The crazy machismo days of Maverick & Iceman look like they are coming closer to an end, especially with the latest word that the U.S. has commissioned its very own squadron of robotic MQ-9 Reaper drones.
These babies are about two times as fast as their Predator predecessor, thanks mostly to its new and improved 900-hp turbo-prop engine. And don't think that these planes will be pussyfooting around the Middle East doing surveillance; they can carry up to 14 satellite-guided Hellfire missiles that can cause some serious damage. They are scheduled to be deployed between this fall and early next spring. [Slashdot]
Two students talk about college life, and how to have fun ... Nothing could ever explain to me how someone with the access, reverence, and funding to make Gonzo could bury the thing in such a deep sludge of forrest-gumpized 60s nostalgia. It’s a drugged, feature length version of the obligatory, unnecessary pan past Nixon’s resigning head on the tube that smudges so many otherwise acceptable period movies. Can we have a tribute to Thompson that doesn’t need Time Life’s Greatest Flower Power Hits set over split screens of Iraq & Vietnam, Bush & Nixon, to get its juice? I wasn’t even an idea in my parents’ heads when RFK was gunned down, but even I feel the knee-jerk tug of heartstring when they set the footage to come on people now, smile on your brother — or whatever. Does anybody remember this happening, or are we all reacting to some collectively shared impression of a classic music video?
Though it ultimately drowns in its own expensive soundtrack, Gonzo isn’t a total waste. It does give us a good 20 minutes on Hunter Thompson’s coverage of the ‘72 Presidential campaign (fantastic!) and more than a few interviews with remarkable figures. Jann Wenner, Pat Buchanan, George McGovern, Ralph Steadman, Tom Wolfe, and Jimmies Carter & Buffett are given the respectful chance to tell their side of Hunter’s story at offices or studios, behind desks, or in front of windows. Only Sondi Wright, Thompson’s first wife, was filmed in front of a green screen, which was later replaced with explicit photos and footage of H.S.T.’s presumed infidelity, naked ladies and snide grimaces. Inexplicable, and a cruel joke.

This guy is a very good juggler.

Despite a slow entry into the market, Intel's mobile chips could dominate the space in the long run by offering value and software compatibility that competitors like Arm will find tough to match, according to an Intel official.
By building x86 architecture into mobile devices, Intel wants to build compatibility to standardize software use across PCs and mobile devices, said Pat Gelsinger, Intel's senior vice president, in a press event on Monday to celebrate the company's 40th anniversary.
After riding the wave of success for decades by putting x86 chips in PCs, Intel has put x86 into mobile devices with the Atom processor. The x86 compatibility on mobile phones will boost adoption of the chips for consumers looking to run applications on multiple devices, Gelsinger said.
Despite Intel's hopes, the company will have to compete against Arm, a chip designer that has a dominant presence in the mobile chip space and is now looking to challenge Intel by putting its low-power chips in servers.
"In our first foray into wireless devices, we were doing it with Arm. We said, 'Why are we building somebody else's architecture?' We realized that we can take Intel architecture -- x86 compatible -- to those power levels and cost levels. That's what we've proven with Atom," Gelsinger said.
Arm may be exponentially larger in the mobile space, but the lack of a standard software and hardware ecosystem could pose a problem for the chip designer, Gelsinger said. "You have numerous different Arm architectures, multiple architectural licensees that are compatible across Arm, and you have numerous fragmented different operating systems that run on it. There is no... ecosystem."
Arm didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
The cost of creating custom chips based on designs is also very expensive, which could create cost challenges for new chip manufacturers to enter the space, Gelsinger said. The move to manufacture chips in the 450-millimeter wafers will help Intel reduce manufacturing costs per chip and result in more efficient use of the resources, including water and energy, which could bring prices of the chips down.
Despite Intel's platform and scale advantages, it enters the mobile chip market where it has a minimal presence. It already suffered a major setback when Apple's CEO Steve Jobs last month said it would use technology from PA Semi, a company it acquired earlier this year, to develop system-on-chips for the iPhone.
Gelsinger said Apple's decision was disappointing, but he hopes the company would add Intel back to its mobile road map.
"People haven't been lining up outside ... asking us to deliver these products. We have to go earn this business. We have to do it with superior products."
Beyond Atom, Intel has new products on the horizon that reduce chip size and consume less power, Gelsinger said. The company is developing a mobile platform code-named Moorestown. The platform includes a system-on-chip code-named Lincroft, which is based on a 45-nanometer Silverthorne core, and puts a graphics, video, and memory controller on a single chip.
"Our strategic attempt ... is to take Intel architecture value proposition into the milliwatt range... something... that we've never done before," Gelsinger said. "We are committed to take it to 10 milliwatts."

Ubisoft has pulled the DS training game MindQuiz off the shelves after a complaint was received that the game contained an ?offensive word? to people with disabilities. The word was not mentioned in the original BBC story but if the game has been pulled, it had to have been pretty bad. Only the DS version was affected.

"Clarissa Explains It All" was a classic show that aired in the early 90s during Nickelodeon's Golden Era. Watching this intro brings back a lot of memories.

Here's where the samples on some of my favourite Daft Punk tracks came from. It's all legit, paid in full, above board. Still strange to hear though.

(InfoWorld) - Wikimedia Foundation's English-language site was accessible in China again on Friday, although its simplified Chinese-language site remained blocked.
China censors Internet content that it finds objectionable, usually political material that relating to Taiwan or Tibetan independence, the Falun Gong cult, and occasionally pornography. Although the Web sites of most Western news outlets are available, the British Broadcasting Corp.'s news site remains a noteworthy exception.
The English Wikipedia site has been available for various periods over the last three years, and has kept a record of those periods on its site.
"Wikipedia is such a popular Web site that almost every foreigner who visits China may try to visit Wikipedia pages. I believe someone at [the Ministry of Information Industry] or another government ministry realized what bad PR a Wikipedia block produces," said Jeremy Goldkorn, editor of Danwei.org, a Beijing-based media and Internet site.
"Once they had figured out the elegant solution of keeping the Chinese version blocked, and filtering out English Wikipedia pages about Tibet and other 'sensitive' subjects, they were happy to let us access the rest of Wikipedia," Goldkorn said.
While English Wikipedia was unblocked, Yahoo Flickr photo service remained accessible from China. However, most photos on the site were blocked and could not be viewed by Chinese users.
