Lauren talks about National Signing Day, and who should be happy.Filed under: Comedy, Drama, Deals, Cannes, Distribution, Newsstand
I know a lot of people come down on Jennifer Lopez for whatever reason (I heard she's not the friendliest person in the world), but as far as acting goes, I do think she has potential. Word has it that she's great in El Cantante, and I truly liked her performances in both Out of Sight and Bordertown (read my Berlin review of that film here). Of course, for every Selena, there's a Jersey Girl ... and a Monster-in-Law ... and a Gigli. What's next for the gal, you ask? Well, the Hollywood Reporter tells us that folks are moving forward with Love and Other Impossible Pursuits, with Lopez attached to star and Don Roos directing off his own script. I dig Roos. Did you see Happy Endings? The Opposite of Sex? He makes these ultra quirky relationship films that have just enough edge -- coupled with fantastic performances -- for us to not call out corny.
Capitol Films has boarded the film as a co-financier (just one of the many deals currently taking place over at the Cannes Film Festival), and they'll also be in charge of the pic's worldwide sales. With Marc Platt producing, story is said to revolve around the "tempestuous relationship" between a woman and her young stepson. Like with most of Roos' films, Love and Other Impossible Pursuits will mix a little comedy with a little drama, so that you'll be laughing at one point -- but then, when you least expect it, a tear slides down your cheek. Based on the title, I'm sure a lot of folks will crack the obvious Lopez joke; how the "Other Impossible Pursuits" include the actress trying to absolutely shine in a role. But I refuse to go there. Nope. Not me. I like her. I don't exactly know why I like her, but the talent is in there, somewhere. And here's hoping we see it come through soon.

Ready for one of the best global warming videos made so far?
Great image and sound quality. Minimalist but effective background. Great acting. All this is getting combined with a great storyboard and a great ending. Needless to say that we love this video!
Father's Day, anyone? Memorex has created this device for that technologically savvy money clip user. It is a flash drive that can also double as a money clip. It is available in capacities in up to 1GB and is available for $35 at Target stores. It may be a bit bulky for a money clip, but think of how impressed the strippers will be when your dad is "making it rain" from bills coming out of his Memorex flash drive money clip. –Travis Hudson

Though we've suffered through countless stories in which the geek attempts to woo the hot cheerleader, I'm always hoping someone will emerge to take this tired concept in a new direction. Variety tells us that Fox Atomic has snagged the film rights to Larry Doyle's debut novel I Love You, Beth Cooper, with plans to turn it into one of those films where you can't help but ask: Hasn't this been done, like, a thousand times? Seeing as Doyle is an accomplished writer (he's penned seven episodes of The Simpsons, as well as the not-so-good Ben Stiller flick Duplex), I'm optimistic that he's churned out something a tad different here. And since I'm a sucker for these kinds of stories, I intend to pick up the book this summer to find out for myself.
In addition to the acquisition, Fox Atomic has set up the project with Chris Columbus and Michael Barnathan to produce through their 1492 Pictures. While Columbus has not signed on to helm the pic, the subject seems like a good fit for the family-friendly director and, if the script is good enough, I'd expect him to take the reigns. Story centers on a geeky valedictorian who, during his graduation speech, decides he has nothing to loose and so he professes his love to the school's most popular (and most beautiful) cheerleader. Will our geek get the girl? Or will her tough-as-nails boyfriend (yup, there's one of those too) squash our hero before he even has time to achieve his goal? Apparently, I Love You, Beth Cooper hit bookstores earlier this month, so if anyone out there has read it, feel free to let us know what you think.
Permalink | Email this | Comments(InfoWorld) - Microsoft unveiled a stopgap file converter on Wednesday that allows Mac Office users to work with Office 2007 Word document files.
The beta application only converts .docx files -- documents saved in Word 2007's new native Open XML format -- into .rtf (Rich Text Format) documents, a format that can be opened by Word 2004 or Word v.X for Mac OS X. It supports only one-way conversion.
"We do not want to see you inadvertently mess up any critical documents you are working with," Geoff Price, of Microsoft's Mac Business Unit, said in a posting to the Mac Office blog. "When sending documents back to colleagues and contacts, we recommend saving to the default .doc format from Mac Word."
Microsoft's Mac developers went with a standalone converter rather than an add-on to Office to cut down testing time and allow the Office 2008 team to focus on the new suite. A final, integrated converter for Office 2004 will launch six to eight weeks after Office 2008 debuts as Microsoft promised in January when it announced the new Mac bundle. A polished standalone converter will be released after that.
Updates to the beta this summer will add conversions for Excel and PowerPoint documents, said Price. He didn't specify dates.
Office 2008 for Mac, which Microsoft has pinpointed as a second half 2007 release, will use the same default Open XML file formats as Windows' Office 2007 applications. The new suite -- the first written by Microsoft for Intel-based Macs and the last to support older machines running PowerPC processors -- will also rely on an Office 2007's Ribbon-like interface.
The 25MB converter installation file can be downloaded from Microsoft's Web site.

After months of waiting, Halo 3 fans are now being rewarded with ... more waiting. Those who got into the beta by purchasing Crackdown were supposed to be able to begin downloading at 8 a.m. today but, as of 9:40 am EST, still have not been able to start the download. Those accessing the beta through other methods are unaffected. Bungie's Frankie is already on the case, saying "We have alerted the appropriate Live authorities and they are taking care of the problem as we speak. More news as it comes in."

You have, by now, surely seen the world-famous video wherein a bunch of kids, using their pelvises, perplex an ottoman. Did you know that, thanks to the creativity of the Internet communities, there is a parody of that video, but about blogging? Hahahahah, it's true! It's this kind of thing that explains why we still haven't told our parents what we really do for a living. (Should you be one of the eight people who missed the original ottoman-fornicating clip, we've placed it after the jump.)

The Cannes film festival kicks off on Wednesday night with everybody waiting for Brangelina imminent arrival!
But, before then, Norah Jones and Jude Law are gonna kick things off with their opening night film, My Burberry Nights.
NoJo and Law hit the Cosette on Wednesday for their photo call, a Cannes tradition.
Kinda bummed we're missing the festival this year, but we'll keep everyone updated on all the goings on and whatnot!

Knowing 28 Days Later, you pretty much know what do expect: pockets of character development quickly interrupted by flesh-chomping blood-spraying zombies, but with a bigger budget than before. The fast-paced/shaky camera/choppy editing/strobe lighting is all pretty effective, but it seems a pity that the attempts at some kind of characterisation (above all with Robert Carlyle) are so quickly abandoned, and in the end it doesn’t really go anywhere. Except, no doubt, on to 28 Months Later.

You're probably already familiar with the lengths you'll have to go through to download an Xbox Live demo that hasn't been cleared for the U.S., a phenomenon we've covered fairly extensively this week. But this time it's a Japanese demo for Tenchu Z, and it's one case in which we can whole-heartedly endorse the use of clandestine tactics. You see, this is a ninja game.

An Atari 2600 Joystick is converted into a TV remote.
I wanted a simple remote that could be used to easily control the volume and mute the TV when the phone rings. I have replaced all of my remotes with a single Harmony 880 control which works great, but I wanted something a bit more cool to compliment it. Building the retro remote was fun and simple since the mini remote that I used was very easy to hack.
