Taking the Bait: We're not above it every once in awhile.
Dear Socialite Rank,
How's it going? We were a little confused when we received your email telling us that we had been selected to be official voting members in your little awards hoo-ha next month--the Silver Spoon Awards, we believe you're calling them? After all, you did say, not so very long ago, "When negative comments about socials come from Gawker they are not taken seriously." Sniff! Well, looks like you've changed your minds. We can't wait to vote for the Tinz for Socialite of the Year, but we're having a little trouble making up our minds for the rest of the categories. Maybe you can help us out?
Like, should we choose Jessica Joffe's Banana Republic ads for Campaign of the Year, or Lydia Hearst's Feria ads? And quite frankly, we have no fucking clue who those international debutards you have pictured there are. Oh, and also, that dress that Bee Shaffer is wearing looks like something you'd pick up in one of those leather stores on St. Marks, but that's just our opinion. Is that why you don't take us seriously?
Anyway, just wanted to say thanks a million for thinking of us. We'll get our votes in real soon!
Love,
Gawker

Here's an FAQ about the just-announced merger of Vivendi, Blizzard and Activision direct from Blizzard's website.
Q: Will Activision and Blizzard now share development teams?
A: No, both of our companies will continue to operate as they have previously with regard to game development.
Q: Will the release schedules for any Blizzard games be impacted?
A: No, the transaction will not have any impact on our games, our day-to-day operations, or our release timelines.
The always entertaining RetroGaming with Racketboy has a long post up railing against Sega for ruining Sonic the Hedgehog. The blue, spikey hero has had a rough time of it of late. Outings from the series like Shadow the Hedgehog, and even the next-gen title simply named Sonic the Hedgehog, have gotten simply terrible reviews. He longs for a return to simple, fun, not-creepy play. From the article: "As the new generation of platforms emerged, Sega used Sonic as a way to show off their newest graphical technologies. There is no doubt that the new Sonic the Hedgehog for the XBox 360 looks nice, but as the abysmal reviews indicate, graphics are not everything. In order to push its cutting-edge graphics to the limit, Sega, in their infinite wisdom, felt the need to bring Sonic and his friends into a more realistic world, filled with life-like humans. As you can see from this video, there is something creepy about some giant hedgehogs interacting with humans. My point is that Sega doesn't seem to know what it wants to do with Sonic. It seems like Sega assigns various quick-and-dirty development projects in order to see what ideas sticks with consumers. Unfortunately, Sega fans have had to suffer through this process."

The SMS Server Tools send and receive short messages through GSM modems or mobile phones. The user can send short messages by simply storing text files into a special spool directory. The program monitors this directory and sends new files automatically. It also stores received short messages into another directory as text files. The program can run other external programs or scripts after events like reception of a new message, successful sending, and when the program detects a problem. These programs can inspect the related text files and perform automatic actions.

(S01E11) I feel manipulated. I feel used. I feel a pawn to a lesson session. I feel all I learned in childhood about doing the right thing is so much better than doing the fun thing was snatched from behind my wall of memories and plopped down in tonight's episode of
Kid Nation.
Why must fun always have consequences? Or, at least choosing fun over a more serious option? It doesn't always play that way in adulthood. Sometimes you can have fun without regret. Yeah, seriously.
But I'll never be a Dance Master, no matter how much fun it might be. There is something called reality which comes to mind.

Filing way back in February of 2006, IBM patented a model for a dynamically updated, commercial-laden DVD. Essentially, the DVD would be coded to stick commercials in at certain points on the disc, which, depending upon one's reading of the documents, would probably not be skippable. (The commercial content itself could either be accessed from the DVD or downloaded from an online source.) And the whole concept is scary as all hell to us, even though IBM points out its potential use as offering a cheaper alternative to DVD. Here's the abstract:
A method wherein contents of DVDs may be restricted based upon purchased certificates is provided. The certificates allow for secured information on playback. Specifically, whenever a DVD is to be played, a certificate is consulted to determine whether the content of the DVD should be played with or without commercial interruptions. If the certificates provide for commercial interruptions, then commercials can be obtained from an online service that renders commercials on demand, or from the DVD itself. In such a case, the content of the DVD may be interspersed with commercials.
Good luck selling consumers on this one, IBM. Cheap DVDs or not, the public has grown tired of commercials. You know, because of technologies like DVD. [

Greetings, people of Earth, and all the rest of you, too. Patricia
here on this lovely first Friday of November. Still reeling over the news that
Tom Cruise is going to start running United Artists? Well, pick yourself up off
the ground -- or couch, or whatever -- because it's time to play ourselves some
box office bingo.
'Borat': Apologies, but I have to lead
with a movie that has no chance in hell of winning the box office this weekend,
and that's 'Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious
Nation of Kazakhstan,' starring comedic genius Sacha Baron Cohen as the sweetly
ignorant Kazakh reporter who criss-crosses the U.S. in search of American
culture and Pamela Anderson. And by "sweetly ignorant," I mean
blatantly misogynist (women should live in cages) and anti-Semitic (by now, his
'Throw the Jew Down the Well' singalong at a country bar has passed into
legend), but who's counting? Seriously, while there are legions of offended
potential moviegoers who don't realize or care that 'Borat' is a satire -- and
a wildly hilarious, politically daring one at that -- there are legions more
who can't wait to see Baron Cohen pull one over on his clueless victims,
whether they be astonishingly patient dupes or shockingly enthusiastic bigots. 'Borat'
only opens in 837 theaters this week, so its true glory might have to wait
until next week, when it expands to 2,200 screens; but with the deafening buzz
that's preceded its opening, we're rooting for 'Borat' to grab some impressive
box-office bucks this weekend anyway. High-five!
'The Santa Clause 3': There's a battle
royale going on this weekend, and it's not Republicans vs. Democrats or even
Lindsay Lohan vs. Hilary Duff. Nope, it's a knock-down, drag-out fight between two
family-friendly films set to knock 'Open Season' from its seemingly permanent
perch in the top five. One of these is 'The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause,'
a movie that, to be honest, is depressing me a little bit, because it's
reminding me that Christmas shopping season is just around the corner. (We just
had Halloween! It's too soon!) As for the movie itself, it once again stars Tim
Allen as the big guy and Elizabeth Mitchell (the mysterious Juliet on 'Lost') as
his wife; and this time they've got Martin Short around as the dastardly Jack
Frost, who's determined to conquer the North Pole and reign over the elves and
reindeer himself.
Our prediction: This sequel's got an early Christmas present coming, and it's not a lump of coal.
'Flushed Away': From the folks who brought you 'Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit' and 'Chicken Run' -- that would be the British animation studio Aardman Animations -- comes the tale of Roddy, a posh city mouse who gets flushed down a drain into the sewers of London. And then the hijinks begin. Hugh Jackman provides the voice of the flushee, Kate Winslet is cute love interest Rita, and Ian McKellen is the villainous Toad, who's after Rita's ruby (and no, that is not a euphemism -- get your mind out of the, uh, sewer). 'Flushed Away' is loaded with stars and whimsy, and the early reviews are quite good; but can a bunch of British vermin, as charming as they are, beat Santa? Ooh, it's the UK vs. the USA! Bring it on.
My picks follow. Post your own, be sure check back Monday to see how you did (click here for our scoring system), and in the words of Borat, may your weekend be niiiiice.
- The Santa Clause 3
- Flushed Away
- Saw III
- Borat

Ah coincidence, life would be so unmystical without it. We were just saying yesterday that we'd prefer people played
Sid Meier's Pirates! over the
Pirates of the Caribbean MMO and here comes
GameTap announcing the title for the service. If you haven't played
Pirates!, the game is a bright and fun romp through the Caribbean with simple pick-up-and-play mechanics that should keep anybody entertained for hours. It's an epic casual title if such a thing exists.
The new subscriber games this week are:
- 688 (I) Hunter/Killer (PC) - Adventure under the seas in this submarine sim game. If you've ever played a submarine sim game then you know these games are usually best if you have a decade of Navy training under your belt first.
- Shellshock: Nam 67 (PC) - A third-person shooter set during the Vietnam War that didn't hit the mark.
- Sid Meier's Pirates! (PC) - Colorful, fun, simple, and possibly addictive. Pirates! takes basic old-school gameplay and updates it for the new generation with success. Absolutely worth playing as it stands tall and proud as a game that knows it's meant to be entertaining with great replay value.
After the break we have GameTap's list of
free games. The new games this week are
Second Sight and
Cannon Fodder, both of which have been bolded for easy "new games" reference. Next week GameTap will usher in the
new season of Sam and Max with
Ice Station Santa.

In the latest fullmoon show from insomniac games, a couple of the crew discuss some reviews of the game. The crew are appreciative of the reviews after checking metacritic and gamerankings. They state that out of 21 scores, only 4 are below 90 with 3 perfect scores. They were concerned about critics to the "returning to roots" approach to the game, but people have received it very well.
One of the reviews had sticked out to them which prompted the crew to say "If you hate variety, than you've got a problem.", "play more sports games", and "we will not mention the media outlet".
After the discussion with their mystery guest, they speak to Ross Macintosh . The crew discusses their "gamespot resistance: fall of man tournament." Ross quickly reminded the rest of the crew that the tournament is now called "the resistance: fall of man tournament with the website whose name we shall no longer mention" in a jokingly manner.

Dan Clarke's GameStop manager told him that GameStop had a national conference call today that ordered all managers not to take returns any more and instead to direct gamers to amazon.com/support. When he went to GameStop, he saw a half dozen GHWT opened boxes behind the counter. He tried contacting Red Octane both as an average consumer and as a press member asking to see what can be done, and hasn't even received an email in the past 24 hours.
Activision and Red Octane did add to their FAQs stuff like "make sure you have fresh batteries" - the batteries included with their game weren't fresh?
[UPDATE: Glen Haag, co-founder of the site, adds: I'm having some minor guitar issues with GH:WT. The green button seems to stick and the star power activates automatically whenver obtained. It's certainly annoying, so I'm going to wait and see how the warranty issues resolve. I would tend to believe that Activision and Red Octane will work together to get a better solution in place soon.]

I have an unnatural obsession with all things remote controlled, probably stems from the need to control the things around me. The new Palm Z Silverlit Mini RC Airplane is the Picco Z for this year and these things are every bit as fun as the Picco Z, minus the vertical takeoff and landing bit.
The Palm Z charges from the controller, but unlike the Picco Z, there is no cable to connect to recharge the plane. The Palm Z connects to an adapter built into the controller, which is much easier than fiddling about with a cord. The plane is full function with climb, descend, left and right controls. With impact-resistant foam, construction crashes won't automatically destroy the plane. I crashed it several times into walls,
doors, the dog, my wife and a few other things. The plane was really no worse for the wear. Piloting the 8-inch wingspan plane is easy thanks to a slow flight speed and you can even pull some loops. Three Palm Z's can be flown at once thanks to multiple controller frequencies. The Palm Z retails for $39.50. [product]
