(S12E04) Goths tend to be sincere and genuine according to Kynt of The Amazing Race. And, if one were to base his perception of Goth kind of folks just on this particular episode of the show, it would be and accurate perception indeed.
There was a lot to enjoy with the episode and the Goth couple, Kynt and Vyxsin were just a part of it. Ah, but there was a team to boo, too. That team was genuine, as well. Genuine creeps, that is!

This release adds an orthogonal routing option for tree layouts. It improves the maintenance of model ordering in layout results, and adds the option to scan the hierarchical layers from sources, sometimes improving the layout result.
There's a lot to digest in Newsweek's seven-page all-out feature. Jeff Bezos sum it up: "This isn't a device, it's a service." Kindle starts shipping tomorrow for $399 and is "a perpetually connected Internet device" running off of EV-DO—it calls the service "Whispernet." It's totally computer independent: You browse for books (88,000 at launch) and buy them in a "one-touch process," it comes with a personal Kindle email address and it can browse the regular internet—keyboard sounds useful now doesn't it?
NYT bestsellers and hardback new releases will go for $9.99, with classics going as low as $1.99. Through the service, which is an extension of the Amazon store, you also can subscribe to newspapers (NYT, WSJ, Washington Post) and magazines, which are automatically sent to Kindle when they drop on the wire.
Talking about the hardware itself, it'll hold 200 books onboard, though you can supplement with unspecified memory cards. It'll get up to 30 hours of reading per charge and weighs 10.3 ounces. So, why does such a potentially disruptive device look so very plain? They wanted it to look like "an austere vessel of culture." The moniker Kindle is from the same line of thinking, " the crackling ignition of knowledge." But, thankfully, it doesn't get warm itself.
Some obvious questions are left though, mostly about the "always-on" connection—is the EV-DO-based Whispernet service included in the $399? If not, what's the pricing on that? And what are its limits, since you can go out onto the real web? Odds are, Bezos himself will reveal the answers tomorrow.
The goals here are pretty lofty: "Amazon believes it has created the iPod of reading." We really, really dig Jeff's vision, "that you should be able to get any book—not just any book in print, but any book that's ever been in print—on this device in less than a minute," so we hope about as much as he does that this little beige slab lives up to all the wonderful that they're promising. Reuters documents the Japanese PS3 frenzy, saying that the console sold nearly all of its stock -- 88,400 units -- in its first two days. Just over 60 percent moved were the 60GB version, but we expect gamers were just buying whatever was available.
But what games do the Japanese players want? Mobile Suit Gundam: Target in Sight and Ridge Racer 7 are the hottest titles, selling about 30,000 each. While other launch titles are picking up the slack, it sounds like Japanese gamers are spending most of their money on the console and not on games.
The PS3 already supports video downloads in Japan, so that audience may see it as a rounded entertainment system -- or a Blu-ray player. We're interested in how the number of games sold per-console averages out in different parts of the world.Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

As if the Wii and PlayStation 3 weren't enough for one weekend, Microsoft sent us their upcoming Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive to tinker around with. After the ritual unpacking, we hooked it up -- using a simple USB cable to the 360 and (yet another) power adapter -- installed the software patch they provided with the unit, and got right into a movie. Initial impressions of the HD-DVD drive is that it delivers an incredible image for the high-def inclined; however, it's yet another box to add to your growing arsenal of electronics.
For gamers with high-def displays and Xbox 360s, the $200 HD-DVD player provides a (relatively) affordable path to high-def discs, but with Microsoft's recent announcement of downloadable high-def rentals, we imagine plenty of consumers will be willing to wait this format war out. More pics of the package and a video after the break.

EA has just revealed in its latest European release schedule that Half Life 2: The Orange Box on Playstation 3 has been delayed again. The Xbox 360 and PC versions have been in stores since early October, but the Playstation 3 version would release 'a few weeks after that', according to Valve.
In the latest trailers Valve promised that the PS3 version would be in stores in time for the holidays. Apparently Valve ran in to some more trouble with the Playstation 3 as Orange Box on the Playstation 3 is now scheduled for release on January 17, 2008. A specific reason for this delay was not given.

As a party game, the appeal of Donkey Konga is self-evident -- who doesn't enjoy clapping and banging on things? But while the game is well-tuned to allow gamers of all skill levels to join in, experienced rhythm gamers will be bored to tears by most of the game's patterns. How to crank up the difficulty? Simple -- quadruple the bongos.

Given how many titles are released for the Xbox 360 and then don?t see even a single piece of downloadable content ? let alone a full-on expansion pack ? It is safe to say that support for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has been pretty good. Oh, sure, there were a few niggles to work out in the beginning ? in fact, the game will probably never live down the whole horse armor pricing debacle ? but, in the end, gamers don?t have much room to complain...and the end is exactly where they are. Fighter?s Stronghold, for people who don?t know, is supposedly the last official plug-in to be released for Oblivion, and, as a sort of parting gift, it was also offered free for an entire week.

The company said the move should be complete by next summer. [Scripps]
