(InfoWorld) - Some?30 hours after the problem erupted, eBay's Skype engineers continue to work to fully restore this extremely popular Internet telephony and instant messaging service, while many business users deal with work disruptions.

Although?steady progress has been made throughout the day Friday, the problem, which has affected millions of Skype users, hasn't been fully fixed, a Skype spokeswoman said at around 9 p.m. GMT. Skype plans to provide an official update on the situation later on Friday, she said.

The widespread software problem, which centers on the system's ability to log users into the service, has particularly stung people who use Skype for business. Skype estimates that about 30 percent of its users employ Skype as a work-related communications tool.

"The outage has had quite a profound effect on my working day and has meant spending time setting up other chat clients and networking with colleagues via alternative means," Michael Pick, a freelance blogger and social media consultant,?said Friday.

Based in Japan, Pick works from home and has clients and colleagues all over the world, many of whom also work from their homes. "I guess that might make us a particularly dependent group on Skype," he wrote.

Skype is his virtual work communications hub for text chats, file sharing, and voice calls. "In the average day there is very little time that Skype isn't on in the background, and I use it extensively to speak to clients and colleagues scattered all over the world," he wrote.

In addition to the basic, free Skype services, Pick also pays for additional Skype telephony services. He feels Skype could have handled this situation better from a support and communications perspective. "For a so-called Web 2.0 service, communication is key, and I can imagine that Skype may well have lost quite a few supporters in favor of some of the other VoIP services today," he wrote.

Thomas Vander Wal, a social Web advisor and consultant who runs a one-man company called InfoCloud Solutions in Bethesda, Maryland, uses Skype as his primary communication channel for about half of his customers.

"When customers buy a day of my time and I am not meeting face to face, Skype is often my primary means of communicating as I can connect to a client with voice and/or video and leave it running for the day. It is like having a tunnel into their offices with them seeing or hearing me working on their issues," he?said Friday.

Luckily for him, he hadn't scheduled any such engagement during the time of the outage. "I use Skype 2 or 3 days a week, and it hit at a time where it didn't impact me," he wrote.

Much more stressed out about the outage is Stefan Topfer, CEO and chairman of Winweb International in London, which offers Skype as part of a suite of services for small businesses.

Winweb has about 250,000 registered users, so the company's customer support lines have been ringing off the hook inquiring about Skype.

At the time of his phone interview with IDG News Service on Friday, more than 8 hours had passed since Skype had last provided an official update about the situation, and Topfer was livid about this.

"That's a whole business day. That's quite unacceptable. I'm quite upset about it," Topfer said. He had been unsuccessfully trying to contact his company's main Skype contact since the beginning of the outage on Thursday.

Once the service is restored and Skype explains to him what happened, he'll decide whether to stick with Skype or seek other options.

"My masters are my clients, and I have to provide them with a good service. This outage is going to impact my business, no question about it," Topfer said. "The most stunning thing of all is really the way this customer care has been handled."

For Pick, the situation has been a learning experience in several ways. For example, free of the real-time communication distractions from Skype, "I have managed to get a lot more done in terms of writing work," he wrote. And the situation has made it clear that it's never good to depend too much on a single service, company or tool, which, he now realizes, can be "a potentially hazardous career move."

At press time -- 10:40 p.m. GMT -- Skype hadn't yet provided an update on the problem. The latest official message from Skype remained the one posted at 11 a.m. GMT on its Heartbeat blog.

Skype has about 220 million registered users worldwide. At peak times, it has an average of 9 million concurrent users on its network, the Skype spokeswoman said.

The online console market will be worth USD 10.5 billion by 2011, with connected home consoles accounting for 18.6 per cent of global videogame market revenue.

That's a leap from USD 981 million in 2007, representing just 2.5 per cent of the global games market, according to new research from IDC.

Entirely separate from PC gaming, the online console market will be crucial to the success of the format holders and third-party publishers, with subscription fees, paid for downloadable content and in-game advertising all key to growth.

The gang at DARPA — you know, the ones working on invisible, shoot-through, self-healing armor — want to create kill-proof soldiers that have characteristics of animals that can survive in extreme conditions. They're researching things like allowing soldiers to redirect oxygen demand throughout their bodies to allow them to stay underwater for hours. Dammit, DARPA, didn't you see the Bourne movies? This isn't going to end well for you.

The project has two goals: the first is to allow soldiers to survive in extreme conditions, such as high altitude, blazing heat, freezing cold, and underwater, by taking on the traits of the animals that live in said environments. The second is to make soldiers "kill proof" my making them immune to deadly chemicals and radiation. Apparently there are a bunch of organisms that are resistant to those horrible things that'll kill you or I off in a matter of minutes, and DARPA wants to get those characteristics into our soldiers.

It all sounds totally wacky and unrealistic to me, but I'm just a blogger and not an overpaid government scientist, so what do I know? If they do manage to figure this stuff out, they'd just better make sure none of these super animal soldiers loses their memory, falls in love, loses said love, is framed by a Russian, and uses violence to remember who they are and how they got into such a wacky predicament. Unless they film it, of course, 'cause that shit is badass. [Danger Room]

From the comedy troupe behind MTV's '90s sketch series The State, Comedy Central's Stella and the feature film Wet Hot American Summer, comes The Ten — an offbeat series of vignettes loosely based on the 10 commandments. For fans of the above-mentioned projects, the strange brand of screwball comedy on display here will be in keeping with what they'd expect from this group of talented comedians. Everyone else, though, may find many of the individual premises difficult to accept. Each of the 10 short stories are introduced by Paul Rudd, who guides the audience through the film from a bare, black soundstage, where two giant stone tablets loom over his interactions with his wife (Famke Janssen) and mistress (Jessica Alba). The cast also is populated with former State veterans Joe Lo Truglio, Michael Ian Black, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Thomas Lennon, Ken Marino (who also serves as the writer) and David Wain (who directs), as well as an impressive cast of guest stars including Winona Ryder, Adam Brody, Liev Schreiber, Gretchen Mol, Rob Corddry and Ron Silver. But despite the star power and the admirable way the entire cast throws themselves into their various roles, many of the stories are little more than thinly crafted sketches based around concepts that don't hold up well when stretched to feature length. Take for instance the first story, inspired by the commandment "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." It centers on a guy (Brody) who jumps out of a plane without a parachute, gets halfway buried in the ground and becomes an overnight celebrity. On television, it could have been a tight two-minute gag, but here it continues on long after it stops being humorous. The same is true of "Honor thy father and mother," which features Kenney-Silver as the mother of a pair of twin African-American boys who believe their real father is Arnold Schwarzenegger. Just as Oliver Platt shows up in Terminator gear doing a bad Ahnold impression, she realizes that their father is actually Arsenio Hall. It sounds a lot funnier on paper than it is in the film, which seems to be the problem with many of the stories. It can be done (Monty Python did it brilliantly in The Meaning of Life), but to attempt it without taking into account the differences between the two mediums is a recipe for failure. And while The Ten doesn't necessarily fail on all accounts, it could have benefited from a more developed storytelling approach. One of the best creative choices here is the variations in style between the stories, so that each has a slightly different flavor. There's an animated sequence, more than one musical interlude and physical comedy involving sex with a ventriloquist's dummy. The advantage of this shotgun approach is that some are bound to succeed where others don't. Though the plots don't stand up to any kind of logical scrutiny (and seem designed specifically not to), they often succeed on the strength of the performers involved. Ryder is totally committed as the woman who steals the aforementioned dummy in order to make it with him in a motel room. Mol walks the fine line between irreverence and sacrilege as a librarian who has a passionate love affair with Jesus Christ while on vacation in Mexico. And Corddry is hilariously deadpan as a prisoner who covets another prisoner's "wife" (played by Marino). How a script this wacky attracted so many name actors remains a mystery, but the filmmakers are lucky to have them. The Ten is a flawed film, but not fatally so. Before screening at South by Southwest, it generated a certain amount of buzz as a midnight film at Sundance, which seems to be the right place for it

In the midst of the Manhunt 2 rating fiasco, Take-Two management questioned the point of having an ?adults only? rating when it effectively bars a console game from release.

During a conference call today, Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick said that the firm is ?evaluating its options? regarding the release of the ?adults only? rated Manhunt 2.

?We?re determined to bring Manhunt 2 to the consumers for which it was intended, and to do so in a responsible fashion,? he stated.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board recently gave the game an ?AO? rating because of intense violence. Many large retailers don?t carry games with an AO rating, and console manufacturers don?t allow such rated games on their machines.
