Back in the day
Filed under: Displays, HDTV, Home Entertainment

Uniden loosed
their 47-inch and 37-inch LCDs onto the Japanese market back in Q2 of this year. However, those panels sorely lacked a "Full HD" pixel resolution you'll likely enjoy in panels of this size. No worries, both panels just took a pixel kick up to 1920x1080 without a change in model number or more importantly, price. Each features a 500cd/m2 brightness, anti-glare coating, integrated analaog/digital tuner, and a healthy dose of in/outs including 2x HDMI and 2x component. Strangely, the contrast ratio is nowhere to be found in the press release or specs. No worries, you're not the type to buy an HDTV based on specs alone anyway, are you? Good, didn't think so. Hitting Japan in your choice of white or black starting December 8th for ¥239,800 / ¥189,800 or about $2,071 / $1,640, respectively.

Review:
There's a special kick that comes in finding a new star. So step
up, Ellen Page, and take your bows. You won't find a sass queen
around who can touch Page as Juno MacGuff, a pregnant
sixteen-year-old with a smart mouth that won't quit. Page (Hard
Candy) has the rare knack of being brutal and funny
simultaneously. Her flow of quips and put-downs comes courtesy of
debuting screenwriter Diablo Cody, another find. I'd also include
director Jason Reitman, son of Ivan, in the newbie box, for making
such a cleanly executed, pungently comic job of it, but he's an old
hand, having directed Thank You for Smoking last year.
Here's the thing about Juno: She says a lot, but not always what
she means. Take her treatment of Paulie Bleeker
(Superbad's Michael Cera), the geek who fathered her baby.

GameCyteSean writes "GameCyte is reporting that Harmonix, EA, MTV and Viacom have been targeted by a class action lawsuit. Customers allege that the companies knowingly shipped defective bass drum pedals for the music game Rock Band, then exploited customers' necessity for replacements by having the game's hardware warranty extension expire just as the sequel, Rock Band 2 — a game with improved pedals — was scheduled to release." I wonder if we'll see a similar suit against Neversoft and Activision over the equipment problems related to the Guitar Hero World Tour launch.

Few iPod docks resemble the front bumper of a car, yet that's exactly what Shaper Image's iBeam Speaker Dock manages to do. It connects with any dockable iPod and uses SRS WOW technology to deliver surround sound. On board you get everything you'd expect from a speaker dock like an AM/FM radio, a backlit LCD, and an auxiliary input for connecting other MP3 players. The iBeam can also be hooked up to the company's optional Woofi subwoofer ($49 bucks) for additional thumpage. At $169 dollars, it's not that pricey and I admit the weird car-like design helps it stand out from the rest of the pack. – Louis Ramirez

A short book review and news item on information security.
When did they start giving mopeds to walruses.
Think your wife may be cheating on you? Wondering who your boss might be talking to? "Learn the truth. Spy today."

So reads an ad for "Bluetooth Spy Pro-Edition," one of nearly 200 mobile phone spyware products currently listed for sale on eBay.
The software, which costs as little as $3.99, can be used to view photographs, messages, and files on the phone, listen into phone conversations, and even make calls from the phone being spied upon.
Security experts are concerned because while these products aren't illegal, installing them without authorization to spy on someone else most definitely is.
And that's exactly what some of these products seem to be advertising. "You can now easily find out who your partner, business associates, friends have been in contact with," reads the Bluetooth Spy ad. "Whether you are suspicious of an affair or would just like information that will help progress your career, you can now do all of the following using your mobile phone, and the person you are targeting will not suspect a thing. Guaranteed!"
Another spellcheck-free ad claims that "You will now be able to establish who your freinds associates and husband/wife have been conversating with, you can read messages, even download them to your own phone or laptop, view their information and pictures."
This type of mobile spy software has been available for several years now, sold by companies like Flexispy and Neo-Call. Typically, however, it is much more expensive, and these companies are generally careful to promote only their legal uses such as monitoring corporate equipment, said Mikko Hyppönen, CTO with F-Secure. But the software is often used for nefarious purposes, such as industrial espionage and spying, Hyppönen said.
According to him, eBay shouldn't be selling this software; it is simply too dangerous.
Another security expert said that this type of software may even be harmful to the buyer. "You're certainly at a higher risk with the software of there being additional functionality that is not advertised and potentially malicious," said Craig Schmugar, virus research manager at McAfee's AVERT labs. "In general, when you see the advertising claims made and the types of pages represented, you should approach them with some skepticism."
This software can be installed via a Bluetooth connection and typically runs on both Windows Mobile and Symbian operating systems, McAfee said.
eBay representatives could not immediately be reached for comment on this story.
Where have you been all my life?
Ambilight TVs are awesome for that amazing halo that flows around the edges of the screen. It's partly why Philips is one of the major LCD sellers in the US, and why I adore them so much. Of course, that glow wouldn't mean nothing without a solid screen, and yes, they're gorgeous, too. Fastest refresh rates in the LCD TV biz, I believe. But they've been slow as hell in getting out true 1080p resolution HD screens.
Until today.
This is the first, using their noise reducing pixel plus tech in its fourth iteration. The 3rd gen was amazing. My favorite TV to date is the same sized LCD with Pixel Plus 3, and a lower res of 1366 by 768 (compared to the 1920 by 1080 res of this one). Details are sparse, but I'm sure more will come.
This could be my new favorite TV. –Brian Lam

With the increased adoption of SOA, companies are finding the ESB (enterprise service bus) the "must have" application to connect disparate systems. Although a number of open source ESBs, such as Mule, OpenESB, Apache ServiceMix, and JBoss ESB have been around for a while, these products take a relatively heavyweight approach to integration by implementing the JBI (Java Business Integration) specification. A more recent open source arrival, WSO2 ESB, takes a lightweight approach, focusing on integration based on Web service standards.

So fans of both camps were giddy when Konami announced plans to bring both titles ? Rondo and Symphony ? to the PSP in a single package, Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles, along with a full remake of Rondo. Like Seinfeld?s black-and-white cookie, the combo could have epitomized harmony between two very different types of gamers, but it turns out neither group will be completely satisfied with this package, thanks to two major flubs: the flawed emulation of the original games, and the fact you?re first forced to play the remade Rondo to access them.
That?s not to say the new Rondo?s no good. Despite a complete visual and aural overhaul ? and even a few subtle game-play tweaks ? it?s faithful to the original down to the smallest detail, from where extra lives are hidden to a little-known tap move that extends your attack range by a few crucial pixels.
Since before the launch of Xbox 360 in late 2005, Screen Digest has tracked multiple data points regarding every single packaged retail title confirmed for 256 bit home console platforms. This article does not contain all the data from the Study but does highlight some key points for the console sales for Holiday 2007.
Key findings:
? With around a year less in the marketplace, Nintendo Wii will offer customers a games library with just twenty less releases than Xbox 360 has managed to generate in twice the time.
? Vigorous third party support and new releases of their strongest franchises in Super Mario Galaxy and Halo 3 will drive games sales for Wii and Xbox 360 in Q4
? PlayStation 3?s release pipeline is muted by comparison despite a pared down version of Gran Turismo, new IP in Uncharted and possible hardware related announcements before year end.
? Publisher commitment is shifting to Wii with eighty six releases in Q4 compared with forty seven for 360 and thirty eight for PS3. Of Wii Q4 releases over a quarter are exclusive to the platform, compared with eight for Xbox 360 and five for PS3
? With the most abundant development resources in the industry, publishing giant EA leads the way into the Christmas shopping season with the most releases scheduled for Q4. Ubisoft and THQ follow.
Screen Digest believes that games based on IP licensed from other media constitutes more than a third - around 37 per cent - of all releases in Q4.
? For casual games publishers have shown a marked preference for Wii with nearly forty titles aimed at the casual gamer scheduled for release in Q4, compared with barely a dozen between Xbox 360 and PS3.
Q4 releases cement the UK?s position as a key territory for console games developers, leading European territories and, given its size, more than holding its own against the US and Japan.
The Treeline calls their bike lamps "functional art". Built from chunks of the bike like the front suspension fork, these lamps will add a soft glow to your room while screaming guests, "I could kick your ass, and I'm just a lamp" - the tacit screams are the "functional" part.

Product-Reviews writes: "When we get two closely matched products or brands it?s inevitable that you will get comparisons. Take Microsoft vs Apple for example; they have been compared for years on many products and services they release."
"The Sony PS3 vs Xbox 360 debate, this will go on for many years to come not only on the same name games appearing on each console but also with different frame rates, hardware and software. My opinion is that both of these game consoles will become much more than just for games, they will network more with other software and hardware."
"The Xbox 360 will go the IPTV route and the Sony PS3 will bring Freeview TV and other TV services. That is just one example but they will both feature different software and similar software, as an owner of both I am happy as I have seen news of many products and services that will be exclusive to each machine. This means there will be times when I use just one of the systems for weeks, but the other will always get used when another product or service is released exclusive to that machine."

The entire command script read subsystem has changed. The previous system read directly from the script file. The new system reads the script file into a buffer, which can be randomly accessed. This permits looping (realistically only repeat loops). Infinite loop protection has been added. Variable increment and decrement have been added to support looping.

A new series on SkyOne in the UK called
The Big Idea pits inventors and entrepreneurs against one another for a chance to have their invention or business idea realized, and to win £100,000. Since I live in the US I've never actually seen the show, but I did find a commercial for it I think you guys will enjoy. It features a ton of English pound coins toppled over like dominoes, a feat that may or may not have been accomplished with some clever editing, but who cares, it's still cool to look at. I think pounds are a bit thicker than American coins, but I still imagine it would be difficult to make them stand up like that. I don't think I would have the patience to pull off such a feat. In fact, I know I wouldn't. Check out the coinage after the jump.
