For you malcontents out there waiting for a really, really tough media center, Alienware may be answering your call. According to reports, the gamer-targeting PC-maker will be launching an addition to its media center lineup (currently just the Hangar 18) sometime soon, and apparently the new variation will be somewhat of a heavy hitter. The upcoming, higher-end phase of the company's home entertainment line will be capable of handling two CableCards, will have four swappable hard drive bays (for a total of 4TB of storage), and will be available with Blu-ray and audio distribution options. In addition to the new system, Alienware has also announced that it will be offering CableCard support for its current Hangar 18 models via an external OCUR (OpenCable Unidirectional Receiver), although the add-on will have to be installed by a professional reseller. We can only hope they'll offer an over spec'd, stylized remote to work all of this new gear.

I swear I tried to come up with a creative title for this post, but sometimes simplicity is best. We had to wait almost a year for the concluding half of Entourage's third season. It kept getting put off again and again, and I think it was because HBO wanted to keep it in line with the return of The Sopranos. Whatever. My point is that you'd think with all the re-scheduling, that the DVD set would hit the shelves quicker. No dice.
The set for season three, part two won't be in stores until October 2. Besides having to wait that long, you'd at least expect it to cost a little less, right? After all, it was only 8 episodes just like the first season. Wrong again. Expect to pay the same price that the longer seasons go for. Around thirty bucks. I wish I could say something exciting about some great special feature to make it seem like a worthwhile deal, but as with the other sets, I'm sure there will only be a few audio commentaries. I'm complaining, but of course I'm going to buy it. Part of me just wishes they had released the whole third season as one giant set and added a few featurettes or cast interviews. Something extra would have been nice.

Hell has officially frozen over. A DVD I expected never to exist finally has. The complete series of the television show Quark is being released on DVD this coming October. This lost icon from the 1977-78 season was created by Get Smart co-creator Buck Henry and lasted a grand total of eight episodes.

After investing some serious dough in the famed Cell processor powering its PlayStation 3, it's little surprise that Sony actually wants to make a profit off the platform -- and since the console wars haven't been all that favorable to Kutaragi's baby, the company is looking to enterprise as another potential source of ROI. The first fruits of this effort will be borne at next week's SIGGRAPH conference, where Sony will unveil a prototype computer board based around the multi-core CPU and sporting an RSX graphics processor. This so-called Cell Computing Board is targeted at 19-inch rack mount systems, and it promises to put on quite a show at SIGGRAPH by performing real-time processing of the type of 4K footage captured by Red Digital Cinema's RED ONE. And with Toshiba already promising to ride the Cell's coat tails to victory over its fellow co-developer in the living room, -- along with pushing its own graphics workstations -- this is one rollout that Sony can't afford to screw up.

First it was young, elegant Carine Roitfeld, making Vogue publishing look slightly effortless and more-than-a-little spunky from her perch in Paris. Then there was Franco Sozzani, reminding everyone with her all-black issue that Italian Vogue "has gained a reputation for being more about art and ideas than commerce." Now, fashion blogger Bryanboy reminds us, Aliona Doletskaya is the latest editor of a baby Vogue to arguably upstage American editor Anna Wintour, having reached her 10th anniversary at the healm of the fashion title's Russian edition. "Month after month after month, she offers original content, she uses models for her covers and her editorials are very bold, strong and in your face," Bryanboy writes. Well, sure, but there's also the fact that she can fly helicopters! Also: In 10 years, she sees herself flying across continents on an airplane. Considered that fair warning, Anna. Late last week, the new Harry Potter book leaked onto the the torrents in painstaking, photographic form. But instead of the uploader's identity remaining anonymous, the pictures actually left a trail in their metadata [read: those meddling wizards were gossiping again].
In fact, Canon was able to clearly identify the model of camera used (Canon Rebel 350) and claim that if the 3-year-old unit has ever been serviced, they will be all, "Accio thief!" Authorities think there's a high chance that the camera was serviced, but we're not sure just how many customers take such good care of their tech.
So until investigators track down a repair order for the camera, the informant will remain He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. As for those S&M pics you uploaded with a co-worker...it might be time to take those down. [times via inquirer]
(InfoWorld) - Predictions that growing demand for notebook PCs would result in a corresponding slowdown in demand for desktops haven't come to pass, Intel's top executive in Asia said.
"Pretty much all of our forecasts have understated mobile [growth] and have also suggested that at some point desktop [growth] will flatten out or even start to decline," said John Antone, vice president and general manager of Intel Asia-Pacific, in a telephone interview.
"The good news is that mobile continues to grow a little bit faster than we forecast and desktop has not contracted," Antone said.
Intel, the largest provider of microprocessors used in PCs, saw its finances buoyed by?growing demand for PCs. On Tuesday, the company said its second-quarter revenue was $8.7 billion, up 8 percent over the same period. Second-quarter?profit rose 44 percent?over the same period last year, to $1.3 billion.
Intel doesn't break out its revenue by specific product type, but does provide a breakdown by business unit. For example, Intel's Mobility Group, which makes chips for notebooks, saw microprocessor sales rise from almost $2 billion during the second quarter of 2006 to nearly $2.4 billion during the second quarter of 2007.
The strong growth in mobile processor sales was largely due to the launch of Santa Rosa, an upgraded version of Intel's Centrino chip package.
Intel's desktop processor sales are harder to determine, as they are spread across different business groups. But Intel said desktop processor shipments were up during the second quarter, despite generating less revenue as a result of a price war with Advanced Micro Devices?(AMD) that hit prices for low.
"Desktop unit demand came in higher than seasonal with strength across the board while revenue was lower on a year-over-year basis," said Paul Otellini, Intel's president and CEO, during a conference call with investors.
Predictions that desktop PC sales would decline as notebook shipments grow underestimated the demand from emerging markets. While desktop shipments in the U.S. and Western Europe have indeed declined, the market for desktop PCs has shifted to emerging countries, where such systems continue to be in high demand, Antone said.
"That frontier of where computing is getting to continues to push forward, and so the overall total unit volume for desktops has continued to be slightly up. It hasn't contracted on a worldwide basis yet," he said.
