Lost City - Episode 6 - Human Beasts - Released: 6 March 1935 - From archive.org - CC-Licence: Public Domain
So, Fabian Basabe. Just arrested for drunk driving, which made us hopeful that the poster child for male debutards would finally lie low for awhile. Alas, wishful thinking. Over the transom comes a press release about the edition of 20/20 that John Stossel & co. will be broadcasting tonight, with a segment featuring our very own Mr. Basabe. Let's see what we have in store:
He thinks he crashed two BMW's in one weekend, and is not even clear on how many boarding schools kicked him out. "I don't know, maybe seven? Six, seven, nine?," he said. That was dogS, plural, mind you. More Basabianisms after the jump.He was also kicked out of college, says Fabian. "I brought my dogs to class, I sometimes didn't go to class," he said.
Basabe is no longer crashing cars or trying to stay in school, and says that he's focusing his energies on philanthropy, and pursuing a career as a TV personality. But he also seems to be focusing a lot of his energies on partying. "Premium liquor and champagne flowing, and ... caviar bars, and you know, all the stuff that you see in movies, and it's great," Basabe said.We highly recommend setting the Tivo for what's bound to be a truly thought-provoking hour of quality television. He said over the years the partying had been financed by his father, who Basabe says is a rich business man who gives him a generous allowance (Basabe would not say specifically how much he's given). Basabe is also married to an heiress of the La Perla fortune.
He doesn't need the income, but Basabe did try the 9 to 5 routine.
About five years ago he took a job on Wall Street and said it was "great."
"I met people, I saw an office, you know, the cubicles, and you know, lunch at your desk, and I saw a lot of that," Basabe said.
But ultimately he said the working life, "just wasn't interesting enough for me."
"And it's a tough life. I mean, they work until one in the morning," he said.
Basabe quit the job and hasn't had steady employment since.

While Wii owners have missed out on an iteration of the Call of Duty series this year, DS owners have not been left out in the cold with the series now making its first landing on a portable. The series finally leaves behind the WWII setting of all the previous games and starts afresh. We have to ask developers why they have left it to N-Space to again pick up the FPS mantle for the system. This time around N-Space have done a fabulous job. Read our Full Review
I thought it was a bad idea to stay overnight in this part of town. It wasn't worth the risk of getting my bike jacked.

This is just a quick reminder that a week from today is TV Squad's first (of what we hope to be many) meet-up of readers and writers, sponsored by Sling Media. You can read full details on our original post as far as time and location.

Kitchen Budapest's Mllamp project is out to give everyday items the ability to simulate emotions. As you can see from the video, a pair of lamps have been rigged to mimic human emotions. What those human emotions are, we're not sure. We just know that these lamps totally remind us of Pixar's mascot, Luxo Jr. [Kitchen Budapest]
We've already reported on the scuffles that have broken out across the country over PS3s, but believe me when I say Sony went all out with security at NY's launch event. While the SF crowd was chilling to their indie rock, the hardcore NY Sony fanboys were marching through metal detectors before being allowed into the PS3 Party Hall. – Louis Ramirez

if you're near Union City, you may want to stop by their Best Buy today and pick yourself up a Microsoft Zune a few days early. A reader writes:
By coincidence i got my hands early on an Microsoft Zune, bought as a regular customer at BestBuy in Union City Landing shopping centre. They dont seem to care that the release day is next tuesday. I dont know [how many more they have], but they talked about it as if they had alot more where those came from. I also asked the salesmen why he was selling it to me now, even tho the official release date is tuesday. He said: "The Microsoft Zune is featured in the current ad. The company rules state that things that are advertised in the ad must also be sold if the opportunity is there"
Sounds good to us. The software isn't working yet (the Zune Marketplace isn't live until launch), but you can go ahead and load your own music on it first. – Jason Chen

Three. Three's an important number for a franchise. It's a crossroads. Does your game continue to mimic its predecessors? Or does it dare to venture beyond their scope? Call of Duty 3 follows the former path, with few surprises, still no co-op, and an apparently wonky multiplayer experience. But no series does WWII better -- and that counts for something.

There are so many articles and blogs about the writers strike that it's really hard to keep track of them all. But I'm really enjoying the first person accounts from writers and other industry people on what's going on at the picket lines in Los Angeles and New York City.
One of the funniest parts of the strike (and there are funny parts) is what the people on the picket lines are saying. If you're on a picket line, you have to also say something. You can't just walk around the whole day carrying a sign, completely silent. So the writers have come up with several chants they've been saying. After the jump, a few of my favorites. Many of them are about Desperate Housewives.

A reader alerted us to this delightful video of yarmulked Observer owner Jared Kushner delivering a speech at the dedication of a new Chabad building at Harvard. (For the non-Jews in the room, Chabad tries to bring non-observant Jews back into the fold, mostly with free food.) In addition to Jared's charming haute-New Jersey accent, he also delivers this gem:
"There are very few women who will cook a fresh batch of chicken soup and deliver it in the winter to a dorm room because she heard from my roommate I was sick with the flu."
Ladies, take note.

We may only be hours away from a writer's strike, but that's not stopping the deals from rolling in. The Hollywood Reporter tells us Woody Harrelson will join Katie Holmes (who's still in talks), Giovanni Ribisi and Jason Lee in an odd comedic fantasy adventure from writer-director David Michaels called The Other Side. The film will follow "a female grad student who, while spending a summer on remote Destiny Island for her scholarship to study fish, discovers a strange world of unusual characters hiding a dark secret." Let me guess -- none of them are Tom Cruise fans. Is that their dark secret? If Holmes signs on, she'll play the girl studying fish, while Harrelson will play both the father and son who fund her scholarship (that won't look odd), Ribisi will play her romantic love interest (if he can keep his eyes open) and Lee will take on a number of roles. Heck, where's Eddie Murphy when you need him?
This would mark Holmes' second role since taking a few years off to have a kid and convince the world that her marriage is semi-normal. And I'd like to see her in stuff like this. One of my favorite roles from Holmes was in the film Go, where she played a random girl all hopped up on love and Santa. She was also very good as the ultra-hipster with not a dollar to her name in Pieces of April. In my opinion, she's at her best when she plays quirky -- that girl who's a little off, but you'd still date her a few times for the hell of it. Oh, and let's hand it to Jason Lee as well for finally escaping big-screen animation for a number of different live-action roles ... in the same movie. I like this cast, and I hope the movie is just as good.

Red Herring explores the implications of high-definition gaming (720p, 1080i, 1080p) for not only consumers, but for Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo. From the article: "Consumers around the world are forking over serious cash for high-def TVs. During the first half of 2006, NPD Group says U.S. shoppers spent more than $4 billion on LCD and plasma TVs. According to iSuppli, shipments of HD displays should overtake analog cathode ray tubes (CRTs) by 2008."
