robbyyy writes to mention a Computer Business Review Online article about commentary from Bruce Perens to Novell, about their recent deal with Microsoft. He argues that the company should quickly turn its back on the deal, because Novell risks being left behind by open source progress. From the article: "While Linux creator Linus Torvalds has previously stated that the Linux kernel will remain on the GPL v2 license, much of the code that makes up a complete Linux distribution is owned by the FSF, which intends to re-license all its code to GPL v3 as soon as it is completed in early 2007. 'In the face of these changes, Novell will probably be stuck with old versions of the software, under old licenses, with Novell sustaining the entire cost and burden of maintaining that software,' Perens wrote, adding that Novell faces a choice of sticking with Microsoft and being left behind, or turning its back on the patent deal."

The WGA announced Tuesday that the International Longshore Warehouse Union sent the hardest hit striking WGA members 60-pound holiday food baskets with frozen turkeys and other Thanksgiving fixings. ILWU member Chris Bradley said they were paid for by the rank-and-file. The WGA called the baskets "Capra-esque".
An anonymous reader writes to mention coverage on IGN of an ongoing issue with a WiiConnect update. A faulty update may be causing some Wii consoles to become inoperative. Nintendo is replacing affected consoles, free of charge. From the article: "Several error codes have been reported so far, but the most prevalent of them are 110213 and 32002. We contacted Nintendo about this issue, and they filled us in on what you should do if you find yourself in this predicament. Currently, Nintendo has two options in place to resolve the problem. If you do not have any data saved to your system that is important to keep, then you can contact Nintendo customer service and they will ship a new console to you in 3-4 business days. However, if you do have important data saved to your system, then things get a little trickier"

The sites range from the free-wheeling MOO.com and Zazzle.com to easy-to-use MyCardMaker.com.
porcupine8 writes "Like the Playstation 3, the Nintendo Wii sold out on launch day this weekend. Unlike the PS3, the launch was a peaceful affair with no reports yet of console-related violence in the US. This may be partially due to the fact that Nintendo promises to have a total of four million units in stores by Christmas, with the bulk of those going to North America. Midnight launch parties on both the east and west coasts ushered the new console in with a bang."

With the $399 Kindle, Amazon's first hardware offering, users can download thousands of titles, plus periodicals and Web fare from Whispernet.

Wrecking Crew, Sonic 3D Blast and Super Air Zonk have all joined the US Virtual Console’s library of downloadable games.
For a geeky board game, Axis and Allies Miniatures is your ticket.

Can the company cut its way to profitability and prominence, or is it just looking for a graceful exit and friendly buyer -- at this point

To push its new author-narrated crime show Murder by the Book, Court TV is installing narrow-band "audiobeam" sound projectors in bookstores that focus whispery monologues at individual customers. " "Hey you, over here. Don't turn around. Can you hear me? Do you ever think about murder, committing the ultimate crime?" intones the voice to you, and you alone, or anyone else who walks into the beam. Just in case you scream "Yes! Oh yes!" and attack your fellow book-browsers with joyful homicidal abandon, nearby posters warn that the "mystery whisperer" (gag) is all part of this innocuous effort at "experiential marketing" (double gag). Supposedly, the devices have been installed in Time Warner Center, so enjoy that on your lunch break for this rainy day. The technology involved comes mainly from military use, so it has no chance of accidentally boiling your brains out or anything.

About two years ago, I set out to list the hottest women on TV who are
over 40,
over 50, and
over 60. There were a lot candidates to choose from, even in the over 60 category, making it a particularly tough set of list to compose.
But now that our friends at AOL have decided to compile a list of TV's
50 sexiest women of all time (starting today with Nos. 50-41), I'm going to take on an even greater challenge: making one master list of seventeen beauties over 40. It's not as easy as you think; the TV landscape has changed a bit, and a few new strong contenders have recently entered their 40s, and a few of the previous list members have left the TV landscape. To make this list, a woman has to have been a regular or significant guest on a TV series or news program in 2007. So, after the jump, a list -- in no particular order -- of fifteen beauties who combine looks, maturity and grace to make one compellingly sexy package.
Thumbnails are with the list, but you can click on the gallery below to get a much better view of these lovely women. Then add your own choices in the comments.

One KITT driver has been named in this dueling
Knight Rider kerfuffle. If you remember from
last month, as series creator Glen A. Larsen has been slowly forming a feature film based on the series, NBC decided to zip in and create a 2-hour
movie/back-door pilot to steal the spotlight. Now, according to
The Hollywood Reporter, it's one step closer to being the first one out there -- taking a cue, it seems, from David Hasselhoff's previous hunt for Michael Knight's son. NBC has picked soap star
Justin Bruening to star as Knight's offspring.
Just like The Hoff years before, who joined the classic show after a stint on
The Young and the Restless, Bruening will make the jump into KITT from soap operas -- for the last four years, he's played Jamie Martin on
All My Children. Personally, I'm more interested to see if he follows Hasselhoff's path and dips into bikini babe television and international singing superstardom after the role, rather than what he does with this questionable project. With a star in place, the network, so far, is beating Larsen's movie project to the punch. So, onto the questions. Can this actor pull it off and draw KITT fans in? Will this steal the thunder and end/hurt the film? Do you care? When did
Knight Rider become such tasty subject matter that people would battle each other for it?

"The entire point of living in Connecticut or Westchester is to limit your exposure to people who are from Long Island and New Jersey," said one magazine editor who has been commuting from Westport, Conn., through Grand Central for over a decade. "That's why we live there, it's why we wear natural fabrics, and it's why we don't stucco our homes. Granted, there are a lot of people in Westport and Darien who grew up on the island and vowed to end all the ridicule by buying a first home here, but these are the people who wear Nicole Miller and practically strive out loud. As far as we're concerned, Long Island might as well be Barbados--fine for a vacation, but year-round is so not going to happen."
"Ahh, fuck youse," responded a Penn Station commuter through a mouthful of Auntie Anne's pretzel.

Sad news in the world of game shows. After a meager fifty years on the air, Bob Barker has decided to retire at the ripe old age of 83. I don't know what this means for the future of The Price Is Right. Losing Rod Roddy was a tough blow, but Bob too? Say it ain't so. Hopefully CBS will pass the baton to someone equally kitschy like Wink Martindale or Bob Eubanks. If Billy Bush or Danny Bonnaduce are tapped to be his replacement, I think we'll have no other option than to declare a nation-wide boycott. Unfortunately, trying to predict the behavior of network execs is like trying to crack the code to Plinko: it just won't happen. Either way, I think it's fairly apparent that whoever lands the gig will be earning exactly one dollar more than the runner-up.

Turning once again to our trusty database of nearly three hundred VHS antiques, each of us poured over titles, taglines, and cover art, selecting our own top ten in each category. And just to show that we aren’t horror VHS snobs, each of us also chose ten titles, tag lines, and covers that didnít fit our conception of what it takes to draw the fickle fright fan in—those half-baked marketing messages that just don’t inspire the urge to pop in the tape. And so, for the final day of our month-long tribute to the marvels and miscues of unheralded VHS horror, we thought it appropriate to offer up our opinions, not on the films themselves, but the containers they came in.
