Just when one is about to write off Diablo Cody's much-praised screenplay as less than the sum of its ornate quips, a scene will be flipped in an unexpected direction and a hidden vein of emotion suddenly struck. by Fernando F. Croce
The PS3 was supposed to be the most insanely advanced gaming machine ever created. So why is it, then, that all these PS3 games look just the same as they do on the Xbox 360?

One of the first jobs I ever held was as an auto mechanic and have had a passion for cars that predates my passion for technology. Watching the U.S. auto industry make mistake after mistake until it was nearly out of business has been particularly painful for any of us who love both cars and our country.

"Looking at the Guitar Hero III leaderboards, Wii scores are pretty far ahead of both 360 and (especially) PS3 scores. GH III may be a casual-friendly game, but there's nothing casual about getting over 100 millions, not to mention that this is the first iteration available on Wii so the scores should be lower than GH veterans of 360 or PS2."

It seems like a point of pride for hackers these days to port Linux onto any game console. We've already got versions of the ultra-portable operating system for the
PS2,
Xbox and
GameCube. Now, days before its release, there is already a Wiki devoted to porting Linux on to the Wii.
The
WiiLi project, as it's being called, hopes to expand the Wii's functionality with USB mouse/keyboard support, MAME emulation, OpenOffice document creation, and more features of a standard computer. Of course there is no known way to hack into the Wii yet, but the page is optimistic about the chances because of the system's GameCube-like architecture.
With Sony supporting and official version of Linux for the
PS3 and the community hard at work on an
Xbox 360 version, it seems like it's only a matter of time before the next generation of systems all run the ubiquitous OS. Will you be installing it on your next game console?
[Thanks Rayek]

The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend and the Weekend Warrior has a full write-up and analysis of the weekend. There was a shake-up in the Top 2 films at the box office, but it didn't come in the form of either of the star-studded debuts, as both Fred Claus (Warner Bros.) starring Vince Vaughn and Lions for Lambs (United Artists) starring Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep failed to beat either of last week's big openers. And yet, this weekend, the top spot went to DreamWorks' animated Bee Movie , which moved into the #1 position with an estimated $26 million.

You may have noticed that I haven't made much mention of
Heroes around here these past few weeks, mostly because I was trying to come to terms with the fact that one of my favorite shows was self-destructing right before my eyes, which was sort of like watching someone you care about being destroyed by addiction, but instead of crack, my Monday night friend couldn't stop with the crappy plotlines about wussy high school romances,
My Two Dads turned into
homoerotic melodrama, and deleted scenes from
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The show I was most excited about watching this season fell so far from grace that I was seriously planning to abandon it altogether before it FINALLY took a few baby steps forward this week, hinting that it might return to being an awesome show about people with badass powers instead a bunch of melodramatic whining.
And I don't think I was the only person ready to abandon ship, because
Heroes creator
Tim Kring just gave
Entertainment Weekly an interview
in which he admits everything that he did wrong, apologizes profusely, and promises to give up his "boring TV" habit. Take this truth nugget, for example:
Kring regrets sticking Claire (Hayden Panettiere) with a super-dud boyfriend and forcing Hiro to moon over a cutesy princess. ''I've seen more convincing romances on TV,'' he admits. ''In retrospect, I don't think romance is a natural fit for us.''
Really Tim, you don't think so? But you know, last week's episode did show some promise, it takes a big man to acknowledge when he's wrong (especially when he's REALLY wrong, like "flying teen romance in the sky" wrong), and the first step towards recovery is admitting you have a problem, so we're willing to forgive and (do our best to) forget. But so help me, Hiro - if Kring falls off the wagon and the show goes back to cherry blossoms and mile high kisses instead of
Peter Petrelli kicking people's asses, I'll spend my Mondays watching old
Lost episodes on Netflix faster than NBC can say "
Strike".

The holidays are coming and it's time, once again, to try and get that non-gaming significant other to drink the Kool-Aid. Stuck on how to get the lady in your life, or that Liberace fanboy friend, hooked for the holidays? Well, the PSP and DS phat both come in blinged out crystal versions to ease those into gaming that find the units too masculine -- or just plain ugly. But the crystal units won't come cheap, it costs money to make someone look and feel fabulous gaming.

The Nintendo World store in NYC currently sells a $499 DS phat by NYC Peach. There are many different styles available, and if you've got the money to burn, you can get her a different style for every day of the week. Who needs to pay rent? You have to keep the lady happy!
We also have German mail order store OTTO selling Swarovski crystal PSPs. PS Pro magazine
says that two versions will be offered, both with 2000 crystals each. The Passion of Flowers is for your girly-girl, and The Black Cobra is for the sophisticated lady. The cost is a mere 899€ ($1143 USD), but isn't she worth it?

In case you're unaware, there's an election on Tuesday. The entire U.S. House, a third of the Senate, and a number of governorships are all up for grabs. The Associated Press, that sterling investigative organization, has decided to focus on the real issues, particularly in Kentucky, a state where highly indictable governor Ernie Fletcher doesn't have to face the voters until 2007:
Being the governor's dog has its perks.
First pooch Abby has her own stationery, complete with stamped doggy signature. She has cards and photos for every season - in bunny ears for Easter, in a pumpkin cap for Thanksgiving and surrounded by poinsettias for Christmas.
The little West Highland terrier even has her own Internet video, giving a tour of the governor's mansion on Glenna Fletcher's official Web site.
Kentucky's first family says the costs are minimal; the smiles and good will, priceless.
That's why defenders of the little white pooch started growling after the Associated Press sent a letter requesting records to determine how much public money has been spent on the family dog.
Also, we hear the dog once dated Julia Allison.

New ideas are needed to keep the tumbleweeds from blowing through the Walgreens photo department, and the latest is a burn-your-own-DVD kiosk, specializing in the rare and out-of-print. We were the first to report on the DVD Copy Control Association voting to approve the "DVD Download" CSS format. But many of you complained that it would require special blank discs, and would still cost the same as a download for your iPod. In this case, Walgreens would supply the special discs and Sonic burning software, and in about 15 minutes, ordinary people would get their own copies of "older and more niche content selections" that don't pay to produce down at the DVD factory.
