Welcome to the Thanksgiving edition of
The Write Stuff! Thanksgiving is always rough on a screenwriter. You're usually seeing a lot of friends and family, and while they (candied) yammer on about their accomplishments,
you have to start all of your sentences with: "We're still waiting to hear on that one..." and "Our agent says we're really close..." and "Grandma, let me explain the WGA strike to you one more time..."
But there is a great deal to be thankful for this year. On Monday, still happy and groggy from a weekend of gorging,
representatives from the WGA and the AMPTP will resume talks. Ideally, each side will come away happy and we can end this strike. From a personal note, my writing career was right on the verge of kicking into high gear when the strike was announced, and I certainly don't want to lose that upward momentum. And looking at the bigger picture, we're a month away from Christmas here. Who wants to see not just writers but everyone who works in and around the entertainment industry desperately struggling to pay the bills? The grips, the gaffers, the assistants, the dry cleaners...these people are out of work, too.
So send your good vibes to the negotiating table on Monday. And if you think there's nothing you can do, you're wrong. You can electronically sign
this petition to the AMPTP, which starts: "We, the undersigned, fully support the strike of the Writers Guild of America, and agree with the WGA's stated goals of obtaining just and fair compensation regarding revenues generated through "new media". The petition currently has 57, 695 signatures, which is extremely impressive. Won't you add yours?

Film Threat's Frigid 50 is back. Last year, the list was topped by everyone's favorite Scientologists Tom and Katie. (Wait ... Is she one yet?) Luckily they've saturated the press so much lately with their wedding shenanigans that they remain on the list, just bumped down a few to number 10. The top spot goes to the natural choice - Scottish-hero-turned-anti-Semitic-raving-drunk -- Mel Gibson. It'd be tough to beat the man who, in one night, managed to offend a religion, be a slimy misogynist and drive while drunk.
While I don't think anyone could surpass Mel's 2006 flubs, the list holds some expected names as well as a few shockers. Although Jennifer Aniston is a surprise in the number two spot, her appearance on the list isn't as surprising as her follower, Borat. Beyond that quirky Kazakhstanian creation rests wild girl Lindsay Lohan, whose spot is extra-specially detailed with Eddie Murphy lyrics. Finishing off the top five is the lackadaisical tax payer, Wesley Snipes.
Unfortunately, the likes of Gibson-sympathetic Patrick Swayze and Lady in the Water survivor Paul Giamatti will have to try harder to get further up on the list. But even their showings at 49 and 50 were topped by Colin Farrell, who got a special icy place of 51 for acting in numerous bombs yet still having the money and media.
Go take a look. Did they miss anyone?

2U*U2 writes to mention an EWeek article about an entry in the Month of Kernel Bugs. John Ellch has discovered a critical vulnerability in the Broadcom wireless driver: a driver used in machines from HP, Dell, Gateway, and eMachines. From the article: "[The bug] is a stack-based buffer overflow in the Broadcom BCMWL5.SYS wireless device driver that could be exploited by attackers to take complete control of a Wi-Fi-enabled laptop. The vulnerability is caused by improper handling of 802.11 probe responses containing a long SSID field and can lead to arbitrary kernel-mode code execution. The volunteer ZERT (Zero Day Emergency Response Team) warns that the flaw could be exploited wirelessly if a vulnerable machine is within range of the attacker."

Yesterday the internet exploded with the news that the NPD Group would no longer be releasing monthly videogame sales data to the media. While it initially looked like the world may be at peace without sales data to fuel fanboy battles, the console wars will (for better or worse) be continuing.
The NPD Group is only halting the free data it gives out to general media. Outlets that pay for the data, like IGN, will continue to receive monthly sales figures. NPD told us it was a business decision to protect the research firm's interests.
So, not to worry. You can still look forward to monthly console wars here on IGN.

With his trademark charm and wit, Michael Moore sets off on a journey to the heart of the country hoping to discover why the American pursuit of happiness is so riddled with violence. From a look at the Columbine High School security camera tapes to the home of NRA President Charlton Heston, from a young man who makes homemade napalm with "The Anarchist's Cookbook" to the murder of a six-year-old girl by another six-year-old, this is an alternately humorous and horrifying look at firearms abuse, destined to leave audiences dreading - but expecting - the next breaking news report about a homegrown assassin with a constitutionally-protected Uzi.

The locus of attacks, he says, is shifting from the computers themselves to the transactions between them, particularly B-to-C activity.

The Group Communication Service (jGCS) intends to
provide a generic API for applications that need
group communication primitives, such as virtual
synchrony or atomic broadcast. It is a Java based
common API to several toolkits such as Spread,

Changes:
The main changes made to the jGCS packages are
mainly in the bindings,

binding now supports
closed and open groups and can be configured to
discover the addresses
of group members from an external process and send
messages to that

important bugfixes. The jGCS implementation of

several bugfixes.

Just what has
Tara Jane O'Neil gotten herself into now? The former Rodan, Sonora Pine, and Retsin member turned solo artist extraordinaire has a new book/CD project and a brief tour besides.
Wings. Strings. Meridians.: A Blighted Bestiary is a 96-page book of artworks and such from the page of Ms. O'Neil (a visual preview of the stuff is available
here), coupled with a 15-track CD-- titled
Connoisseur Collage-- of O'Neil rarities, demos, and a cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye". The songs on
Collage, as O'Neil pointed out in an e-mail, are "all pretty unreleased." What's more, 100 extra special copies of
Wings will come with three silkscreened prints, which we in the biz often refer to as "limited edition bonus material."
The book/CD will be out in November courtesy of
Yeti Publishing's Square Roots Books imprint, with a release party/acoustic performance on the first of the month in Portland. That comes right square at the end of O'Neil's brief fall tour, kicking off this weekend. True, there's a couple New York shows in mid-November, too, but it's not a tour if you take two weeks off in the middle, is it?

Since we shocked and awed you yesterday with footage of our i-banker friend A.J., we've received mountains upon virtual mountains of emails asking for more. And what better way to find out more about a man, or at least what a man wants everyone to think of him, than a MySpace profile?
A.J. greets us with the headline, "Zoom Zoom", perhaps harking back to his more humble days when he drove a Mazda instead of the drop top Porsche featured in the Cain promo. He chose a blurry self portrait for his profile pic, although the modesty is belied by the luxurious gold frame on the mirror. He has customized the page with a classy black background and sets the mood with a stylish, albeit predictable, Thievery Corporation tune. We learn that, to no surprise, his favorite films and books include Glengarry Glen Ross, Wall Street, Art of War and Machiavelli.
Now we know more about A.J., but what little bit that the MySpace profile offers has only served to whet our appetite. Can you shed any more light on A.J.? We're all ears.
