Mark Rein dropped into the Epic Forums last night to let VGA cables users know that the
Gears of War aspect ratio issue has been fixed. Gamers playing on non-widescreen monitors have experienced squashed aspect ratios since the game shipped. A patch will be included in the next
Gears update, which has yet to be scheduled. Rein added that Epic is still working on
additional features for the update.
Epic's vice president also made a direct apology to fans for the VGA oversight, explaining that the development team was only using widescreen monitors. A non-widescreen monitor has since been acquired for testing purposes.

DS sales rose significantly following the release of chart topping Dragon Quest IV, while Wii ousted PlayStation 3 as the home console of choice for the week ended November 25.
Nintendo?s handheld shifted almost 120,000 units, driven by the release of Dragon Quest IV, which obliterated the competition in the latest Japanese software chart. It was a good week for Sony?s PSP also. Generallly stuck around the 60,000 units per week mark over the past month, the PSP sold in excess of 75,000 units.
After two weeks as the home console of choice, PlayStation 3 sales dropped below those of Nintendo?s Wii, but not by much. Less than 4,000 sales separated the pair.
Microsoft?s Xbox 360 also sold relatively well, by its own standards, shifting over 7,000 units.
Nintendo DS Lite - 116,694
PSP - 75,027
Wii - 54,362
PlayStation 3 - 50,564
PlayStation 2 - 14,875
Xbox 360 - 7,117

Greedy Raven writes, "Black Friday is finally upon us all. The opening of the holiday Christmas season in a troubled economy means that instead of buying bigger TVs and a super powered audio system, shoppers will be eying video games as a possible alternative. Unfortunately, this week does not bring in the list of blockbusters we have seen from previous weeks...."
It's the day before Thanksgiving, so we're damned if we're going to bother to do, you know, any real reporting on this one, but a well-placed source tells us that former Jessica Simpson flack Rob Shuter "has been consulting for [marginally less sophisticated InTouch celeb weekly] OK!." We've no idea if the rumor is true, but the current issue includes the following item:
It's been a year since Jessica Simpson's split from ex-husband Nick Lachey, and the 26-year-old doesn't seem to be reveling in her singledom. She's been avoiding the party scene. According to several reports, it's because the singer is depressed over her current life status. Her latest album didn't make much of a dent on the pop scene, and her love life has stalled. Jessica also doesn't have a lot of close friends. The short list includes her wardrobe and hair stylists Jessica Paster and Ken Paves, her sister Ashlee and her pet pooch Daisy. "Nothing is lifting her spirits," a source tells OK!..

Gamespot is reporting that Activision faces delisting from NASDAQ due to non-compliance. They failed to report their quarterly earnings on time, a situation the company says they will correct as soon as 'practicable'. Meanwhile, Vivendi earnings are up 190% No, that's not a typo. Two guesses as to why. From the article: "Unsurprisingly, Vivendi Games attributed the profit spike largely due to what it describes as 'the higher margin of the World of Warcraft business.' It also cited other factors, including the start-up investments for the Sierra Online and Vivendi Games Mobile divisions and strong sales of Scarface: The World Is Yours in October." So the PS3 will playback JPG photos, Sony's own music format, ATRAC, MP3, AAC, and MPEG-4.
By far the coolest thing is the 3D slideshow view for photos. You can zoom in and out, and it even makes little negative strips from your images. Hot.
But at first, we couldn't get it to read any media from SD or CF cards (didn't try the supported Memory Stick.) It didn't even recognize our USB thumbdrive. Things worked better when we dropped photos inside of folders called "music", "picture" and "video". Weird shit. That's like the PSP's annoying file structure. Tell me Sony, would it have been so hard to scan the entire flash for file extensions?
This is for version 1.0 of the software, and v1.1 is out, but the PS3 didn't let us update. (Maybe the download isn't working yet because the console isn't officially shipping.) –Brian Lam

1up and EGM have had some time in the last month with the next iteration of Microsoft's Halo series. Several folks at the site have put up their impressions of the current build of the game, including some multiplayer feelings from EGM editor-in-chief Dan Hsu, a bunch of nice crunchy details from Mark Macdonald, a nostalgia-laiden look at the game from Luke Smith, and a potpourri of details from Crispin Boyer. From Luke's writeup: "Maybe it was the first shooter I played that had some substance? Maybe it was that my best friend bought me a copy of the game for my birthday and I didn't even have the console yet. Maybe it was all of the traveling to play in Halo tournaments on weekends in college, but somewhere between Halo: Combat Evolved's release and now, Halo became my Mario. It is the game that made me care about video games like I did when I was 10."
