Upstart publisher D2C Games, founded by former EA executive and Madden originator Scott Orr and tech expert Bart Besseling have announced that it has received $6 million in investments, led by Rubicon Venture Partners and 755 Capital Partners, to further its efforts on delivering digitally distributed social games.
Profiled in March by Gamasutra, D2C says it aims to partner with other companies to publish games on multiple platforms, including PlayStation 3, PSP, Wii, Xbox 360, PC and 3G Mobile via direct download.

Despite being directed by a Yank, Death at a Funeral has a very British flavour. In fact, at times it reminded me of nothing less than an extended episode of Fawlty Towers, minus the manic genius of John Cleese. The film begins slowly, with occasional low-key laughs widely spread. However, it then does something too few comedies achieve: it builds momentum. The closer we get to the end credits, the faster and more furious the jokes come, until they're tumbling all over one another. The film's climax is nothing short of hilarious. And Death at a Funeral doesn't discriminate when it comes to the type of humor it embraces it. Everything is in there, from physical hijinks to verbal repartee to naked man jokes to drugs and gross-out stuff.

At the Develop Conference Joystiq had the opportunity to sit down with Rhianna Pratchett, script writer and story designer for Heavenly Sword. They discuss the story of the game, her inspiration, the role of storytelling in video games and, among other things, her dad's (author Terry Pratchett) influence on her work.
Joystiq: I was going to ask, what do you as a writer think of people who skip cutscenes?
Rhianna Pratchett: They should be flayed alive! Only joking. It's horses for courses, isn't it? I personally, never skip cutscenes, because I wouldn't want to miss any part of a game's story. I mean would you go and see a movie then close your eyes and cover your ears every half an hour? Actually that's pretty much what I wanted to do with Crank through the entire movie! But that's a different story! I say, skip cutscenes if you like, but don't complain that you don't understand the nuances of the story. Having said that, I think a good writer actually tries to embed the story in the interactive narrative as well as cutscenes. In Overlord there's a lot of narrative that doesn't stop gameplay and I think that's very important.
