You have to wonder if Sony Online Entertainment was so co-dependent during the development of the Champions of Norrath games that they had to abandon the successful series when partner Snowblind Studios was bitten by the superhero bug. Instead of leveraging EverQuest's popularity for the launch of the PlayStation 3, SOE decided to stick with their more generic Untold Legends setting, which debuted on the PSP nearly two years ago. But with its 18-20 hours of gameplay, lack of SIXAXIS support, and all of three pre-customized characters to choose from, Dark Kingdom ends up being little more than a rushed launch title, not the next-gen Norrath many people were hoping for.
- IGN (65/100) wants more PS3 and less PSP: "Apart from the repetitive combat system, there's a ton of gameplay issues that you'd hope would've been fixed with the transition over to the PS3. Load times are surprisingly long when you're accessing new levels. Rocks and boxes, as well as hills or background objects can cause your character to freeze in mid-jumping animation for at least five or six seconds. You'll also run into a lot of camera problems during combat, where the camera will unexpectedly zoom in or out during a fight."
- GameSpot (60/100) thinks Dark Kingdom is ill-suited for looters: "Gear lust is one of the more prominent driving forces in dungeon crawlers, and it's here that Dark Kingdom comes up short. Pieces of armor with different names and radically different effects look identical on your character, limiting the joy of equipping new gear and seeing how it looks on your increasingly badass adventurer. Your character will use the same basic weapon, as well as most of the same combo attacks, from beginning to end."
- GameSpy (60/100) hopes Sony is planning to make better use of the PS3's storage capacity: "What surprises me the most about the whole pre-formed character shtick is how confining it seems for a next-gen console with the power of the PS3. Look at the character customization options in Oblivion and you might understand where I'm coming from with this. All that power and I only have three options to choose from?"

The bulk of Cliff Biffle's excellent first impressions takes apart the Eee PC's impressive streak of GPL violations, such as removing code attribution. But for our gear-glued brains, the more relevant issue is the nice yellow "warranty void if seal is broken or removed" sticker chemically bonded over the RAM upgrade slot. Say what? "Yes, you read that right: a computer manufacturer has decided that it voids your warranty to replace a DIMM."
The likely reason is the mini-PCI-express slot hidden under the door, which might be the site of a future SSD upgrade, since plugging something in deactivates the built-in SSD. On the upside, according to Cliff, the warranty-voiding sticker schtick is unenforcable under the 1975 Magnuson-Moss Act. But, forcing them to not enforce that warranty clause would probably take more work than a $400 laptop's worth. Either way, it's a bit shitty on their part. [Cliff Hacks Things]

And...she was doing so well.
20 years ago today, during a broadcast of a Dr. Who episode on WTTW channel 11 in Chicago, a video pirate took over the airwaves dressed as Max Headroom (remember him?). Wearing a mask and standing in front of a moving background, the video pirate rambled for a couple minutes in a tough-to-understand voice and then voluntarily went off the air. Who was this prankster, and what was he trying to accomplish?
Good question. No one knows who he was or what the point of the broadcasts were (it was actually the second of the evening, with the first being a shorter clip of the same video broadcast during the evening news on a different channel). It's not like there was a message really, either. The ramblings are pretty tough to make out, and when you do they don't make a whole lot of sense.
That's not to say that it was brushed off as not that big a deal; the FCC actually launched an investigation trying to figure out just who this Max Headroom character was to no avail.
How exactly did he do it? An article from the November 24, 1987 Chicago Sun-Times explains it thusly:
"It's pretty apparent it was local," said Robert Strutzel, WGN director of engineering. Strutzel explained that the intrusions could have come from a high-rise apartment or a roof between the WGN transmitter on the Northwest Side at 2501 W. Bradley and its antenna atop the Hancock Building.
"It's not the kind of thing that's done by somebody in his basement," Strutzel said. "It's sophisticated microwave equipment at pretty high power levels to overcome our installation. And the room for error is very small."
Commercial-grade equipment of this sort would cost around $25,000 and could be carried in a few suitcases, he said - or the equipment could be rented.
You've gotta assume that it'd be next to impossible to do something like this today with cable and satellite companies controlling how people get their TV in most places, but it could probably still be done to people getting stations over the air in major metropolitan areas. You'd just hope if someone did it today they'd pick a costume with more cultural staying power, no? [

Bernie Lootz (William H. Macy) is the unluckiest guy in Vegas. From a failed marriage to an estranged son to a lost cat, everything Bernie touches turns bad.
Once upon a time, Bernie was a troubled gambler with markers all over town, including a big tab at the Shangri-La casino run by his friend Shelly Kaplow (Alec Baldwin). When Bernie couldn't pay the debts, Shelly saved Bernie's life by covering them, but then disabled Bernie by kneecapping him, causing Bernie to walk with a limp. Also, Shelly made Bernie work the floor of the Shangri-La, allowing Bernie the chance to pay off his debt day by day over the course of many years.
Shelly recognized that Bernie's luck was so bad it was contagious, so Shelly made Bernie the casino's "cooler". All it takes is Bernie's mere presence at a hot table to kill the winning streak. If he should so much as touch the dice, you’re looking at the Las Vegas version of a nuclear winter.
As The Cooler opens, Bernie is just days away from fulfilling his debt to Shelly when he meets Natalie (Maria Bello), a new cocktail waitress at the Shangri-La. Natalie sweeps Bernie off his feet, and after a night of much-needed raucous sex, Bernie is in love.
When Natalie starts to love him back, Bernie’s luck starts to change. Feeling good for the first time in years, Bernie can’t wait to leave Las Vegas, with the woman of his dreams and move on with his life.
Unfortunately for Bernie, Shelly can’t afford to lose him, especially since the partners of the Shangri-La have sent in Larry Sokolov (Ron Livingston) to shake up the place. Just itching to take over, Sokolov sees the hidden potential in the Shangri-La. He envisions a new, slick palace with three floors of gaming, an entertainment center and a roller coaster – everything Shelly’s beloved "old school" casino is not.
Sokolov's new plan would leave no place for Buddy (Paul Sorvino), the aging singer and lead attraction of the Shangri-La’s Paradise Lounge. Instead, Sokolov would like to hire Johnny Capella (Joey Fatone), Vegas’ answer to Harry Connick Jr. and one of the hottest acts on the strip.
Under increasing pressure from Sokolov and fearful that his beloved hotel and his old ways are about to be history, Shelly becomes very desperate, willing to do anything to hang on to Bernie and his cooling abilities, which have recently become shaky, ever since Natalie opened her heart to Bernie. Due to Bernie’s new change of luck, the Shangri-La loses close to a million dollars in one night.
Unfortunately Bernie is brought back to earth when his estranged son Mikey (Sean Hatosy) rolls into town with his pregnant girlfriend Charlene (Estella Warren). Mikey cons his father into giving him $3,000. Instead of using the money towards the baby, Mikey uses it by gambling at the Shangri-La, but is caught with loaded dice at Shelly’s craps table. Everyone knows that cheating at Shelley Kaplow’s casino can bring deadly consequences. With Mikey’s life on the line, Shelly knows he has Bernie right back where he wants him, under his control.
With Mikey in his grip, Shelly knows he has Bernie right back where he wants him, under his control. Thinking he’ll never get out of Vegas, Bernie asks Natalie to leave him for a better life. Natalie refuses to be rejected, and her actions lead to a violent confrontation with Shelly, who forces Natalie to break up with Bernie.
Ultimately, Bernie and Natalie find themselves in an impossible dilemma, one that can only be solved with love, commitment and a little bit of luck.

GameDaily has up an article grading the current and next-gen consoles on their past and (apparently) future performance. Ratings come with an explanation, which is good because some of them seem just a bid dodgey. Only a B+ for the PS2? Really? From the article: "Considering the competition, the PS2's $129.99 price tag seems downright diminutive. The slim PS2 comes sans fan (meaning potential overheating for long-winded players) but the compact design makes it a must-have for anyone with limited space in the entertainment center. The DualShock 2 is arguably one of the best game controllers of all time and extras can be snapped up for a mere $20 for head-to-head or online multiplayer action." The Aeropause blog has a follow up on the ratings, giving you another perspective on the same consoles.

Mac computers, according to Gregg Keizer (computerworld.com), “are the most reliable and its support the most dependable of the five top [computer] vendors. In fact, Keizer reports that in its annual report on reliability, Rescuecom, “a national chain of computer service shops,” found that Apple “blew away the competition this year by posting a score of 51% higher than next-best Lenovo.” The score, explains David Milman, CEO of Rescuecom, “takes into account not just the quality and reliability of the equipment but also the quality of service.”

global shortage" thing gets worked out. Furthermore, he stated that its current priority was to "deliver as many consoles as it could to existing markets," but we're still betting that these things will be a
coveted commodity this holiday season.

Microsoft pulled a fast one on Sony by launching its Xbox 360 without a built-in HD DVD player and keeping costs down. Since then, the PS3?s Blu-ray support has seen the format take a slim lead in the HD disc showdown.
