into their career. 2000's Mass Romantic was so of its moment—a Canadian
supergroup (a supposely one-off project of A.C. Newman, Neko Case and
Destroyer's Dan Bejar) that took a mad scientist's approach to the indie-pop
hook, sewing vocal and instrumental hooks into a single
verse. But the group has been going strong for seven years now, and The New Pornographers continue to refine their approach on
Challengers, their fourth and most cohesive album of accomplished,
dynamic pop-craft yet.
Challengers builds upon the melancholy that lurked behind 2005's Twin
Cinema. Standout track "All the Old Showstoppers," with its careful acoustic
chords and breathtaking melodic centerpiece, reads like a nostalgic
