Teresonic has brought out the Magus, a pair of compact, mid-range speakers, whose curved sides are a nod to classical instruments. "Have you ever wondered why there are no square violins, trumpets, or acoustic guitars?" says the president of Teresonic, Mike Zivkovic. "So why do they make square speakers?"
Because they're easier to make, of course. Teresonic's Magus speakers have a sensitivity of 98dB (1W/1kHZ/1m), a bandwidth of 60Hz-22kHz ± 3dB, and a power handling of 1-100 Watts.
Costing $ 3,985 for a pair of speakers, a pair of customized speaker stands retail for $385. [Press Release]

This year has seen not one but two movies about Miami vice. The first was Michael Mann's big-screen version of the 1980s TV series. The second is the documentary Cocaine Cowboys, a dizzying look back at the cocaine trade of the 1970s and '80s and how it affected the city of Miami, Florida. Directed by Billy Corben (Raw Deal: A Question Of Consent), Cocaine Cowboys explores Miami's cocaine trade from the inside, including recent interviews with the criminals, cops and citizens who were there when the one-time retirement community metamorphosized into the glamorous yet blood-soaked epicenter of the Medellin cartel's stateside operations. The turning point for the city, the film suggests, was the Dadeland Mall shootings of July 11, 1979, when Colombian males involved in the coke business were gunned down at a liquor store in broad daylight. The level of violence displayed in the machine gun slayings was unheard of in Miami before that day but from then on it became commonplace. Miami, in effect, became a war zone for years after that. A number of factors came into play that led to Miami becoming the murder capital of the U.S. during the 1980s due to the cocaine trade. Cocaine Cowboys focuses on two white Americans who made a fortune in the coke business, and illuminates how the trade literally made Miami the city it is today. The primary subjects are coke traffickers Jon Roberts and Mickey Munday. Jon, a brash New Yorker with Mafia ties, came south to avoid the "heat" from police only to find that he could make a fortune beyond his wildest dreams in the then "wide open" sleepy city of Miami. Jon was the business manager; transportation was handled by his foil, native Floridian Mickey (no Disney jokes, please). These guys brought in obscene amounts of cocaine into the U.S. through Miami during the '70s and '80s. But they were just part of a larger narco-trafficking network originating in Colombia, which used Cubans as its distributors. Panama, then under the control of strongman dictator Manuel Noriega, served as the cartels' bank. The Miami police department was besieged by corruption and lawyers got in on the act, too. Cocaine Cowboys recounts the fast, glamorous life enjoyed by the likes of Roberts, a man so filthy rich he buried millions of dollars in cash in his backyard. But as in any gangland rise-and-fall story, the good times come to an end. After the Dadeland Mall slayings the Lexington & Concord moment of the "cocaine wars" the Miami's murder rate tripled during the '80s to over 600 homicides a year. This drug-driven bloodshed prompted Time to brand Miami a "Paradise Lost." And the person suspected behind hundreds of these murders including Dadeland was an unlikely figure. The drug trade in Miami, we learn, was not lorded over by a man but rather a woman: Griselda Blanco, a.k.a. The Godmother/The Queen of Cocaine/The Black Widow. And, as recounted by her former henchman, convicted killer Jorge "Rivi" Ayala, she was a terrifying master who ruled through fear and unspeakable violence. She would think nothing of having anyone literally, anyone or anything near a target, including their wives, children and pets butchered along with whomever had wronged her. The film's most gruesome and shocking moments recall the numerous murders and attempted hits that Rivi and the various law enforcement personnel interviewed here connect Blanco with. Rivi speaks with chillingly calm candor about how he went from car thief to hitman, and his role in dozens of drug-related slayings. But Blanco remains the true monster of the piece. Cocaine Cowboys also delves into the more fascinating and less explored area of how drug trafficking affects legitimate businesses and local economies

Now that WiMax has been certified as a form of 3G mobile data infrastructure, Sprint Nextel is changing its tune about the WiMax network it plans to launch commercially in April.

Last year when Sprint was shopping around for a "4G" technology, it had a lot to say about how 4G would do something 3G networks couldn't. WiMax won out as its 4G network of choice. But in a keynote address Thursday at CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment in San Francisco, an executive of Sprint's WiMax business, Xohm, sang a different tune.
"I think we spend entirely too much time talking about the Gs," said Atish Gude, senior vice president of mobile broadband operations at Sprint. Last week, the Radiocommunication Sector of the International Telecommunication Union certified WiMax as a 3G technology, providing a seal of approval many governments require for carriers to deploy it. Wider deployment generally means lower equipment prices, which helps service providers.
That's not to say the carrier no longer wants to differentiate WiMax. In his presentation, Gude played up the wide band of spectrum Xohm will be able to use, which he said will cut down on delays for individual users the same way a multilane freeway can move faster than a two-lane highway even when the speed limit is the same. In the real world, a lot of people want to use the network at the same time, he said.
But more important is the business model of the two networks, Gude said, characterizing the traditional cellular business as more closed and controlled, while Xohm's business will tap into the dynamics of the open Internet. The company is opening itself up to partners for application development as well as connected devices, he said. The best known of these deals, announced in July, was an agreement with Google to develop a variety of Internet-based services.
Sprint hopes a wide range of devices, including cameras, media players, and in-car electronics, ultimately will connect to the WiMax network. Instead of Sprint stores, they will be sold in the most logical places for their device types, such as consumer electronics stores. The first devices to come for Xohm next year will be wireless cards for notebook PCs, which Gude expects to be sold in the computer departments of electronics stores.
The company will also have open API for third parties to develop services to run on the network. As an example, Gude envisioned a video portal that users could navigate using the five buttons traditionally found on video players. Xohm will probably charge for some of what it offers to third parties, but its aim is not to stifle innovation, he said.
Sprint isn't getting out of its cellular business now that it's starting Xohm -- which it expects to reach 100 million U.S. residents by the end of 2008 -- but seems to be looking at it in a different light now.
"We are a content distribution industry," Gude said. It's just that for most of cellular's history, all the content has been user-generated and consisted of talking.

Time travel is, well, a time-honored tradition in Hollywood with movies like Back to the Future, The Terminator, The Time Machine and the upcoming New Line film The Time Traveler's Wife, based on the bestselling novel by Audrey Niffenegger. The movie version of the novel was announced recently with screenwriter Jeremy Leven of The Notebook handling the adaptation duties, while Steven Frears (The Queen, Dirty Pretty Things) and director Robert Schwentke (Flightplan) are left to battle it out for helming duties. And now we can add some casting news to the mix as well.
According to TMZ (via Coming Soon), super-hot Rachel McAdams, star of Wedding Crashers, Red Eye and The Notebook, is in serious talks to star in the film as Clair, a beautiful art student who falls for Henry, a librarian with a problem: At random moments he disappears and travels through time to other parts of his life. Obviously, this causes a great deal of trouble for Henry and Clair as they struggle with children, jobs, friends and any semblance of a normal life. If she takes the role, this will mark McAdams' second go-round with screenwriter Leven after their work together on The Notebook.
No word yet on who will play time traveling Henry, but if producers are looking for any suggestions, I'll throw one out: How about casting McAdams' co-star from The Notebook Ryan Gosling in the role? Although Gosling might be a little busy these days seeing as he's appearing in at least four new movies over the next year, including director David Michael's The Other Side and The Last Face for director Erin Dignam. Still, casting these two actors together worked pretty well for The Notebook and I'm sure the duo could do wonderful things with The Time Traveler's Wife too.
What do you think, is Gosling a good idea?
