But snubs 10GBase-T as too little, too late.Stephen Garrison, Force10's marketing VP, said part of the problem for 10Gig is that the upgrade steps are too big. In particular, buyers of chassis switches don't want an eight-port 10Gig linecard taking up a whole switch slot when they don't yet have uses for that many 10Gig ports.
So Force10 has developed a mixed-media linecard for its C-series resilient switches...

Sometimes the rumors prove true. As whispered about for months now and tipped pretty much everywhere the past few weeks,
Led Zeppelin have confirmed that they will indeed reform for a single performance in tribute to Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun, who
passed away late last year.
The surviving members of the Zep-- Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones-- have enlisted drummer Jason Bonham (son of John, who died in 1980) for one big gig at London's O2 Arena on November 26. They'll be joined by the Who's Pete Townshend, one-time Rolling Stone Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings, Foreigner, and-- in wayyyy over his head-- Paolo Nutini.
Proceeds from ticket sales go to the
Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund, an organization that awards scholarships.
Led Zeppelin were a flagship act on Ertegun's Atlantic label. Said Plant in a press release, "During the Zeppelin years, Ahmet Ertegun was a major foundation of solidarity and accord. For us he WAS Atlantic Records and remained a close friend and conspirator-- this performance stands alone as our tribute to the work and the life of our long standing friend."
This isn't the first Zep reunion with Jason. The four also performed at an Atlantic Records anniversary event back in 1988.
As previously reported, Led Zeppelin have another best-of,
Mothership, due November 13, while the soundtrack CD and DVD of
The Song Remains the Same lands November 20.

UCommon is a lightweight C++ library to facilitate
using C++ design patterns even for very deeply

Watching it is like having Meyer right next to you bouncing in his chair, saying “Man, did we hit the big time! Look at this! Look at this! What a film! Amazing!” There are a lot of marijuana cigarettes – reefers – smoked in this film, but watching a movie this charmingly hyperactive makes you wonder if you took some sort of stimulant instead.

With the premiere of The Office less than a month away, I doubt I?m alone in feeling the urge to jump for joy at the thought of the hour-long episodes we?re going to get in the first few weeks of the season. For those of you who aren?t good at math, that?s a whole extra half-hour of Office per week!

Gamasutra: We're getting a few years into the Xbox 360 lifespan experience; where do you think we are, technologically, in terms of the potential of the system, this generation?
* Rod Fergusson: That's a good question. I mean, I'm not the technical guy, so my ability to speak to where the engine goes is -- all I know is that with the two to three more years of optimization that we've had, we're much further along than I think, three years ago, we thought we were going to get.
So I think we're certainly approaching the upper end of it, as far as what developers are able to do with it, but just looking at all the demos we saw today -- ours and others -- it's clear that all the games just keep improving, and keep pushing that bar.
I think it's just a matter of, you know, it's a slow cycle; you only get a kick at it every couple years, and so it takes a while for people to see that progress. There will be games in development that won't ship until 2010, and I'm sure they'll look killer, just because, again, they'll have more time with it, and learn from mistakes and optimizations of others. So, I don't know; I think we're getting up there, but I still think there's room to grow.

A version of Pac-Man that administers electric shocks to gamers has been shedding light on how the human brain reacts to danger. Researchers at the Wellcome Trust Center for Neuroimaging at UCL found that the closer the gamers got to danger, the more impulsive was their response. "In effect, the less free will you will have," explained the study leader, Dean Mobbs.
Volunteers were asked to try and outrun a virtual predator who was stalking them round a maze. If he caught up with them, Bzzzzzt! they were given a shock to the hand.
If the ghostie was far away, players used the prefrontal cortex region of the brain, which deals with complex planning tasks. If the ghostie got up close and personal with Pac-Man, brain activity shifted to the periaqueductal gray, a more primitive area which governs quick-response survival mechanisms, such as fight, flight or freeze.
The research will be used to help scientists better understand anxiety disorders, such as panic attacks. [Guardian Unlimited]
