Video games, by virtue of being a different medium, require a different way of presenting stories. Gears 2 uses lines of dialogue specifically designed with the player's presence in mind. Characters use dialogue to echo what the player is thinking (or what the developers think the player will think… argh now I have a headache). This helps the player connect and identify with the characters. Allow me to present a few examples...

Pro-G writes:
"PS3 owners are starved of high-quality FPS games at the moment. Apart from launch game Resistance: Fall of Man, which we thoroughly enjoyed, and the recently released Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which we enjoyed even more, there's not much to write home about. But developer Epic is aiming to change all that with its PS3 port of classic sci-fi FPS Unreal Tournament 3, which will, for a time at least, be a console exclusive."
"Will UT3 be the PS3's Halo killer? To be fair, UT3 has never been billed as such a thing. Will it be as good as Call of Duty 4 online? We'll reserve judgement for the review. But my first impression is that what makes UT different - the speed and intensity of the action - has been shackled, resulting in an experience that feels like it's deliberately holding something back. The game looks like being a wonderfully realised port, one that further reinforces the view that the PS3 will have a much better time of it in 2008."

Consumer Reports' Annual Product Reliability Survey will be featured in their upcoming December issue. Its news? Flat panel displays are far more reliable than their rear-projection counterparts. Just how much more reliable? Around 15%.
The study showed that both LCDs and plasma displays needed repairs, on average, of only 3% of the time. Meanwhile, rear-projection sets had an overall necessity of repairs of 18%. And the worst culperates in rear-projection were DLP TVs. Yeah, apparently those millions of tiny mirrors need millions of tiny fixes—which is really too bad, since my eye favors good DLP over LCD and plasma any day.
Consumer Reports' other conclusion was that neither repair prices nor rates on either type of TV warranted warranties. So don't let that punk kid in a wrinkly blue shirt scare you out of your money better spent on hi-def content. [informationweek]

Do gamers need yet another platform?
GarageGames hopes so. The company's latest project, the
InstantAction "platform" -- that word was specifically used -- sits inside a web browser, creating a new environment for gaming. And unlike Flash's 2D limit, InstantAction will support a variety of developer-driven technologies and engines, scaling up to first-person-shooters that even utilize video hardware acceleration. (GarageGames had its hand in the
Tribes games after all.)
Like other browser plugins, InstantAction has cross-platform intentions. It's first launching for PCs in early 2008, Mac support will be coming as soon as possible, and a Linux version is under consideration. Gamers will be able to download several titles at launch with pricing to be determined. (Free content may be an option, while paid titles could follow subscription models, multi-game package sales, or single purchases.)
We recently explored an in-development version of InstantAction to wrap our heads around the platform-in-a-browser concept. The execution impressed us, but we're still unsure if InstantAction attempts to solve a problem nobody has. Will 3D and developer-driven environments be enough to displace Flash, as GarageGames hopes?

GamesRadar US' Mikel Reparaz reviews Manhunt 2 for Wii and PS2. The reviews for the two versions are almost the same, with the Wii review contains an additional page/section called "Get into it" that covers the Wii controls. Both versions receive the same final score. The verdict:
You'll love:
+ When it's good, it's brilliant
+ Insanely brutal even with censorship
+ Strangely compelling story
You'll hate:
- Censored all to hell
- Gunplay can get tedious
- Unskippable cinemas (Wii)
- Can't rotate camera (PS2)

As you may know, Traveller's Tales was bought by Warner Bros. last year and have been focusing on creating LEGO games based on Warner's properties. So now that we have LEGO Batman, what's next? A LEGO Harry Potter title seems probable - a highly profitable property that no doubt suits the style of gameplay - but will it happen? Gamefocus contacted Traveller's Tales representative Luk Cashmore to find out.

After enjoying its minute on the Japanese charts at number one, Halo 3 is nowhere to be seen. Plus, more on the exclusive Monster Hunter 3 Wii deal. In NextGen's Tim Rogers' Japan report, he writes:
"Why did Halo 3 bow out so quickly? If you recall, last week, I predicted that perhaps 58,000 was merely the exact population of Japanese Halo fans. The population has grown quite dramatically in the last six years, though it's still not blockbuster material. Looking at this week's charts, my hypothesis feels about right.
Surely, Halo 3 isn't yet dead in Japan: the theme of Japanese game sales as of the last few years has been "word-of-mouth". Word of mouth helped Nintendo DS explode into superstardom; it was a slow burn at first, though right about now the fire is pretty hot. And at a time when so many "hardcore" Japanese gamers are disillusioned with the state of games, maybe Halo 3 is a beacon of purity, of raw gaming experience. Maybe friends will tell friends about how great deathmatches are, or how awesome it is to co-op Legendary difficulty. Maybe the iron-pumping shooter freaks will get involved. Slowly, the game will start to sell. Who knows?"

Intel showed off six new ultramobile PCs on Monday. The PCs are designed around its Menlow chips, which will debut around the middle of next year.

Five of the ultramobiles were designed by Taiwanese companies, and it will be a first for four of them if they actually market the products. Asustek Computer is the only Taiwanese company of the group that has already launched an ultramobile PC, but it showed off a sleeker design at the Intel Developer Forum in Taipei.
BenQ, a Taiwanese mobile phone and systems maker, displayed its first attempt at an ultramobile PC, as did laptop PC makers Quanta Computer, Compal Electronics, and Inventec. Elektrobit, from Finland, also displayed an ultramobile PC.
The six designs are all part of Intel's Mobile Internet Device Innovation Alliance, in which group members worked together to solve engineering troubles associated with creating a small device able to connect to the Internet. The companies are all expected to launch new ultramobile PCs using Menlow microprocessors in the first half of 2008, and will likely display the items at the official launch of the Intel microprocessor.
Menlow is the code-name given to a set of chips Intel is developing for ultramobile PCs and mobile Internet devices (MIDs), due out next year. Menlow will include a new low-power microprocessor code-named Silverthorne and a chip set codenamed Poulsbo, according to Intel.
The company also showed off a mock-up of a product designed around its Moorestown chips, which are due out in 2009. The mock-up was about 8 inches by 3 inches, with a touch screen on one side and a 6.0 megapixel video camera on the other. It was made to show hardware makers what's possible with Moorestown, said Gadi Singer, vice president of the Mobility Group at Intel. It is not being developed as a reference design, said Singer, who said he is not aware of any Intel partners currently making similar products.
Moorestown is the code-name for the chips that will replace Menlow. Intel expects to put the functions of several chips onto one with Moorestown, including the microprocessor, graphics, video, and memory controller, and ensure a 10 times reduction in power consumption compared to today's chips.
