Elite, the Metroid series, Dungeon Siege, God of War I and II, Half-Life (but not Half-Life 2), the Grand Theft Auto series; some of the best games ever have done away with the level mechanic and created uninterrupted game spaces devoid of loading screens and artificial breaks between periods of play.
Much like cut scenes, level loads are anathema to enjoyment of game play, and a throwback to the era of the Vic-20 and Commodore 64 when games were stored on cassette tapes, and memory was measured in kilobytes. So in this era of multi-megabyte and gigabyte memory and fast access storage devices why do we continue to have games that are dominated by the level structure, be they commercial (Halo 3, Portal, Team Fortress 2), independent (Darwinia) and amateur (Nethack, Angband)?

Derrick Schommer examines, analyzes and explains the numbers that were issued by GameDaily on hardware and software releases since 2007.
Excerpt: "Although a few of us expected Sony's PlayStation 3 to make huge progress this year, each month they have marginal growth is causing their competitors to excel beyond anyones imagination. We're starting to wonder how well Sony's "10 year plan" is going to work out with their competitors taking advantage of the market now when, in 10-years, they will be sitting on their pile of cash to re-invest in the 8th generation of consoles." Yeah, Gina Gershon, right. Well, did you also know that Gina and her brother Dann just wrote a kid-friendly horror book called Camp Creepy Time? Yep, they did. And guess what? DreamWorks bought it to make a movie version! And here's the best part: They hired a really solid screenwriter to bang out the adaptation.According to reliable sources, Camp Creepy Time (which won't hit bookstores until May) is about a young boy who discovers that what oughtta be an idyllic summer camp -- is actually a haven for aliens who love nothing more than turning human children into hideous monsters and shipping them across the cosmos as exhibits for interstellar zoos. Nifty! (That sound you're currently hearing is the clackity-clack of the Gershon siblings working on the sequel.) Turning the as-yet-unpublished book into screenplay form will be Richard LaGravenese, whom astute movie fans will fondly remember as the guy who wrote The Fisher King, The Ref and A Little Princess. His previous page-to-screen adaptations also include The Bridges of Madison County, Unstrung Heroes and The Horse Whisperer. (Plus his very first screenplay was Rude Awakening, and I think that movie is pretty funny.) Anyway, yeah: summer camp, aliens and monsters. I smell a smash hit as I sit here kicking myself for not hatching this concept five years ago. The PC remains a big player in the games market but in recent years its cutting edge has been blunted.
The vast majority of games are still played on PCs rather than consoles; typically casual games played on cheap desktop machines or online games, such as World of Warcraft. So how much more powerful are these high-end PCs than the latest generation of consoles? "It's absolute nonsense to think that consoles are at the cutting edge," said Roy Taylor, vice president of content relations at Nvidia, the world's biggest manufacturer of graphics cards. "As good as consoles are, they are so far behind the PC gaming experience that there is no comparison. In terms of raw processing power, the high-end PCs are at least three times more powerful." Mr Taylor points out that the latest graphics cards can draw twice as many pixels, twice the screen resolution, as a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360

Catch that? Robbins registered twice, most recently at an address (his office, it turns out) assigned a different polling location from his old one. Election officials said they would have caught Robbins in this inadvertent mischief sooner, but he used a new voter registration form instead of an address change, and he hasn't tried voting in at least the last two elections. Robbins said he doesn't remember registering twice — right, see, that would be the problem — and a poll worker told the Times she remembers Robbins voting at the supposedly invalid location in September. We're betting the movie star will simmer down once he receives the copy of his signed 2004 registration form, enclosed in a letter from elections officials. As a Board of Elections official told the Times: "We were confused, but he shouldn't have been confused... it’s all very logical: He filled out a new voter-registration form with an entirely new address, and went to the old address." Robbins "resents" this statement, and is printing things out and accusing people of going after his family just generally acting like a lunatic. Which means he'll probably take his march to City Hall, just as soon as he can locate it. And also his wallet, and a pen, where the hell did he leave that damned pen... (Photo from TMZ)
I know from experience that Joe Medeiros rarely gives interviews. But an enterprising 15-year-old home schooler who lives just down the street in Burbank from where the WGA is picketing NBC taped this excellent Q-and-A with The Tonight Show head writer.
