Speaking to VideoGamer.com at a recent Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway press event, Gearbox Software president and CEO Randy Pitchford has defended the Unreal Engine 3 against recent criticism.
"We love Unreal Engine. It's an outstanding piece of technology. Where we've used it as it's come, it's been solid and secure for us. It's great multiplatform technology, so we can run on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC."
"I've seen some of the stuff on the internet about the problems and I don't know if these developers are maybe new, or not used to using other people's technology or if they've gotten too many inexperienced developers or they're just cry-babies. I just don't know," said Pitchford.
CVG reports:
"A beta version of the UT3 patch is out, and it's awesome for at least two reasons. 1) It fixes lots of complaints we and other UT fans had about the awkward and over-restrictive menu and server browser, and b) it's backwards compatible.
That would be a total no-brainer in any other area of software design, but it's so rare in game patches that I'm actually going to have to explain what it means. It means you can still play with people who don't have the patch. That curious sound is the collective jaws of Valve, DICE and Blizzard hitting the floor."

This release includes the second incarnation of
the dynamic deployment system for Mac OS X. A key
aspect of this release is how much less time it
takes to get the dynamic deployment system
packaged up and deployed to client machines for a
specific domain. You no longer need to edit the
various files by hand. Instead, you can run a
script which will copy the template and configure
them to your domain.
Mooove over James Bond, yet another legendary heartthrob is looking to take over the country ... and he's bringing a cow along with him. Last month we told you how David Lynch was planning to distribute Inland Empire himself, after he went and purchased the rights from the film's producer, StudioCanal. Now, it looks like we're finally getting some details and it appears they involve Lynch going on a 10-city tour in January. Joining Lynch on tour will be pianist Marek Zebrowski (who will play what's described as "Polish night music" from the film) and his good friend Mr. Cow -- ya know, the one that was standing next to him last week when he plopped himself down on Hollywood Boulevard with a sign promoting Laura Dern's performance in the pic.
The bizarre marketing technique was so effective (check out some video from the event) that he's now bringing it to a host of other cities which, I assume, will include New York. Just picturing Lynch in the middle of Times Square alongside a pianist and a cow is already conjuring up hilarious images inside my head. As far as the actual film goes, Inland Empire will debut next month in Los Angeles, Pasadena, New York and Boston (sorry Jette, but Austin was not on the list ... yet). However, for those who do not get a chance to see it, Lynch signed a deal with Rhino Entertainment to release the DVD this summer with a bunch of bonus footage. I don't know about you, but I'd much rather have a commentary track so I can finally understand what the hell was going on in that flick (feel free to check out my best attempt at a review of Inland Empire back when it screened at NYFF). No word yet on which cities will be involved in the promotion, but we'll definitely let you know as soon as more info is available.
Oh, and if Laura Dern actually gets a nomination out of all this, then Lynch is officially a genius.

Games Radar investigate the conflicting developer opinions surrounding Sony's box:
"We don't know. Of course we don't. We're merely humble gamers, lacking the enormo-brain capacity to even begin comprehending the intricate complexities of game development, so how would we have any idea whether Sony's PlayStation 3 is a complete bitch to make games for? We have to listen to the experts - the men and women that work on the gruelling frontline of game-makery. Only trouble is, the developer community is sending out a mixed message.
Indeed, conflicting developer opinion on the subject regularly makes headlines. Just this week Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward insisted that it hadn't had any problem working with the console, which seems to fly in the face of much of the perceived disgruntlement. So who should we believe?"

Flock 1.0 is now available. I have to say, I played with it a couple times earlier and wasn't that into it. Haven't seen the 1.0 release, I am quite impressed. The integration with the social sites it supports is impressive, and the blog editor is one of the nicer once I have seen, tough I wish it popped under the current tab, or as a tab of its own. Flock runs most Firefox extensions, so all the stuff I liked about FF is still there. It would be nice to see even more integration: Last.fm and Meebo would both be great adds.
It is interesting now between Sonbird, Prism/WebRunner and Flock how the Mozilla world is both fragmenting and becoming better at the same time. I had a similar reaction to Songbird 0.3. It is WAY better than the last version I tried. I guess the real lesson here is that web stuff pwns all. When basically you see Browser+Social and Browser+Media and Browser-- taking off, it is obvious that the browser component is really the critical factor here.
Sony's been throwing a PS3 fest here in New York and along with Gawker's video guru, Richard Blakeley, gave us a first hand look at the PS3's web browser interface. Typing URLs with the controller is somewhat clunky as you can see from the video itself, but it'll let you open up to 6 different browser windows simultaneously and then tile them so you can see them all at once. Our compatriots at Kotaku also got a look at the PS3's movie browser, which displays animated thumbnails of each clip you have stored on the PS3. Check it out here. – Louis Ramirez

In a raft of announcements, Sonos today confirmed the existence of the $99 ZoneBridge 100, and launched two more PC-free music-store options on the system, including Napster and Best Buy's new Digital Music Store.
The cute little ZoneBridge is actually the best part of the news to me: rather than paying for a $350 ZonePlayer to connect to your router (which may be somewhere that will never need music), you can drop $100 to start the connection. As we told you earlier, ZoneBridges will also be good for fleshing out the mesh network in big-ass homes. The addition of the two music programs means that the Sonos now has a heady number of music-source choices. Both Rhapsody and Napster offer free anonymous no-credit-card one-month trials, so you'd be dumb not to try out both for the duration before making a decision. I've traditionally favored Rhapsody, but Napster is coming in $3 lower, at $10 per month, so that's going to make it a contender.
The Best Buy Digital Music Store is a Rhapsody-powered service that will cost $15 per month and won't have a free trial. However, it is a way for Best Buy to promote Sonos systems in the store, so I guess it has its purpose. Sonos also has Sirius and Pandora on the dial, for still more options. At some point, does it get too crowded in that Controller? I am starting to wonder. [Sonos]
