Someone call in Belgian detective savant Hercule Poirot; we got ourselves a mystery of Agatha Christie proportions. Here are the facts: Winona Ryder (fresh off her airport snafu) went to Madrid for a special Marie Claire event. The company entrusted the actress with a dress, shoes, and one hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars worth of jewelry

What better way to celebrate the end of the year's biggest shopping weekend than with 10 things you mercifully did not buy? The following gadgets and gimmicks, featured in the Holiday 2007 SkyMall catalog, prove without a doubt that the human race is going straight to Hell:
10. Chilled Shot Machine - $150 When it comes Jäger, I consider myself something of an aficionado, a snob really. I don't mind spending a little money to ensure that when I sit down to do shots, each and every one will be chilled to the ideal temperature. That way I know whether I'm on my first or my 12th, the experience will be rich and memorable.
9. Hot Dog Grill and Bun Warmer - $50 I understand some specialty kitchen appliances, like ice-cream makers, deep fryers and thin-slicing mandolines. But do we really need a $50 product that simultaneously mimics the microwave and the toaster to prepare a meal that has utterly zero gastronomical value? I mean, I want one, but do we really NEED this?
8. E-Z Chord Kit - $42 As a guitarist I'm offended by this one: instead of sitting down and learning G, C and D, you attach a $42 apparatus to your guitar that plays the chords for you. Even if it is ridiculously easy, how many chicks do you think you'll score with a handicapable guitar that tells the world you're not smart enough to do what Toby Keith somehow figured out?
7. Basho the Sumo Wrestler Table - $225 Basho isn't a gadget per se, but a coffee table in the shape of a large, mostly naked Japanese man spread-eagled on the floor kinda screamed Gizmodo to me. You will be happy to hear that he was crafted of "quality designer resin for display in home or garden." That'll scare away the chipmunks.
6. Freddie Mercury Action Figure - $45 I couldn't decide whether to laugh or cry when I saw this. Poor dead Fred, here with ball-jointed neck and articulated shoulders for your bending pleasure. A motion sensor (hidden God knows where) triggers a medley of classic Queen songs. And I hate to have to tell you, but there's also a Kurt Cobain figure. COURTNEY, YOU WHORE!!!
5. Trailer Hitch Stand and Chairs - $200 This has to be the funniest photo SkyMall has ever printed. There's no way to fake the glee on those tailgaters' faces. Mind you, this is not for all sportsfans: each seat has a weight limit of 250 pounds, and seats only come in green or blue. I feel like red should be mandatory, at least when shipped to Boston or St. Louis.
4. Animated Hitch Critters - $25 The only reason not to buy those hitch-stand chairs is that they would keep you from installing a motorized, light-up Hitch Critter. Isn't it cute how the deer waves "Don't shoot! Don't shoot!" as he sports an ironic target on his chest? Don't miss the dying fish or the "Duck!" duck, also with cheery red target. Man, I just love when my comedy and my killing go hand in hand.
3. 5.0 Digital Binocular Camera - $250 There's nothing terribly wrong with these silly digital-camera binoculars. In fact, I kinda like the idea of them. No, what I thought was frightening about this product was SkyMall's #1 sales bullet point: "BANNED IN SOME SPORTS ARENAS!" Super sweet! It'll make you the envy of all your friends, until it's wrested away from you at the entry gate.
2. Pre-Decorated Christmas Tree - $200 So it's come to this, has it? Our lazy society wants to revel in the Christmas spirit, as long as it doesn't involve such formerly festive activities as tree trimming? I never really thought of "getting into the spirit" as a hassle. I stand corrected. And one more thing: if it's going to come pre-decorated, shouldn't it at least be pre-decorated by someone with taste?
1. Alive Elvis Animatronic Robot - $300 Devoted Gizmodo readers know that we both worship and fear the animatronic Elvis, though it is without a doubt evidence of a society gone bad. We only have one final, haunting question: why does the robot King look so much like Rob Schneider?
Of course, the best way to view this one-way ticket to damnation is all at once, in a big scary SkyMall shopping cart:

The PlayStation is a 32-bit video game console of the fifth generation. It was first released by Sony Computer Entertainment in December 1994. The original PlayStation was the first of the ubiquitous PlayStation series of console and hand-held game devices, which has included successor consoles and upgrades including the Net Yaroze (a special black PS with tools and instructions to program PS games and applications), PS one (a smaller version of the original), PocketStation (a handheld which enhances PS games and acts as a memory card), PlayStation 2, a revised, slimline PS2, PlayStation Portable (a handheld gaming console), PSX (Japan only) (a media center, DVR and DVD recorder based on the PS2), and PlayStation 3. By March 31, 2005, the PlayStation and PS one had shipped a combined total of 102.49 million units, becoming the first video game console to ever reach the 100 million mark.

Click for big, big versionSo we weren't
duped after all. Bungie finally
posted (right on time at 2AM Pacific) that there's a slew of new
Halo things on the way.
Biggest of all -- new multiplayer maps for
Halo 2. For the longest time, whenever someone would ask Bungie if there would ever be any more multiplayer maps for
Halo 2, they'd say, "Well, we're kind of working on something called
Halo 3. Maybe later." It looks like that later is now, or at least next Spring. They didn't say how many maps would be coming out, or how much they'd cost ... just that you'd need an Xbox 360 to play 'em (for now).
They also announced that they'll be running a
Halo 3 commercial during
Monday Night Football on December 4th. The game won't feature any in-game footage, but is being created from scratch by Digital Domain. It'll be all-CGI using Bungie's models and and assets, and will feature new music from Marty O'Donnell. After the commercial airs on TV, it'll be available in the XBL marketplace along with the next installment of Bungie's "making of"
Halo 3 documentary. Having a
Halo 3 commercial air during
MNF is pretty sweet, but what's this about no gameplay footage? Here's to hoping it doesn't suck.
Bungie will also be holding a public beta for the game sometime in the Spring, so you can imagine the forums will start filling up right away with people begging for that chance. There's little details about this, so we're glad we didn't wait up for only this.
They also posted the above screenshot, which they claim is from actually from in the game itself. It looks slick, but it also doesn't hold any real surprises.
With all that, we're off to bed. We could have waited on this stuff until like ... January, Bungie. Maybe a slow news day in the middle of the month? Not freakin' 2AM on a Wednesday morning the week that two consoles are coming out. Didja think this news would derail either of 'em? WELL? We want our sleep back.

Author Chris Suellentrop of
Slate magazine was invited by Sony to play the PS3 this week. Suellentrop, who appears to be a casual gamer, was skeptical at first of next-generation gaming before having a go with the PS3 saying that "unless you're a hard-core gamer, not every generation has a must-buy console." He claims, in a very matter-of-fact way, a continued satisfaction with his trusty "Xbox Classic."
That said, he was both critical and approving of Sony's next-gen prospects: "By the time my half-hour appointment had extended into two hours, my skepticism began to dissipate. I'm still not ready to shell out $5,000 [what he estimates to be a full HD upgrade] just to own a PS3, but I do think Sony has come up with a console that's worth dumping your old standby for, if you've got the wallet for it."
His main reasoning behind the recommendation? Non-launch title
Lair's "transfixing motion controls" that he believes are "new" and proof that motion sensitivity will change gaming. Regardless what you think of the author's opinion, it's interesting (and refreshing) to read a casual gamer's perspective on next-gen consoles.

UK boss claims Wii Sports will be defining game of this generation.
Nintendo has launched a thinly veiled dig at Microsoft and its record breaking launch of blockbuster FPS Halo 3.
Speaking at a press conference this morning in London, David Yarnton, general manager of Nintendo UK, said: "For all the recent talk of record breaking entertainment launches, it might just be that the defining and most influential video game of this generation is a simple game of tennis that the whole family can gather around and play and enjoy together."
Although Yarnton didn't mention Halo 3 or Wii Sports by name, the "record breaking entertainment launch" is obviously a reference to Halo 3 and the "simple game of tennis" is clearly Wii Sports.
A U.S. court judge denied Google's motion to dismiss a American Airlines' lawsuit that claims Google is infringing on the airline's trademarks by using them as keyword triggers for paid advertisements by other companies.

It?s kind of hard not to call Mission: Impossible: III (or M:I:III as it?s titled everywhere on the box) the best release, since there is really nothing else being offered as competition. While I?m not normally one to promote Tom Cruise or his films, there are only two other releases this week worth noting (see below), so Cruise definitely delivers the biggest bang.

Thomas did something dumb and he wants to warn others not to follow in his footsteps. He assumed (incorrectly) that his $7.99 per month subscription to XBOX Live would roll over into a yearly subscription once he'd paid $50. (A yearly subscription costs $50, obviously.) Yeah, it didn't.

What goes on in the video is the subject of debate. Elizabeth Banks having an orgasm with a hula hoop. Seth Rogen...
