(InfoWorld) - Google has started to provide video clips in Google News, a feature it had been widely expected to add to its article search and aggregation site and which Yahoo and AOL already offer in their news sites.
"We're showing related news videos along with our news articles to give you a broader spectrum of info available," a Google staffer announced Tuesday in the Google News blog.
Google News is adding the feature through a collaboration with the company's YouTube video sharing site. The clips will come from channels that video news producers have set up on YouTube. Plus, with the YouTube video-playback technology, Google News users will not have to download any clips, and they'll be able to view the videos in any browser, according to Google.
"What we're announcing today is a test feature within Google News. We're beginning with a small group of partners who have news content on YouTube, and we're starting with a limited amount of content," said Google spokesman Gabriel Stricker in an interview.
"While we're starting out as a test, we hope going forward to access the thousands of content providers who use YouTube to reach a broad global audience, especially those who focus on news," Stricker added.
For now, Google will feature videos in the U.S., U.K., and Ireland editions of Google News. Video providers include CBS, Reuters, and a number of local Hearst TV stations, the company said.
Last May Google News Product Manager Nathan Stoll said that news video was an area the company would "like to make progress in."
"It's true that lots of publishers have asked us about our plans, whether or not we're planning [to include video] because they'd like to get added traffic to their video content. There's certainly a need out there," Stoll told IDG News Service.
Tuesday's announcement fits within the company's larger universal search initiative, which seeks to integrate links from its different engines within search results.
For example, in its main Google.com Web search engine, Google already collates results from its Images, Video, Maps, and News specialty search engines, if warranted by the query.
The news videos will play in their entirety right on the Google News page, a different approach from news articles and photos, for which the site only provides headlines, text snippets, and thumbnail images. To access an entire article and view photos in their original size, Google News users have to click on over to the site where they appear.
Google indexes articles and photos from the Web without necessarily obtaining permission from their publishers. Although this practice has been challenged in court as copyright violation in the U.S. and abroad by some news organizations, Google maintains that it is protected by the fair use principle. Many publishers actually encourage Google to index their material in Google News because they find they benefit from the traffic the site sends them.
In the case of the Google News videos, the approach is different because the clips have already been uploaded to YouTube by their owners, granting YouTube permission to stream them.
A huge hit at this year's SXSW, Hannah Takes The Stairs is an indie film with a cast consisting of other indie filmmakers Mark Duplass and Andrew Bujalski.

Where others use watercolors, one man uses metal. This artist (if you know his name, hit the comments) re-creates masterpieces using nothing but nails. The process appears to utilize a computer grid to map dots onto plyboard—we're betting a projector and pencil is used—after which the artist nails thousands of metallic dots onto his "canvas." He's the Monet of metal, in a sense, with yet another trick up his sleeve—toothpicks.

One of Shaun of the Dead’s more compelling aspects is Shaun’s resolute ordinaryness. His tactics are unexceptional, so he’s a useful proxy with which you share the same ideas and fears. When he reconfiguring his priceless LP collection as valuable ammunition against a growing tribe of zombies, you realize his hesitance and his intense paranoia, as well as the resultant outburst of triumph when he discovers that they’re capable of lodging in a zombie’s cranium with a proper whisk.
Simon Pegg’s Nicholas Angel is far more exceptional than Shaun. A much-heralded policeman-officer, his speech imparts stoic determination; when he speaks he’s short and to the point, saying nothing extraneous to his intent to sustain the law. And for all his responsible intentions, it is difficult to sympathize with him—he visits his ex-girlfriend prior to his relocation away from London in a scene that’s totally unnecessary, save for one of the most ingenuous cameos I’ve ever seen. Of course, he’s a caricature whose stoicism will crumble to the temptation to deliver clever puns (“Where’s the trolley boy?” “In the freezer.” “Did you say ‘cool off?’”) and dive through the air firing two pistols simultaneously, so although his extraordinariness alienates you he remains responsibly in service to good fun.
'Beautiful Light' takes you on a journey through a series of 3D images that have captured light in a beautiful and facinating way, all set to the music of 'Bellatrix' by Rene Gruss.

Really enjoy God of War? Then Gizmodo Buddy Ramon, who created the ultimate DS Lite Zelda mod and the ultimate Legend of Zelda Wii mod, has something for you. It's the, dare we say it, ultimate PSP God of War Mod (Mod of War).
There are red LEDs, golden chains (the game is Chains of Olympus), and a blood red and gold finish that adorns both the front and back. A lot of this stuff is hand sculpted as well. He's even throwing in a display case that looks like an old battle chest. The best part is that proceeds go to the Child's Play charity, which is Penny Arcade's charity to help out sick kids. What better way to play the upcoming God of War game than on this thing? [eBay - Thanks Ramon!]

The Palm Z Micro Plane is a lightweight flier controlled by infrared remote control. What's really awesome is the plane's bi-wing design and flaming paint job. Then there's the remote's tri-band functionality, allowing for three of the planes to fly in the same space, so you and your friends can trail one another under the dinner table and try to knock the planes out of the sky.
Since the Palm Z is made out of foam, you don't have to worry about crashes, either. Each flier will set you back over $40, though, and the controllers take six AA batteries. Cheap for an RC plane, but maybe not a tiny one. The planes include a lithium polymer battery inside that holds a ten minute charge for five minutes of flying. [Firebox via Shiny Shiny]
Monday night's ratings. FOX comes in first with Hell's Kitchen having 4.3/12. Not far behind in second was NBCs Dateline NBC having 2.7/8. Coming in third was CBSs CSI:Miami having 2.4/7. And coming in forth was NBC's Victoria Beckham: Coming to America (Special) having 2.3/7. You could consider CBS's Two and a Half Men as coming in third with 2.5/7, but it was a repeat.
Catch around after the jump, no cosmic questions today just things that look like a chart, but NOT as Borat would say.
