which honors the country's heritage and celebrates the invigorating majesty of its landscape.
Anne Barrowlcough for The Times:
But if it sounds shallow and predictable, Australia is, in fact, anything but.
The cliches are saved by little jokes and asides, as if Luhrmann is saying 'Yes, I know, but what can you do?' In an early scene, as the newly-arrived Sarah drives toward her station, Faraway Downs, with Drover, a herd of kangaroo lopes alongside their vehicle.
As Sarah “oohs” and “aahs” with melodramatic wonder, a shot rings out and one of the kangaroos falls, killed by an Aboriginal stockman riding, literally, shot gun on the roof of the car. The horrified aristocrat spends the rest of the trip staring at the hind leg of the kangaroo hanging disconsolately over the windscreen, and the trails of blood that trek through the dust on the glass.
Claire Sutherland for the Herald Sun:
The film begins with surprising slapstick and trademark Luhrmann over-the-top humour - a scene featuring Jackman giving himself a bath with a bucket is pure beefcake and proud of it - but settles into a compelling and moving tale which traverses war, race relations, class and the Stolen Generation.
It's a movie with a message, but Luhrmann provides the audience with no shortage of thrills, from a cliff hanger cattle stampede to the bombing of Darwin. Kidman and Jackman are perfect together, Jackman's broad speaking drover a perfect foil to Kidman's snooty English rose.
The far more negative Jim Schembri for the Canberra Times:
...local films with black themes or major indigenous characters tend to do poorly, so if Australia succeeds here it could represent a breakthrough. We've always had trouble dealing with racial issues on film, so, in that regard, the film could be a landmark.
If only Baz had made the damn thing shorter by at least half an hour.
So, not bad! Of course these are mostly foreign reviews and don't matter a lick to us! We'll have to wait until Jeffrey Lyons or his dopey son Ben weigh in to decide if it's the greatest thing ever or a complete dud. Silly Australians thinking this is about them. It hasn't been about them since this happened.

The developer community--and Sun--are examining the nonstandard virtual machine that Google built to run Java apps in Android.

Check your brain at the door and you'll enjoy this campy, ludicrously over-the-top fighter.
THE BOTTOM LINE: Though far from a technical fighting game, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe exceeds expectations by delivering a solidly enjoyable casual fighter. The Mature-rated gore is missed, but the core combat here feels more confident and energetic than it has in years.

After last week's repeat, Gossip Girl is back and jumping right in where we left off. As a quick recap: Jenny showed up at the masked ball to get revenge on Upchuck. She was confused for Serena, and grabbed by Nate, who told "Serena" he's not over her and kissed her. Blair grabbed "Serena" and ripped a bracelet off Jenny's wrist. Jenny didn't notice this, but Blair did, and figured out that "Serena" was actually Jenny. Dan's old girlfriend, Vanessa, came back to town but Dan chose to stay with Serena instead (likely because Vanessa's presumptuous and annoying). Lily and Rufus shared a kiss. And Nate found his father's cocaine stash but wound up taking the blame when his mother found it as well.

Nintendo has reassured that it will be able to get its games on the shelf for Christmas. They are tackling the bottle neck on its production line "As every publisher talks about shifting over to Wii it's creating this crush of production right now at our factories for software", said Reggie Fils-Aime at a recent conference. Midway last week complained that this bottleneck was hurting its games sales on the console, as well as their decision to make games for the console. Reggie also says that ?This is a very short-term situation that is effectively going to be resolved in a course of three week's time."
