Given the fact that most human hearing maxes out at 20kHz, it seems a bit silly for Sony to be squeezing an 80kHz driver into their new "Altus" MDR-D777 headphones, and the assorted hyperbole they're bestowing on the 'phones seems a bit excessive for a pair of $150 cans, but Sony has been known to bust out a decent set now and then, so we won't hold it against them too terribly much. Beyond that 80kHz craziness the Altus headphones sport 40mm HD drivers, which sit parallel to your ears, along with an ambient sound-in switch, allowing you to switch between an open diaphragm that lets noise in and opens up the soundstage, and a closed diaphragm that isolates the listener. The Altus units sport aluminum earcups, and while there ain't no Ethiopian sheep leather to be seen here, they look comfortable enough, and should be out this November -- all prepped to annoy your dog with that excessively high upper register.

BOLD MOVES: THE FUTURE OF FORD A new documentary series. Be part of the transformation as it happens in real-time
In another highly-necessary shopping piece in the Times Styles section (a piece that we could not face until now), the body modification expert Alex Kuczynski discusses shredders. The office kind, not the Van Halen kind. True to form, she used shredders as a lens to teach us about Alex Kuczynski.
Following her patented formula, in the first two paragraphs we learn more about her than her subject matter. Here are things we learn about Alex Kuczynski in the first 430 words, followed by the what we learn about shredding machines.
What the homeless are going to do with 200 copies of her book Beauty Junkies is anyone's guess. We suggest a bonfire! But the article wasn't all Alex all the time. We also learned this about shredders.
Well, a 7:1 ratio isn't too bad for the Kucz! Maybe next week we can glean a couple more Alex Kuczynski factoids as seen through the lens of buying a Le Creuset casserole dish.

While we could've devised a slightly more compressed moniker, the 2nd Stand-Alone Power Assist Suit is shaping up to help nursing personnel take a load off their backs while helping patients get around (and work on their biceps) a lot easier. Stronger and more compact than its predecessor, the 66-pound full body contraption is designed to help nurses and home caretakers with lifting their patients who cannot provide any substantial muscular assistance. While it currently only handles patients up to 180 pounds, it cuts the amount of force necessary to get them up and about by 50 percent, and integrated "micro air pumps" aid the patient in busting a move (or just getting to the lavatory) once they're strapped in. Powered by portable batteries, built-in sensors determine which movements are being made, and the pumps are then inflated and deflated in patterns desgined to assist the typical walking, lifting, and moving motions. Although it can only muster about half an hour of assistance, creators are determined to improve on the current model in order to help rehabilitating individuals regain the strength required to move sans machinery -- much like Activelink's motorized jacket. While the team couldn't pinpoint a completion date, we can envision these popping up in quite a few wards not already stocked with superhuman robotic assistants handling the hoisting.

Each week, Intern Alexis demonstrates what we know to be true: That the Weddings and Celebrations section of the 'New York Times' is for faux-starry-eyed future-divorcees who are setting themselves up for current social status and future windfall divorce settlements. Here's to them!
It was the battle of the Mayflower descendants this week, as two separate couples (Daisy Wademan & Luc Dowling and Shanon Iorio & Robert Collins) included descendants of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, pilgrims who were present and accounted for on the Mayflower. Westinghouse is putting on the good foot for the big CEDIA show that starts this week, rolling out three 1080p LCD TVs in its new line of TX series displays. At the low end is the 42" TX-42F430S, and it's complemented by the 47" TX-47F430S and the 52" TX-52F480S. So what's the big deal about this? These TVs bring along everything you need, including an integrated ATSC/NTSC/ClearQAM tuner, and built-in stereo speakers complete with a subwoofer. The company's also making an effort to improve its picture quality, sharpening up some of the specs that make a difference.
For one thing, the 52-inch set has lowered its response time to 6.5 ms, and Westinghouse is claiming a 5000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, which might be closer to 1000:1 in the real world. Another impressive spec is its four HDMI inputs. Compare the rest of the specs below.

We're not sure how much we'd want to use those built-in speakers and subwoofer, but these are probably not aimed at the high-end home theater market, anyway. In fact, the price is right for these three TVs, with the 42-inch set retailing for a mere $1599, the 47-incher is $1799 and that 52-inch model tops the line at $2999. The company didn't mention when these three 1080p TVs would be available.
Lady Tigers meet Gallup in an August 25,2007 soccer game at Anaya Field. Coach Yancy Ranspot talks about the game.In a statement made at the Congresso Internacional Sociedade e Governo Electronico (CONSEGI) 2008 conference, representatives from three of the four countries that appealed against the 1 April vote to approve OOXML as a standard - Brazil, South Africa and Venezuela - said they are "no longer confident" in the ability of both the International Organization for Standardisation (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to be vendor-neutral and open when it comes to setting technology standards."What is now clear is that we will have to, albeit reluctantly, re-evaluate our assessment of ISO/IEC, particularly in its relevance to our various national government interoperability frameworks," according to the statement by the countries, which also included Ecuador, Cuba and Paraguay. "Whereas in the past it has been assumed that an ISO/IEC standard should automatically be considered for use within government, clearly this position no longer stands."The statement was posted on the blog of Aslam Raffee, the chairman of the South African government's Open Source Software Working Group. CONSEGI is a South and Latin American government open-source conference; it was held this year in Brasilia, Brazil.Despite their concerns, however, the countries will not pursue their appeals against the decision by the organizations to move forward with the publication of ISO/IEC DIS 29500 - the name for the current OOXML specification - as an international standard.Earlier this month, the ISO/IEC gave the green light to publish the current OOXML specification after organisation leaders rejected appeals from Brazil, India, South Africa and Venezuela to protest the vote that approved OOXML as a standard. The specification is expected to be published within the next few weeks after the standards bodies complete the final processing of the document, provided there are no further appeals against the decision. Ironically, it's developing countries like the ones that protested the vote that Microsoft was courting when it submitted OOXML to Ecma International, another standards body, in November 2005 in an effort to fast-track it through the ISO's standard-approvals process. Microsoft created OOXML as an XML-based document format for Office 2007, the latest version of its productivity suite. Office and Microsoft's Windows OS face competition from open-source and open standards-based software in developing countries, where it is often more cost-effective to use alternatives to proprietary software. At the same time, governments in those countries as well as in more mainstream markets increasingly are drafting mandates requiring IT departments to use only software based on open-standard formats. Prior to becoming approved as an open standard, OOXML's use in Office would preclude that suite from being on the list of acceptable technologies for many of these mandates. When Microsoft submitted OOXML to Ecma, another XML-based document format, ODF (Open Document Format), was midway through the ISO standards process. The ISO approved ODF as an international standard more than two years ago.The OOXML fast-track process and subsequent approval vote in the ISO was riddled with complaints that Microsoft acted unscrupulously, the standards process was not implemented properly and the specification approved was too unwieldy to implement. As a result, the national bodies of Brazil, India, South Africa and Venezuela filed protests.

Nigerian Musician has a unique sound! These first shots of the Motorola Rokr E8 from zol.com.cn shows the unique keypad that Moto went with. Instead of regular keys, they've got little nubs that need to be back-illuminated. When you're dialing, all the keys are lit; but when you're playing music, the numbers are dimmed and only the music controls are bright. This could be even greater if the keys' backlit images could change in the background, but it doesn't seem like the E8 is advanced enough to do that. [Zol.com via IDNES via Phonearena]
