Hands on: Dragon Quest Swords

This weekend IGN's Craig Harris had the opportunity to play a few minutes of the first Square Enix game for the Nintendo Wii: Dragon Quest Swords. There were more than two dozen kiosks dedicated to Dragon Quest Swords at the Square Enix Party in Japan, and after a short wait in a very long line it wasn't that extensive a wait to get a bit of hands-on with the Wii adventure.

Overall, the demo offered a good amount of fun...but it's, in its current form, a simple design that's far from a game that's going to reach classic status on the Wii system. It definitely has merit as a Wii-specific design that uses many of the unique elements of the Wii remote, and had a lot of keen nods to the Dragon Quest series with its monster-infested forest. It also didn't look all that bad on the widescreen LCD displays at the show, running at a smooth and consistent 30 frames per second rate.

The game is scheduled to ship in Japan on July 12th.

Microsoft expecting huge profits from Halo 3

It's been said before, and it's being said again: Microsoft is expecting the Halo 3 launch to be better than that of Halo 2. This is a pretty tall order considering the US$ 125 million worth of Halo 2 games they sold within 24 hours of its launch.

Hackers that exploited Xbox 360 meets Designer of the Xbox360 Security

The guys responsible for the February 2007 Xbox360 Hypervisor Priviledge Escalation Vulnerability go to Microsoft to discuss their achievement.

Bunnie, one of the hackers, says:

I was at Bluehat giving a presentation with Felix Domke on various hardware hacking exploits, including silicon hacks, dbox-2, Gamecube, and of course, the Xbox360 (Felix is a genius and a gentleman). Below is a photo of Dinart Morais (whose initials ironically are "DRM"), the designer of the Xbox360 security, and Michael Steil [alias mist], Felix Domke [alias tmbinc], and me [alias bunnie].

It was quite an honor to meet the man who designed such an excellent security system. We had a lot of questions for him, and he was very friendly. I guess since we have given our talk now, there is no more secret about it, some of the folks in the picture above were part of the team that published the February 2007 Xbox360 Hypervisor Priviledge Escalation Vulnerability. Fortunately, Microsoft was very receptive to working with us to fix the vulnerability before it was published and in the end it was a constructive exercise for all parties involved.

OMG! WTF! I'm at Microsoft talking about Xbox hacking??!?!?

Southern Brazilian state will have a Nintendo factory

The games division of Brazilian news website No Minimo reveals that the the State of Santa Catarina will have a Nintendo factory soon. According to a news clipping from the SC's government press room: ''[governor Luiz Henrique] also took a chance to announce the installation of a Nintendo factory, which will produce electronic games looking forward to an ambitious export program''.

If this is confirmed (after all, we're talking about an information provided by the state's governor), the probability of lower prices for the Brazilian consumers is high, given that both the Wii and DS would have local assembly; besides, in theory this maneuver would also make South American operations easier for the company.

Interview with Bungie's Frank O'Connor, Responds to Miyamoto's "I Could Make Halo"

When asked about his thoughts on the matter, Mr. O'Connor retorted:

"Yeah, well. I just want to go on the record and say that Bungie is hard at work on a side-scrolling platform game featuring some plumbers -- I'm not going to say what their ethnicity is, it's none of anyone's business -- but we took that as a gauntlet, a sort of glove slap, and we're going to respond in 2D scrolling style. That's all I'm saying."
