Gameplayer has gone live with the first online review of the latest release in the Need for Speed series. They award the game a 6.5, suggesting that it merely brings the series back to a level with Most Wanted from three years ago.
'Everything seems to work as it should – the racing is fast and frenetic; the sense of speed is swell and the cars look mostly rad. It ticks most of the boxes it ought to in order to get by. The biggest problem with Undercover, and it's a fundamental one, is that it's lazy."

Talking to Gamasutra as part of an in-depth new interview, D3 Publisher of America COO Yoji Takenaka has been discussing the state of the Japanese game biz, suggesting the "learning curve" of PS3 and Xbox 360 development "is hurting the industry" in Japan.
Takenaka explains that the expense of development has something to do with it: "It takes money -- 10 or 20 million dollars for the first title on the PlayStation 3. I think Japanese publishers are treating 360 like a second or third format, or not thinking about it, except for bigger publishers. That learning curve is hurting the industry, I think. At the same time, Nintendo's business model is great. Selling hardware at a low price point... it's very affordable, whereas 360 is more expensive, and the PlayStation 3 is initially a big loss. That's why I think Nintendo's gaining more share. It's like 70 or 80 percent of the business is Nintendo, now, in Japan." In the full feature, Takenaka talks beyond Puzzle Quest, the title that put the publisher on the map in the U.S. to the early 2008 release of its Digital Extremes-developed Dark Sector, providing a candid and in-depth look at the little-known but significant publisher's business strategy for next-gen development.

VG Chartz gets no data from retailers. Wrong. How does anybody think they would ever be approaching the level of accuracy and putting out the quantity of data they do each week if they didn't get data from retailers. The "leap of faith" many struggle with is why would retailers provide them with data? Which retailers? How much data? Why can't they say? What are they hiding?

Co-op zombie shooter almost here now. Just in case you'd forgotten we thought it only right to remind you that the demo for Valve's latest, co-op zombie shooter Left 4 Dead, will be landing tomorrow. Click here to read the full article Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Business ![]() File this one in the delicious irony department: the same day Kotaku's Brian Crecente posts a video of his son playing a brand new demo unit of the PS3, SCEA boss Kaz Hirai tells the Associated Press that his 12-year-old son doesn't yet have a system. Despite the younger Hirai's begging, Kaz said that his son "hasn't touched one and he hasn't seen one ... that's only fair for everybody." Can this possibly true? Do members of the press now rank higher in the battle for new Sony hardware than the president of the company? Or was Hirai's quote a Steve-Ballmer-style "I feel your pain" PR feint designed to mollify gamers hurt by expected shortages? We report ... you decide.
