Gamevideos' Managing Producer shows you what you missed.

In July, Don Mattrick came off an 18-month sabbatical to take the helm at Microsoft games. To say things were a bit rocky for the Xbox 360 makers would be an understatement.
As the rest of the games industry was gearing up for E3, the company put out a public mea culpa about its Xbox 360 hardware failures. To pay for the extended warranties on the consoles, Microsoft announced that it would take a $1 billion hit against quarterly earnings. Before the month was out, Peter Moore, the head of Microsoft games, would resign to take the top spot at EA Sports.
But as Microsoft heads into the holiday season, Mattrick says he feels that the company has rebounded just fine from the summer?s bit of bad press ? and is poised to trump the competition this holiday season.
?On a price-per-value basis, I think we win?relative to Sony and Nintendo,? he says. ?Of course, I?m biased, given the role that I?m in, but if I really think about it using my consumer instincts and the experience that I?ve had, this is the best blend of performance, price, online and games ? by far.?
Judging by this 4-minute preview of
The Pineapple Express (via
Goldenfiddle), which is the latest offering from the
Judd Apatow Hollywood Hilarity Factory, this could very well be the most anticipated comedy of 2008. It's as if
Knocked Up and

The Big Lebowski and all the
Cheech & Chong movies, and then THEY had a baby. That's how awesome is this going to be. (Language NSFW)
Produced by Paris studio 5.5 Designers, the O Aquarium/Vase is an elegant combination of aquatic and plant life that will beautify your home without torturing the fish like those beta+flower minitanks do.
Sure, the concept is simply a vase stuck in a bowl, but it's executed with grace and that counts for a lot. Now where should we stick our treasure chest/diver/topless mermaid bubbler? – Mark Wilson

The Game Plan tells the story of rugged superstar quarterback Joe Kingman (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson), whose Boston-based team is chasing a championship. A 'serial bachelor', Kingman is living the ultimate fantasy: he's rich, famous and the life of the party. But this dream is suddenly sacked for a loss when he discovers the 7-year-old daughter (newcomer Madison Pettis) he never knew he had – the product of a last fling before parting years ago with his young wife. Now, during the most important time in his career, he must figure out how to juggle his parties, practices and dates with the newfound ballet classes, bedtime stories and dolls that come with his daughter. Equally perplexed is his hard-edged mega-agent, Stella (Kyra Sedgwick), herself without a parental bone in her body. Despite the often hilarious misadventures that come with being a new father, Joe discovers that's there's more to life than money, endorsements and thousands of adoring fans: the love and care of one very special small fan is the only thing that matters.
Seattle Post-Intelligencer reporter Todd Bishop writes:
With the holiday shopping season set to start, a full year has passed since the head-to-head competition began between the Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation 3 video-game consoles. In terms of sheer demand, the Wii has been the runaway hit. But there are a variety of ways to assess the data. Here's a breakdown in four categories (and charts):
? Worldwide installed base
? U.S. installed base
? U.S. head-to-head (adjusted for the Xbox 360's 1-year head start)
? Worldwide launch-year results

The idea behind EMI's 911 rCard is so brilliant I'm surprised no one's done it before. You basically load all of your medical information on to the card and in the case of an emergency, hand it over to the paramedics who can then view your medical history using the card's 2-inch LCD. The card itself is only $79, although there's a $20 yearly subscription. Now if only they could get it to play MP3s. – Louis Ramirez

Dude, I have no idea what to do this weekend! I'm torn between rock-climbing and seeing a sports game, because I am such a heterosexual male urban rugged individual. If I were a car, I'd be an SUV with a name like Ticonderoadster or Moutaineerio. Yeeeah! So I turn to a daily email newsletter to let me know what's cool, what's hip, what's hot, what's new, and most importantly what I can do with all this annoying cash I have in my wallet.
Sports game it is. But where should I eat dinner afterwards? This new restaurant Bar Martignetti sounds pretty sweet. It's a "no-nonsense brasserie" (hey, that sounds kinda dirty!) that serves "solidly wonderful" stuff like a goat cheese and beet tart and a duck confit salad. Aw, hells yeaah! And here is the best part:
their creed demands they not boot you even if you're the last man not passed out in his Sierra Nevada.
Dude, that is for sure a good thing because I pass out in my Sierra Nevada all the time. Depends on how much duck confit I've had, you know? Woot!

The 2008 version of Microsoft's Windows Hardware Engineering Conference will be held in the fall instead of the spring -- a change that the vendor attributed to "industry feedback."

With Vista, Microsoft makes its move to expand and deepen its digital rights management offerings. But will the copy-control technology thats supposed to be good for Hollywood cause grief for the rest of us?

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is fun and a solid entry into the franchise, but I doubt many folks will find it entertaining past a rental. Casual players will punch through the storyline before burning out after getting stumped by one or two Kombo Challenges, while Mortal Kombat fans will have trouble accepting the toned down Fatalities and somewhat slower gameplay. In short, this game's fun, but its legs probably can't carry it beyond the whole "Wow, Batman's fighting Superman" first impression.

medical monitoring
systems are
far from new, but everyone takes notice when a firm like Intel formally announces that it's diving in headfirst. According to a new report from
The Wall Street Journal, Intel is gearing up to launch a series of trials with health-care organizations in order to "show whether the new tools bring improved results in treating conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease." More specifically, the Intel Health Guide -- which includes a "simplified computer and software system that are designed to help elderly people and other patients monitor and manage their conditions at home" -- will connect to medical equipment and then
transmit that information with specified individuals (namely health professionals) over the 'net. Admittedly, the initiative is far from being implemented in non-trial form, but it should be good to go by the time you start forgetting things and kvetching about the taste of your tap water.

So we didn't see any PlayStation 3 price cuts this year. Will we at least see any next year?
The answer is a definite maybe. SCEE's executive VP Jim Ryan says "We'll look at pricing decisions for 2009 sometime in 2009. It's too early to tell."
On the other hand, he does say that Sony's gaming division doesn't seem to be affected by the economic recession, so that's promising:
The received wisdom on this is that when there's a recession, people stay at home and watch movies and play games. Everything that we've seen so far on sell-through for both hardware and software is that that's the case.
Our numbers don't seem to be affected so far, and we're tracking very nicely against our plans. This is a different economic climate to certainly anything I've experienced, so who can tell where it ends up? But as of now, we're happy the way sales are going.
[...] I think we will be less affected than most business categories.

September was a big month for the Xbox 360, with Halo 3 driving sales of the console. Well, the momentum has kept up, with Microsoft revealing today that according to GFK figures for October, the Xbox 360 was the best selling console hardware for the month.
Halo 3 also remained Australia?s number one game and sold more copies and generated more revenue than any other title across all formats. Australians also spent more dollars on Xbox 360 hardware, software and accessories than on any other platform. David McLean, Australian Xbox Director, says, "We have maintained our momentum throughout October and with the blockbuster range of titles we have coming in November and December, Xbox 360 is primed to finish the year on a very successful high."
