Spend years in isolated locations photographing sometimes-dangerous animals. Edit those miles of film until exhausted in an attempt to contrive a story. Add calm, witty narration and orchestration and you've got a simple recipe for Oscar-winning success. That is, if it was the 1950's, you were Walt Disney, and nothing like it had ever been done before. These were the circumstances under which Disney's "True-Life Adventures" were born. Documenting real animal life-cycles described in human terms, the influence of these unique films is still felt today. Television is awash in animal shows. In September, the world grieved over the sudden death of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, a man who elevated animal fandom and activism to another level through his own TV programs. And this year's Academy Award-winning feature documentary March of the Penguins is only the latest in a still continuing journey started by Mr. Disney in 1946.

Heads-Up Displays, or HUDs, are a critical part of any game. Unfortunately, not all developers give their HUD design the priority they should.
Many games either clutter the screen with unwanted information or have a such a clumsy layout it's hard to see even basic information...say, how much health you have left.
Despite the overwhelming amount of faulty HUDs, some games have perfected this crucial aspect. Whether showing weakened health through a character's on screen animation, displaying available ammo on the weapon itself, or revealing available items by placing them visibly on the characters body, some inventive developers are working to change the way we interact with games. GamePro lists the 10 best HUDs in all of gaming... and three of the worst.

There are only 10 Frost White Helio Drift in existence, and Gizmodo got 3 of the GPS-enabled sliders straight from the factory today. As it turns out, the frost version of this tricked-out phone is only going to be produced in small numbers—only about 3 percent of all Drifts will be made in this lustrous shade. It's Samsung's first to hit this rare tone, and they had to learn some new tricks to get it just right.
We'll be testing out the Buddy Beacon GPS and buddy-stalking functions a bit later. But first, let's just get an eyeful of this frosty phone in the photo gallery... –Noah Robischon

Yesterday Novell released a statement disavowing Steve Ballmer's claim that Linux infringes Microsoft's IP. Linux-watch.com reports that Microsoft quickly responded with a statement of its own that softened, but did not entirely back away from, Ballmer's claim (but the article offers no link to such a statement). xtaski writes, "Everyone took notice when Ballmer spewed forth FUD about Microsoft and Linux IP. Now CIOs are asking just what did Ballmer think he was doing? They are not fooled — but rather, a little angry. ComputerWorld covers the news including one CIO who says 'There were some applications I had been thinking about moving to a Microsoft platform, but this has now totally alienated me from Microsoft.'" And an anonymous reader points us to the statement by the Open Invention Network — whose investors include IBM, Novell, Sony, Red Hat, Philips and NEC — on the Microsoft-Novell agreement. From the statement: "OIN continues to support the Linux community's ability to collaborate and innovate. Through the accumulation of patents that may be used to shield the Linux environment, including users of Linux software, OIN has obviated the need for offers of protection from others."

IBM's free alternative to Microsoft Office gets an update and an aggressive release schedule. But will it be enough to rival the market leader?
Two of the biggest games of the year come down under.
Last week, we revealed the finalists for the Readers' Choice Awards. And you've responded with some last-minute appeals for your favorite products.

IBM has agreed to buy business intelligence software vendor Cognos for around $5 billion in cash.

The move follows a period of consolidation in the BI and performance management software market, where Oracle bought Hyperion, while Cartesis and ALG Software were snapped up by Business Objects, which is itself being swallowed by SAP. Cognos also bought the much smaller performance management software vendor Applix earlier this year.
The move will be a blow to IBM rival Hewlett-Packard, which offers a business intelligence and data warehousing platform built using products from Cognos.
IBM intends to integrate Cognos into its Information Management Software division when the deal closes. That should happen in the first quarter of 2008, subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions, the companies said Monday.
Cognos CEO Rob Ashe will join IBM to lead the Cognos team there, reporting to the general manager of the IMS division, Ambuj Goyal.
IBM did not say how many of Cognos's other 4,000 employees it planned to retain.

Perhaps the oddest bit of Star Trek XI casting has been unveiled today, courtesy of Variety, and it has to do with Winona Ryder (of all people) landing the role of Spock's (Zachary Quinto) mom, Amanda Grayson. Freaky. I wonder if they'll be at least one "Dude, Spock, your mom is, like, totally hot!" The way the story goes is Grayson was a schoolteacher on Earth when she married a Vulcan diplomat named Sarek, and then later gave birth to Spock. So yeah, Ryder will just be playing some chick from earth -- how much fun is that? Still, it's a very odd role for her -- one I'm sure isn't very large -- considering the gal hasn't starred in a major commercial flick since ... 2002's S1m0ne? Or how about 2002's Mr. Deeds? But she did throw on the duds for Alien: Resurrection, so we know the sci-fi is in her blood, somewhere.
In related Star Trek XI news, the first spy photos from the set have leaked online. Ah, I always love it when the first spy photos for a major film hit the net -- especially when it's a Paramount film, because Paramount goes to such great lengths to hide stuff from everyone. Case in point: IESB managed to get a hold of these photos of extras shooting out of some sort of warehouse. But since the studio knows spies are everywhere, they're making all of the actors and extras dress in long black trenchcoats ... with hoods. So when you see them, all packed together, they look like some bizarre cult heading off to sacrifice a virgin or ... William Shatner. One of the actresses on set looks just like House's Jennifer Morrison, and IESB claims she might be playing Janice Rand (a role that was rumored to be going to Rachel Nichols). Personally, all this makes my head spin -- I'm still trying to get over Ryder's casting. Winona Friggin' Ryder. As Spock's mom! Do you dig it?

We all know the technical limitations that come with working on Wii, and they're issues that hardcore Nintendo fans - especially those that don't want to invest in a second or third system this generation - are having to deal with time and time again. There isn't enough space in our fridge - meaning that Nintendo's console has less than half a gig of storage space internally, and that's used for WiiWare, Virtual Console, Channels, and save data - so the thought of downloadable content or expanded gameplay is about as far from most gamers' minds as you can get. Guitar Hero World Tour is a first step in a whole new direction for Wii though, and it's that blending of a still very fun music game and a pile of new technology worked into the Wii that puts this game in the must-buy category on Wii.
