In celebration of Command & Conquer's 12-year anniversary, Electronic Arts has made the Gold version of the original real-time strategy game available for free download. The original game, first released in 1995, was developed by Westwood Studios and spawned a phalanx of sequels.
EA said it is providing the C&C Gold ISO disk image, which the company said would run on Windows XP if burned to a CD-ROM. You can visit the official Command & Conquer Web site for more information about the free download, the series and EA's C&C strategy for the month of September.

Found via TCJ.com, font designers and typographers discuss comic book lettering:
“I guess I see type innovation in comics so rarely that it baffles me that other methods have been adopted more readily—like the art, coloring and overall production—but lettering seems to wallow in old-school mediocrity.”

This just in: In some epiphany of clarity (and insanity, surely) EA/FilePlanet have decided that they'd like more people in on the Red Alert 3 beta. If you're a long-time fan of Command and Conquer or just someone who has a minute interest in real-time strategy games, go for it - you have nothing to lose. But hurry! Have you, for one reason or another, not bought a new-gen console yet? Well, it's perhaps understandable-there are plenty of PC-only gamers, and for good reason-the most graphics-intense, most gigantic (MMORPGs!) games can be found on PC. There are also some of us who are just poor. But you want a reason to hold that controller lovingly. And good games are certainly not just about top-notch graphics and processing. Just which controller you choose remains to be seen. Here are GotGame's "Jaw-Dropping Upcoming Exclusive Games: Reasons to Splurge on? (InsertConsoleHere)."
1UP's Matt Leone writes about what to expect from Leipzig's Games Convention:
"Far Cry 2 vs. Crysis: Now that Crysis -- the game from the makers of Far Cry that looks a lot like Far Cry -- has a release date, its Leipzig showing will be one of the last before the game ships, and we've confirmed that there will be new content on display at the show. But while EA has a nearly-complete game, Ubisoft will show Far Cry 2 -- the actual sequel from a new development team -- for the first time. With one of the minds that helped shape Splinter Cell Chaos Theory behind it, I'm excited to see what Ubisoft comes up with, and how the two offspring compare.
Rockstar Stepping Up: Rockstar announced a few days ago that the first PS3/360-gen Midnight Club will make its debut at the show, along with the Wii version of Rockstar Presents Table Tennis. In some ways, this makes for a convenient distraction from the recent GTA4 delay announcement, but with Rockstar having a low key presence at E3 in recent years, this splash of support for Games Convention is a pretty big deal. That, and I've always had a soft spot for the Midnight Club games, and it'll be interesting to see how Table Tennis makes the jump to Wii, considering it was the first game to use Rockstar's RAGE graphics engine (which is also being used for GTA4). Not to get too far ahead of ourselves (this is not a hint at any secret info, I promise), but if Rockstar was to ever port GTA4 to Wii, this first look at Table Tennis may offer some clues on how they would go about it."

What made these $100 headphones irresistible Apple store iPhone retail bait? If it was a sin to use white earbuds with a nano, it surely was a sin to use it with a $600 phonepod. They're also the only headphones to launch with the iPhone that explicitly work with the recessed headphone jack. They sound great, but they've got one flaw.
Pros:Listening to a frequency sweep, base came in more clearly and with more tactile oomph off the line, while slightly peaky on the high end. They were more punchy, and the earpieces (comes with several sizes) were comfy and stayed in while not picking up too much ear grease. More efficient, so louder at a given volume setting than stock buds. Better sound isolation. Cloth covered black cables were nice. Microphone built in for calls. Leather carrying pouch included.
Cons:Headphone jack stem is too tall. Unbelievably, no remote control button for play/pause, track skipping, or call accept/reject.
Verdict: If you're into the headphones for calling, instead of using a bluetooth headset or the handset itself, you'd better pass. If you find yourself using the iPod in the iPhone a lot, these might be worth it, but consider Belkin's $10 adapter that will allow all your old headphones to work with the iPhone, first.

(InfoWorld) - A subcontractor working for a company that processes and fulfills orders for the Disney Movie Club sold credit card numbers and other account information belonging to an unknown number of customers to undercover law enforcement agents.

The May 2007 incident has prompted Disney to send out letters to an unspecified number of customers informing them about the breach.
Disney did not respond to requests for comment about the incident. But Brad Van Duser, an Atlanta-based customer of the company's movie club, received the letter and made it available to Computerworld. The letter is dated July 6 and signed by John Flynn, vice president of online digital and directing marketing for Buena Vista Home Entertainment, a division of The Walt Disney Co.
In it, Flynn said the incident involved an employee at Alta Resources Inc., a Neenah, Wis.-based outsourcer working for Disney. According to Flynn, the employee sold credit card information including names, addresses, credit card numbers and expiration dates to law enforcement authorities in an undercover sting operation. Flynn said Disney had been assured that card security codes, such as the CVV code, had not been compromised in the incident.
"Law enforcement officials have informed us that there is no indication that your information was used to make improper purchases or sold to anyone other than federal law enforcement agents," Flynn said in his letter. "Nevertheless, in an abundance of caution, we have informed representatives of Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover of these events."
The letter urged recipients to contact the financial institutions that issued their credit cards if they had any questions regarding their accounts. But it did not mention any free credit monitoring services, an option many companies have offered in similar situations.
Van Duser said he was surprised by the incident. "As a customer, what surprised me the most was that even after all of the security breaches reported in the news recently that a large, reputable company like Disney had not taken steps to thoroughly protect my credit card information," he said in an e-mail. "And then when the breach occurred, they didn't offer a credit monitoring or other service."
The Disney incident is the latest in a seemingly endless stream of breaches being disclosed by major companies this summer. Just this week it was disclosed that Kingston Technologies Inc., a maker of computer memory technologies, sent out letters to about 27,000 customers in connection with a September 2005 data breach that the company did not discover until recently. Western Union made a similar disclosure, announcing that it was notifying about 20,000 customers of a potential compromise of their personal data following the discovery of a database intrusion.
Such incidents have heightened consumer concerns and pushed several states to consider or enact laws requiring retailers and other entities handling credit card data to implement safeguards for protecting the data. One of the most closely watched of these laws is California's proposed AB 779 legislation, which would require breached entities such as Disney to disclose more details about security breaches, including a description of the categories of personal data that might have been compromised. In addition, the law would also hold breached entities financially liable for the costs incurred by banks and credit unions to notify customers of a breach and to subsequently block and reissue cards.
Looks amazing....
