The Department of Homeland Security improperly awarded a half-billion-dollar, no-bid contract in 2003 to a little-known company to maintain thousands of X-ray, radiation and other screening machines at U.S. border checkpoints, incorrectly designating the firm a disadvantaged small business,...

An Italian circuit court ruled Friday that reporting gossip in Italy will be illegal "unless it helps make a larger point about the figure in question." The new rules will "apply only to television, print and radio media." Whoa, and this is the country that gave us the word 'paparazzi.' [Hollywood Reporter]

Some two years after the 'next generation' of console games began, I've finally had a 'next-gen' experience. I've never met a BioWare game I didn't like (even liked Jade Empire , if you'll recall), and the much anticipated, hotly discussed Mass Effect is my game of the year ... which is not to say it's perfect. Gamers hoping for crystalline purity will be disappointed by, among other things, graphical pops, lengthy load times, and some occasionally stupid AI. It doesn't matter. Warts and all, this voyage to the edge of the galaxy and back is some of the best storytelling I've ever experienced in a game. It's like living a movie, a good one, where you decide the ending in a deeply meaningful way. Read on for my impressions of humanity's first steps onto the galactic stage.

1UP's Kathleen Sanders wrote on 11/16/2007:
"It's a big, big show for you guys this week -- you might even call it massive... get it? Good. That's where we start. I talk with other Mass Effect players Bryan Intihar, Jennifer Tsao, and Mike Nelson; we all agree that it's a great game, but HOW great is still up for thorough nit-picking."
"Our own Ryan O'Donnell is a big fan of the polarizing medieval parkour game Assassin's Creed. He gathered the reviewers on this one: Crispin Boyer, Michael Donahoe, and Andrew 'Skip' Pfister to discuss the finer points of Altier's controversial adventure."

Throwing darts has never been this fun. Not only do you get the satisfaction of hitting a bullseye if your aim is true, but as soon as you score, this supremely confident blond encourages you, crying out in ecstasy the inexplicable phrase, "Young girl, bullseyes! Wonderful!" Even though it is a bit misogynistic for our taste, it's just goofy enough to get a conversation going. Why didn't the creators of this groundbreaking invention depict a man with a bullseye on his crotch? Maybe that's next, with the hapless plastic victim blurting out the exclamation, "Old man, ballbuster! Blow it out your ass!" [Weird Asia News]

Gameplayer are reporting on the exact time that the Gears of War 2 review embargo lifts for all the major sites. And have looked to get the excitement building with a range of Gears related reads.
Ripten writes: "Let's get one thing straight before proceeding: I hated the original Far Cry. It was a long, soul sucking siege in a Hawaiian shirt that would have made Mother Theresa shank a kitten. So when I heard about Far Cry 2 being developed, my first thought was "Bloody hell, didn't they play the last one? They should know better." Then I saw the first screens and instantly knew it would be different.
Far Cry 2 is a sandbox title that throws you into the heart of Africa with the echoes of its former and current strife lending a subtle air of credibility to its storyline. As a merc, you are tasked with taking the head of a local arms dealer/terrorist/warlord by the name of The Jackal. No, not the real Carlos the Jackal, but I got over it. I suppose terrorists don't really insist on image rights or intellectual property infringement."

"Battles rage here on IGN stars...After the conclusion of a hard-fought Hero Showdown between Link and Cloud, Hyrule's defender emerged victorious. Where do you go from an epic battle such as this? Well, staying in the world of games, we decided to get our hands considerably dirtier and visit a pair of gritty fellows who kill with precision and move in the shadows - namely Solid Snake and Sam Fisher, the heroes of Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell, respectively. It's time to see these two step out of the shadows and square off, so let's see what happens. You determine the winner...
So who will emerge from the shadows and triumph? Will it be Tom Clancy's poster boy with the tri-glow visor or the silent but deadly Silent Snake? This time, console loyalty is out the window. Will it be yet another popularity contest or will voters take each fighter's strengths into account..."

These shots originated over at Gadgetzone.nl, where they wonder aloud whether this is or isn't an upcoming iPhone Nano. Their source "implores" them that it really is the iPhone Nano and it originates inside Apple, but unless Apple's security broke down horribly between when the regular iPhone was in development and now, it's pretty unlikely. What is likely—and is also what Gadgetzone thinks—is that these pictures are of a Chinese knockoff MP4 player. You know what tells us that this isn't a real Apple piece of hardware? The cellphone charm tie slot on the bottom right, next to the headphone jack (after the jump). The real iPhone doesn't have it. [Gadgetzone via Unwired View]

Using motion capture, a computer records your pen strokes and places them real-time within the scene. This motion capture is finalized as a 3D image file and then sent through the Rapid Protyping process. A laser hardens liquid plastic 0.1mm at a time, and in a few hours you have a chair that will shock/impress/probably kill your friends. Awesome. Hit the jump for pictures and a video of the entire process. And maybe some brilliant commenter can explain to us why the girl on the right draws slower than her sketch appears...maybe the motion cap is feeding faster than the video? – Mark WilsonThanks Mr. JustElite!
The movie is a dramatisation based on a combination of real events, rumours, urban legends and the imaginations of the scriptwriter - as the movie makes clear. In one scene featuring Howard Devoto (played by Martin Hancock) having sex with Wilson's first wife, the real Devoto, an extra in the scene, turns to the camera and says "I definitely don't remember this happening". The fourth wall is frequently broken, with Wilson (who also acts as the narrator of the movie) frequently commenting on events as they occur directly to camera, at one point declaring that he's "being postmodern, before it's fashionable".

Kind of like To Catch a Predator, except a little more uncomfortable and way more irrelevant to anyone, the ABC News affiliate in Chelsea, NY decided on Monday that it was their civic duty to find the MC from the once-prasperous hip-hop group and shame him into paying a $19,000 recording studio debt accrued during the recording of Pras' solo not-platinum album. Hard-nosed reporter Tappy tracked Pras Michel down at Rutgers University and questioned the artist about the tardy payments. (...)

Capcom has revealed that a new Bionic Commando is in the works, and we've got the exclusive details.
Could this be Capcom's Earth Shattering announcement?
"Released in 1988, the original Bionic Commando introduced a novel grappling hook mechanic into a stagnating side-scrolling 2D platformer genre. While the Capcom-developed game was highly regarded (and even named as one of GameSpot's Greatest Games of All Time), the franchise has been dormant outside of a 1992 Game Boy version and a 1999 Game Boy Color pseudo-sequel.
That's about to change, as Capcom has revealed to GameSpot that it is developing a new Bionic Commando game for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Simply called Bionic Commando, the new game will bring back the original game's hook (pun intended), with players able to use the main character's bionic grappling arm not only to navigate levels but to take out enemies at close range, rappel down sheer surfaces, or toss objects (like cars) at enemies."

For those of you who worship at the alter of Playstation, life is about to get more bearable. Its name is Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, and it will be available to download for free on October 24th. The move is an effort to keep thumbs from atrophying after the long hiatus between GT4 and the new prologue installment, due out in stores December 13th (at least in Japan).
The launch is coinciding with the Tokyo Motor Show, where a number of vehicles that have parts in the game will be revealed in the really-real-world the day before. Among the models already confirmed: the new Nissan GT-R and Mitsubishi Evolution X, plus 16 other manufacturers, including Ferrari and Alfa Romeo. Three new tracks are also set to make their debut in GT5, including Fuji, Daytona and Suzuka.
