Second trailer for the documentary Favela on Blast, which screened at the 2009 SXSW Film Festival.

For 20 years, a subculture has emerged under society's radar. Favela On Blast tells the stories of sex, love, poverty and pride for Rio's marginalized people. They have their own language, style and heroes. Like the city itself, it's a music that's fast, heavy and violent. This film is a glimpse into the lives of charismatic people who relate to the funk music as a metaphor for the subculture itself.

Intangible Asset Number 82 tells the story of a respected jazz drummer and his search for an elusive South Korean shaman and grandmaster musician. The journey becomes a rite of passage as he meets engaging and exotic characters, and overcomes cultural obstacles and the march of time to eventually meet the master only days before his death.

The film takes us inside the thoughts of a dedicated musician as he explores the tools of self expression. It is a road movie, a philosophical encounter, a showcase of fascinating musicians rarely heard outside of Korea, and a tribute to the universal language of music.

Trailer for It Was Great, But I Was Ready to Come Home.

Film follows best friends Cam and Annie as they navigate their way through the mountains and coastal towns of Costa Rica, looking for old comforts amidst new experiences. By turns tender and critical in its approach to its characters, Kris Swanberg's debut feature is an intimate and introspective look at the ebb and flow of female friendship.

Trailer for the documentary Know Your Mushrooms.

Mushrooms – we put them on our pizza and steaks and in our soups and salads, we marvel at their variety and are sometimes repelled by their grotesque beauty when encountering them in the bush. And yeah, some have even sampled their more exotic possibilities and asked the question: “Do mushrooms come from a far away planet?”

Still, others have asked: “Can mushrooms save the planet?”

The world of fungi and their integral relationship with the health of the planet have only recently been appreciated. The oldest and largest living organisms recorded on Earth are both fungi. And their use by a new, maverick breed of scientists and thinkers has proven vital in the cleansing of sites despoiled by toxins and as a “clean” pesticide among many other environmentally-friendly applications.

Inspired by a chance conversation with fellow filmmaker and mushroom buff Jim Jarmusch, Mann set off to the annual Telluride Mushroom Festival in Colorado. It was there he encountered the unique sub-sub-subculture surrounding fungi that includes an unlikely assortment of nerds, nuts, hipsters, tripsters, artists, chefs, musicians, foodies, foragers, and seekers all paying homage to the mighty mushroom.

 Trailer for The Last Friday.

Since gambling away everything he used to own, Yousef has lived alone in humble conditions, working as a taxi driver. In order to scrape together the money for an upcoming operation at the hospital, he turns to his boss for help and re-establishes contact with his son and now wealthy ex-wife after a long period of estrangement. Much is therefore in motion on the eve of the surgical procedure.

A Knight of the Mournful Countenance in the city of Amman: Yousef deals with everyday adversities with silence and stoicism. He secretly steals his electricity from a neighbour. He reacts to getting a parking ticket with a shrug of his shoulders. He endures his employers degradations and double-dealings. When female customers talk of their annoyances regarding their fiances or other men, he simply doesnt listen. Hes also come to terms with being the only one around without a mobile phone. It is only the impending operation and his concern for his truanting son which leads him to take control of his life. This carefully photographed film casts a laconic and occasionally humorous gaze on the relationship between father and son, men and women, rich and poor and stagnation and change.
