If your hard drive is seriously f*cked, and you have some big shiny balls (or you're dumb as hell), you might be interested in how a fellow from Mandible Games claims that he recovered data from his drive. According to the article, he noticed that his drive would spin, but it would not show up in BIOS and there was a distinct and repetitive clicking noise.
After a little experimentation, he realized that it the heads may have gotten misaligned or stuck, and if he could jar the heads loose, it might work again. Naturally, when you heat something up, it expands —so, in theory, if the drive was heated, it should have the same effect. Apparently, by double boiling your drive you can achieve the proper amount of heat without doing any further damage —and the guy claims that the drive worked perfectly after the procedure.
Would I do this? Hell no—but then again I'm not a lunatic and I'm not willing to screw around with important data. However, if your idea of troubleshooting is to bang on it with a hammer, or your are too cheap to pay someone to recover your data, this may be something to try. [Mandible Games via Spluch]

The movie not only hits the sorts of stirring emotional notes that make it interesting to watch, it does it in a way that focuses on the people involved without getting too caught up in the supernatural or any sort of proselytism. Even if you dont believe the story on some sort of personal or spiritual level, the movie is still a wonderful piece of storytelling that could be enjoyed by anyone.

Game of the Year. It's a title that many a game developer covet for their own brainchild - and with today's video gaming community not as easily amused or impressed as it was a few generations back, it's harder than ever to even have your own creation be considered for this prestigious award. After all, should your game even be nominated for such an honor, it pretty much means that you're doing something right, and your title has caught the attention of not only its target demographic but also of the entire video game community's (or at least, a goodly-sized chunk of it).
Sick of all those newfangled games on your Nintendo DS? This new gadget lets you dust off your old 8-bit games and play them on your DS Lite.
The CYBER Familator Lite plugs into your DS Lite?s GBA adapter slot and lets you plug in carts from the old Nintendo Famicom (aka NES in the states), and play them right on the DS screen. While it?s designed to play Japanese Famicom titles, you should be able to play NES titles on it too if you manage to get your hands on a Famicom->NES adapter cartridge.

Normally one would have his doubts, but No Mutants Allowed immediately recognised these screens as showing stuff from the demo. The enormous mutant is the Behemoth, the building behind the Brahmin is Megaton.

A game reviewer with the chutzpah to give the new Zelda an 8.8 score (out of 10) was crucified by legions of zealots who have never played the game but who were convinced that it deserved a much higher score.
VGRC posts an excellent editorial on this ridiculous situation. How did we get here? How is it that the opinions of product reviewers are instantly deemed invalid because said reviewers refuse to play sycophant to the fan community's desire for gushing praise? Why should any reviewer bother to post honest opinions when he knows that the fan community will carry out personal attacks and will throw a general hissyfit?
We can't answer those questions, but we can't say we're surprised. Anyone that dares voice a negative opinion about the sacred Zelda cow gets harassed by fans who don't read game blogs so much for information but to confirm personal bias towards the popular franchise. It's called confirmation bias, and it's an ugly thing to witness.
It's also bad for gaming: blind fandom holds gaming back.

When you think about independent filmmakers out there doing their own thing, one name has to come to mind:
Spike Lee. From his first film
She's Gotta Have It (way back in 1986) through
Do the Right Thing, 25th Hour and up to his recent
Inside Man, Lee has demonstrated his impressive skills. When you watch a Spike Lee Joint you know you're in for an innovative and interesting experience. That's what makes him such a virtuoso filmmaker -- he tries to do something unique with each of his films -- unlike most of the cookie-cutter product coming out of mainstream Hollywood these days.
Unfortunately, commercial success has, for the most part, eluded Lee -- up until recently with
Inside Man. It was Lee's most successful film to date, earning over $180 Million worldwide. Plus, it was an extremely well-done bank heist thriller that featured standout performances by
Clive Owen,
Jodie Foster and Lee regular
Denzel Washington. Now, according to
Variety, Lee is "doing the right thing" and returning to familiar and successful ground for a sequel to
Inside Man that he is developing with Imagine Entertainment and
Brian Grazer. At the moment, things appear to only be in the development stages. But in true Lee style, he's already begun working on a script for the film with his
Inside Man co-writer
Russell Gewritz.
It's great to see a filmmaker with Lee's passion for storytelling and obvious talent finally getting the big-screen success and support he deserves. I might not always love his films, or agree with his politics, but at least he's never boring. Which is more than I can say for many other "directors" working today. No word yet on the return of any stars from the first film, a start date or other casting.
Anyone else out there a Spike Lee fan?

If you read our story about Roper's coveted SwitchBack PC hitting the commercial market, you might've wanted a closer look at the goods. We got one to play around with, and it's definitely a little bundle of bulletproof joy. It weighs in at just 3lbs 2oz all by itself; when you pop on the standard BackPack (USB, VGA, serial port, audio in/out), it hits 3lbs 11oz. We were surprised to see that it had an integrated (and fully waterproof) speaker, as well as a stylus plus mouse-stick for a choice of cursor movement. Even with a 1GHz Celeron, it started up nice and quick, and the screen looked great, albeit tiny. Stay tuned—in about a week, we should have a video of this baby getting put through the paces big time. Can you say "dunk tank"? Our interns can.

Michiel sheds some light on the rendering technics behind Killzone 2 and explains why they decided to take that development approach. He also gives his candid views on the Internet ?Hype Train?.
"?Deferred rendering? seems to be the buzzword of the moment. What is it, and how does it differ from normal rendering techniques?
Well, a deferred rendering engine separates lighting from drawing geometry. In a traditional forward renderer, you run a pixel shader to sample the material properties (the texture, reflection, et cetera), add the influences from all of the lights, and write out the complete pixel. In a deferred renderer you write out the surface properties (texture, specular intensity, et cetera) first, and then perform lighting on the pixels in screen-space.
The former technique is useful if you have just a few or very static lights, whereas the latter technique comes in handy if you have lots of (small-ish) lights. Okay, so that?s an oversimplification, but it is largely correct.
Killzone 2 also features a forward renderer, by the way, to render certain special effects. This includes all transparent materials, but also more complex shaders, like skin and water. "
